Chapter 18: The High-Tech Stick
Wang Yanfei had just settled into the living room, preparing to enjoy a glass of water, when he heard the light sound of footsteps descending the stairs. He looked up, a half-eaten snack still in his hand from the kitchen, and in the next second, nearly dropped it.
"Brother, let's have a match!" Wang Xiaoxiao stood at the top of the stairs, waving a strange-looking staff with a gleam of excitement in her eyes. The staff had an odd design—it looked like a plastic rod wrapped with duct tape, with exposed wires glinting with metallic sheen. It seemed like something she had swiped from a lab, an unfinished prototype at best.
Wang Yanfei gave her a once-over and chuckled. "Xiaoxiao, you think you can take me on with that tiny frame of yours? Your brother has an awakened hardened-body ability. What's that little stick of yours going to do?"
Xiaoxiao huffed, raising an eyebrow. "Little stick? Don't underestimate it! This is my modified electromagnetic resonance staff, designed specifically to counter hardened abilities. If you're scared, just admit defeat now—no shame in that."
Wang Yanfei stretched his neck slightly before standing up, assuming a relaxed stance. "Alright then, I'll let you have three free hits. Come at me."
Xiaoxiao didn't waste any more words. Gripping the staff firmly, she swung it down toward his chest. The end of the staff emitted a faint, low hum as it descended, striking Wang Yanfei's crossed arms in front of him.
"Boom!"
A powerful shockwave surged through his body. Wang Yanfei felt a heavy impact spread from his arms, knocking the wind out of him. He staggered backward, finally losing balance and landing flat on his back. A strange numbness spread through his limbs.
"This stick… has some bite." He shook his arms out, realizing that although his skin was undamaged, the jolt had left his joints aching. "Looks like I'll have to take this seriously."
Taking a deep breath, he activated Jade Force, letting it flow through his body. His skin took on a faint jade-like sheen, his limbs growing denser and more resilient. Raising his gaze back to Xiaoxiao, he smirked. "Alright, come again. Let's see if you can knock me down this time."
Xiaoxiao grinned, showing no hesitation as she swung her staff once more. This time, the force was even greater, and the resonance frequency caused the air to hum subtly.
"Boom!"
A sharp pain shot through Wang Yanfei's arm. His face paled instantly. He gritted his teeth, but a cold sweat had already formed on his forehead. Glancing down, he noticed something alarming—his arm was slightly deformed. A fracture.
Xiaoxiao's excitement vanished in an instant. She dropped the staff and rushed to his side, supporting him. "Brother! Are you okay? I—I didn't mean to! I didn't think it would be this strong!" Her voice carried genuine panic and guilt.
Wang Yanfei clenched his jaw, shaking his head to reassure her. "I'm fine, don't panic…"
He looked down at his arm. Though his skin remained intact, the dull pain and weakness in his joint told him that the bone had taken significant damage.
Then, unexpectedly, a strange sensation began spreading inside his arm. It was an odd, tingling itch, as if something deep within was slowly mending itself. Closing his eyes, he focused on the feeling. His heartbeat gradually sped up, and his Jade Force seemed to react on its own, flowing gently into the fractured bone.
He murmured, "My bone... it's healing."
Xiaoxiao froze, staring at his arm in disbelief. "Are you serious? You have regeneration now?"
Wang Yanfei flexed his fingers slightly and noticed the pain fading rapidly. He raised his arm, and though nothing seemed different externally, he could feel the Jade Force seeping deep into his bones, reinforcing and repairing them.
His eyes lit up. "It really is... Jade Force is integrating into my bones. That staff of yours actually helped me figure something out."
Testing his movements, he could sense the subtle but growing transformation. His gaze sharpened with determination. He muttered, "I think I just figured out how to cultivate 'Jade Bone'..."
Turning back to Xiaoxiao, he grinned with newfound enthusiasm. To her, though, there was something off about his expression.
"Quick, hit me again with the staff!" His voice was eager, bordering on obsessive.
Xiaoxiao blinked. She stared at him for a moment before hugging her staff tightly, stepping back with a look that transitioned from concern to wary disbelief.
"Brother… you're not right in the head, are you? Did you just get addicted to being beaten up?"
She clutched the staff even tighter, shaking her head firmly. "No way, absolutely not! What kind of sister keeps hitting her brother with a stick on purpose? That's just messed up!"
Wang Yanfei rubbed his nose, trying to explain. "It's not what you think! Xiaoxiao, listen—I can feel my bones healing! This is a huge breakthrough. The pain actually speeds up the integration of Jade Force into my skeleton—"
"Stop! Stop!" Xiaoxiao cut him off, waving her hands. "We can talk about it later! First, we need to get you checked. What if there's actually something wrong? If Mom and Dad come back and see this, I'm the one who's getting scolded!"
Seeing her serious expression, Wang Yanfei relented with a sigh. "Fine, let's get a scan. But don't tell Mom and Dad—I can handle this myself."
Xiaoxiao rolled her eyes and called out to the household assistant robot. "Hey, get him to the scanner and check his bones!"
The robot immediately responded, its mechanical arms gently supporting Wang Yanfei's injured arm as a calm electronic voice announced, "Please follow me. The diagnostic process will begin shortly." It then guided him to the medical scanning station in the corner of the living room.
A few minutes later, the results appeared on a holographic screen.
Xiaoxiao leaned in for a closer look—and her eyes widened in shock. "Brother, your fracture… why does it look jade-colored?"
The robot added in its monotone voice, "Diagnostic analysis: The affected bone structure has undergone an unidentified transformation. Surface hardness has significantly increased. Compared to surrounding skeletal tissue, density is higher and exhibits crystalline properties."
Xiaoxiao turned to stare at him, her expression a mixture of awe and disbelief. "So, your ability doesn't just heal—it's actually turning your bones into Jade Bone?"
Wang Yanfei gazed at the scan, his excitement barely contained. He took a deep breath, his voice filled with certainty. "Exactly! This proves that Jade Bone can actually be cultivated. That staff's resonance effect is useful—it helps drive Jade Force deeper into the bone."
Xiaoxiao instinctively took two steps back, gripping her staff even tighter. She eyed him with clear suspicion. "Brother… stop looking at my staff like that. If you keep going, you're really going to turn yourself into a walking rock."
Her reaction made Wang Yanfei laugh. He raised his hands in surrender. "Relax, I know what I'm doing. And next time, I'll figure out a way to train without using you as my test subject."
Xiaoxiao let out a deep breath, finally lowering her guard—but still shot him a warning glare. "You better! If Mom and Dad ask, I'm telling them everything was your idea."
With that, she quickly retreated upstairs, still clutching her staff like it was a precious treasure. Just before vanishing into her room, she muttered under her breath, "This guy... is turning into a total lunatic."
Wang Yanfei chuckled at her reaction, shaking his head. Yet, as he turned back to the scan results, his heart raced with anticipation.
"Jade Bone… I finally have a clear path forward for my training."
