Chapter 55: Chapter 55: Killing Intent in the Night

Kiyosuke was completely stunned when he received the assassination mission—especially since he was assigned to work with Shinnosuke.

He couldn't believe that someone like him, with his current ability, would be placed in an assassination unit… let alone partnered with Shinnosuke. But he accepted the mission regardless. After all, the one who issued the order was Orochimaru—his own teacher. Sending both him and Shinnosuke out was clearly meant to silence some critics.

"The Third Hokage sent his own student out, and you still have complaints?"

He had no choice.

"Captain Shinnosuke, where are we headed now?"

On the road, Kiyosuke asked the question.

Shinnosuke replied, "We're going to bypass the frontlines and cut off Sunagakure's supply route. Kiyosuke, we'll be deep behind enemy lines—there's a high chance we won't make it back."

Assassination missions were extremely risky. The moment they were dispatched, they were practically already considered expendable. If they succeeded, they'd be rewarded and promoted. If they failed—they'd die.

"Cut off Sunagakure's supply line? That won't be easy. Their logistics units are well-hidden," Kiyosuke pointed out.

With sealing scrolls, even just one or two ninja could carry enough supplies while moving in small units. Tracking down Sunagakure's logistics teams was nearly impossible.

"You're right. But they still have to send the supplies to the main camp. All we need to do is lie in wait along the route they have to pass."

Their goal was to circle around behind Sunagakure's main camp, figure out the transport route, and then strike with lethal force.

"I got it."

With that figured out, Kiyosuke and Shinnosuke picked up the pace. They needed to bypass the enemy's blockade first.

"Kiyosuke, stay alert. We're already in Sunagakure's active warzone. This area is likely filled with traps—don't let your guard down."

Just as Shinnosuke warned him, he took a step and triggered a nearly invisible wire. A trap was sprung.

Kunai and shuriken fired from hidden angles—each tied with explosive tags.

BOOM!

Shinnosuke quickly retreated, his expression dark. The trap itself wasn't the problem—it was the noise. It would alert the enemy. Not a good start at all.

He tossed Kiyosuke an ANBU mask.

"An assassin should look the part. Cover your face."

"Oh." Kiyosuke put on the mask. His voice instantly deepened—the mask was embedded with a voice-modulation seal. It attached to his face securely without any straps and didn't obstruct his vision at all.

Pretty useful, actually.

Shinnosuke also donned his ANBU mask. His voice now rough and gruff, he said,

"Sunagakure ninja are approaching—only three of them. Kill them all. Leave no one alive."

"Understood."

"Scatter."

The two split up and hid. Soon, three Sunagakure shinobi came running over to investigate. From the shadows, Shinnosuke launched his attack.

"Earth Style: Earth Spear Barrage!"

The ground beneath the enemy's feet erupted with sharp earthen spikes. One of them didn't even have time to react and was instantly impaled. The other two were quick enough to leap into the trees.

"Enemies! It's Konoha shinobi—they're hiding!" one of them shouted. "We have to warn the camp!"

"Right—"

But before he could act, he cried out in pain as something bit into his ankle—a snake had struck. Then several large serpents surged from the trees, coiling around him, cutting off any chance of sending a warning. With a scream, the snakes crushed him to death.

"Tsuuuuuroooooouuuuuuu!"

Seeing his younger brother die, the last Sunagakure shinobi went into a rage. Shinnosuke appeared behind him and said coldly,

"Don't worry. You'll join him soon. But first… you might still be of some use."

Dark sealing runes crawled across the shinobi's body. Shinnosuke restrained him and used genjutsu to interrogate him.

After extracting detailed information about the enemy's numbers, Kiyosuke summoned a giant snake that wrapped around the prisoner and devoured him.

"The camp ahead has fifty-six Sunagakure shinobi. Now that we've taken out three, that leaves fifty-three. Their supply team comes once a week—the last one arrived the day before yesterday. The next won't come for several days. No point in waiting—we'd just waste time."

"Kiyosuke, our task now is to eliminate those fifty-three. Got a plan?"

"Just kill them all, right? A perfect assassination leaves no witnesses. So all we have to do is make sure none of them live."

A perfect assassin always eliminates every last witness.

Assassin? He was more like a berserker!

A plan?

What was that?

"Ah… right…"

Shinnosuke wiped the sweat from his forehead.

"We can't be that reckless. We don't have any backup. We have to avoid getting hurt as much as possible."

If either of them got seriously injured, their ability to act would be compromised—and so would the mission.

"Got it. I'll release snakes while they sleep and have them do the killing," Kiyosuke offered.

"That could work."

Using snakes would help avoid direct confrontation. Less risk to themselves.

After agreeing on the plan, the two of them moved toward the enemy camp.

They didn't get too close—proximity risked detection. Instead, they carefully concealed their chakra and presence. Then, they rested to conserve energy.

The night ahead would be brutal.

...

Late into the night, both of them opened their eyes at the same time.

They were awake.

It was time to hunt.

They slipped past the perimeter undetected. Shinnosuke quietly eliminated three patrolling shinobi.

From the bushes, Kiyosuke formed a hand seal.

"Summoning Jutsu!"

A swarm of multicolored, triangular-headed venomous snakes appeared.

"Go. Bite them to death."

The snakes slithered toward the camp.

Their movement made almost no noise. Even experienced shinobi with excellent hearing could miss it entirely.

The snakes hugged the ground, slipped into the tents, and bit into the resting shinobi. Fangs pierced skin, injecting lethal venom.

The pain woke the victims. As they realized they were being bitten, panic set in.

They instantly drew kunai to kill the snakes and shook awake their companions—only to find they had also been bitten.

The once dark camp burst into chaos. Lights flared. Two medical-nin immediately began analyzing the poison to save lives.

"Damn Konoha shinobi! Resorting to such dirty tricks!"

"Disgusting! Absolutely disgusting!"

"I don't want to die! I want to live! Doctor—please save me!"

"Save me! My grandfather is an elder in the village! You have to save me!"

The camp descended into utter confusion.

That's when Shinnosuke and Kiyosuke made their move.
