Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition

Chapter 298: Story 298: Travel of the Past

The dust of the destroyed bridge still hung in the air as Damien and Clara stood on the outskirts of the ravaged city. The sound of the explosion had drawn attention—both living and undead. Shadows moved in the distance, figures that seemed too intelligent for shambling zombies.

"We're not alone," Clara whispered, her sniper rifle sweeping the area.

Damien nodded, his hand resting on the hilt of his machete. "We'll keep moving. If they follow, we deal with them."

The two moved in silence, weaving through the twisted ruins of what was once a thriving industrial area. The buildings were skeletal remains, their walls marked with scorch patterns and bloodied handprints. This wasn't just a battlefield; it was a graveyard.

Their destination was an old research facility rumored to hold information on the Zombie King's origins. If they could uncover his weakness, it might give them a fighting chance. But the journey there was fraught with danger.

As they climbed through a collapsed subway entrance to evade the horde closing in, Damien noticed Clara's unease.

"Something's on your mind," he said, his voice low.

Clara hesitated, her gaze fixed on the dim tunnel ahead. "This place… I was here before. During the outbreak."

Damien stopped, turning to her. "What happened?"

Clara's grip on her rifle tightened. "I was part of the evacuation team. We tried to save people, but… things went wrong. The infected overwhelmed us. I barely made it out."

The vulnerability in her voice was new, but Damien understood. The apocalypse had left scars on everyone.

Before he could respond, a chilling growl echoed through the tunnel. The sound wasn't from any ordinary zombie—it was deeper, guttural, and filled with rage.

"Move!" Damien shouted, pulling Clara as a massive creature barreled into the tunnel.

The beast was grotesque, its bloated flesh rippling with unnatural growths. Eyes glowed faintly in its misshapen head, and jagged claws scraped against the walls.

Clara fired, her bullets tearing into its chest, but it didn't stop. Damien lunged forward, slashing at its legs to slow it down. The creature roared, swiping at him with claws that narrowly missed his torso.

"Up there!" Clara pointed to a ledge.

They scrambled onto the platform as the beast lunged, slamming into the wall below. Damien pulled a grenade from his belt, yanking the pin and tossing it into the creature's gaping maw.

The explosion was deafening, and the beast collapsed in a heap.

Clara sat against the wall, catching her breath. "What was that thing?"

Damien wiped blood from his blade. "Something the King's experimenting with. He's getting desperate."

The encounter left them shaken but more determined. As they pressed on, Clara placed a hand on Damien's arm. "Thanks for having my back."

"Always," Damien replied, his voice steady.
