Dark Moon: Rise of The Dark King

Chapter 565: Third Arc (Fallen Heart) - 330. To feel

Third Arc (Fallen Heart) - 330. To feel

Angel's frown deepened, her words unsettling him even more. "Because of what? Strength? Willpower?" he scoffed softly, shaking his head in disbelief. "That sounds absurd, Rose. I didn't have any of that when the shadow made me the host of the crystal. I was just a kid—a spoiled, reckless child."

His memories of that time washed over him, bringing back the image of who he had been. He wasn't the strong, calculating king he was now. No, back then, he was nothing but a mischievous child, always getting into trouble. He was always playing hide and seek with the nannies. They constantly had headaches trying to keep track of him. He used to try and lift his father's sword and imagine himself as king. But the sword was too heavy, and he could barely lift it. He was nothing special back then. He was just a child with a title. That was all…

His frustration mounted as he thought about how absurd it all seemed. Why would the crystal choose him, a child who was more of a nuisance than a hero? Why would the shadow spare him, only to make him a vessel for this dark power?

Rose, still close to him, shook her head gently, her voice soft and understanding. "That's all just my guess, Angel," she reminded him. "I don't have the answers either. I'm just trying to help you see it from a different perspective. But I'm just as blind in this case as you are."

She spoke with such tenderness that Angel couldn't help but feel a little guilty for his harshness. He knew she was only trying to offer him some clarity, some way to make sense of the madness. And though her theory seemed far-fetched, it was at least something to consider, something that might offer a sliver of explanation in the sea of confusion.

He sighed, leaning back against the headboard of the bed, his gaze drifting toward the ceiling as his mind raced. "I just don't understand why it had to be me," he admitted, his voice quieter now, tinged with a vulnerability he rarely showed.

Rose didn't respond with words. Instead, she silently wrapped her arms around him, pulling him into a hug. She pressed her cheek against his chest as if she hoped that her closeness could help banish the storm of emotions in his mind. Angel closed his eyes, his chest rising and falling as he worked to steady his breathing. Her presence and her touch were enough to ground him—enough to remind him that he wasn't entirely alone in this.

He held onto her hand, intertwining their fingers as if to reassure himself of her presence. He knew Rose understood this moment, even if she couldn't fully comprehend how bad his turmoil was.

And this, Angel realized, was what he rarely allowed himself to feel.

Vulnerability. Trust. Emotions that he had buried deep within himself, guarding them behind layers of control and duty.

But here, with Rose, those walls were starting to crumble. He hadn't wanted to burden her with his inner battles, but now, in her embrace, he found it easier to let go, even just a little.

For a moment, the problems seemed to fade. It was so unlike him to feel this way. The king who always kept his composure, who never let anyone see the cracks beneath his stoic exterior, now found solace in the arms of the woman beside him. He didn't know if this was a good thing or not, but he felt… alive.

Angel opened his eyes slowly, feeling calmer than he had in the past few moments. The storm inside him had not disappeared, but it had quieted. He looked down at Rose, still holding her close, and gave her a small, grateful smile. "Let's have breakfast," he said, his voice steady now. "I have work to do after this."

He knew how curious he was and how angry he was with the fate that came to him, he wouldn't be able to find the answer now. He couldn't find the reason inside of him. He needed more evidence and clues out there. Not something based on a dream that could have been created out of his emotions.

Rose pulled back just enough to meet his gaze. She nodded, knowing he needed this, needed the distraction. He was a king… He couldn't keep speculating forever.
