Chapter 42: The Hunt For Salt (1)
The task of training Glacia to pull the sled, which Aoni was fearing, actually turned out to be quite a breeze because after getting everything hooked up and the reigns stabilized into the body of the sled, the ball of fluff seemed to be using her noggin for once, and pieced together what was expected of her.
However, there was a small oversight on the lad's part, and that was the fact that he never told her to wait for him, so the moment Aoni finished rigging up the bone and vines, Glacia grabbed it in her mouth and took off, dragging the wooden sled along and leaving a shower of sparks in her wake as Vestr and Austr clashed against the rocky cave floor.
"I feel like I should have seen that one coming…" Palming his face, Aoni, knife in hand and still wearing his makeshift jacket, quickly ran over and filled his empty pack with some provisions, IE, two Lunch MREs, and took off after his hyperactive Summon.
---
Upon exiting the cave, the lad found himself at a loss for words as Glacia effortlessly glided around the small platformed area around the cave, happily like some kind of working dog that yaps too much, causing Aoni to release a sigh before clapping loudly and shouting her name; unfortunately, he had once again mistaken the intelligence of his summon.
The moment Glacia heard her name called, she stopped instantly and looked in his direction, only to be clobbered by the momentum of the sled. As such, she was whisked away down off the platform and over the edge of the mountainside.
"MEEPP!" Glacia blurted out before disappearing.
"Did she just meep…oh SHIT!" momentarily stunned by the new sound his summon had uttered, Aoni quickly snapped out of it and made chase, only to find out that she hadn't gone too far and ended up head first in the snow with the overturned sled not far away.
Racing to her side, the lad quickly righted the confused but otherwise okay baby yeti before flipping over the sled and giving it a good examination to ensure it was still in working order.
Thankfully, the little accident hadn't injured Glacia nor damaged the sled, so after a few headpats and some soothing words, she was right as rain and ready to get back to playing.
"Now, you can't stop like that when pulling it," pausing to point at the sled, Aoni picked up the ball of fluff and set her down in the sled, which, since it was resting atop four feet of snow, nearly put Glacia on eye level with him.
"You already got a feel for pulling it, but now you gotta see if you can carry me along with the sled, so let's get back up to the cave, where the snow isn't as deep, and we can do some testing," Aoni stated in a calm manner while dumbing things down in a way she could understand.
"GAOOooooO!"
---
Ten minutes and some loose testing complete, the lad sat on his knees, safely in the hollowed-out log, reins in hand, and Glacia was ready to go.
"Remember, if I do this…" gently tugging to the right and left on the reigns, Aoni continued speaking.
"That means go that way, and if I pull back like this, it means to slow down, got it?"
"OoO,"
"MOST IMPORTANTLY, if the bone hurts your mouth at all, make sure to let me know, okay?"
"Gao,"
"Alright, let's go check out that thing you found earlier. FORWARD!!!" Shouting out a cheerful command, since he couldn't fully contain his excitement, Aoni pointed ahead with one hand while holding the reigns in his other, triggering the small ball of fluff to start moving forward.
Starting slowly at first, as Aoni had taught her, Glacia dug her feet into the snow, one step at a time, and unsurprisingly, due to her innate strength as a beast, she felt little resistance from pulling the weight of Aoni and the sled.
'This is it; the real test will be seeing if the sled sinks into the snow with my added weight, but since it's being distributed evenly through the skis, I don't see it being much of an issue.' Aoni mused as Glacia slowly guided him down the mountain slope before picking up some speed as she moved.
And just like that, they were off.
Although they weren't moving quickly due to the many times the lad had stated to be careful, Glacia was running along at a slight jog, no more than 3 or 4 miles per hour.
Even so, it was plenty because feeling the brisk wind whipping through his hair was quite thrilling for Aoni; still, once the cold got too much, he pulled up his hood and allowed himself to enjoy the ride while taking in the sights of his territory for the first time.
Thanks to Glacia's Passive, which allowed her to glide over the snow and the skis of the sled, their travel was not only pleasant but also uninhibited, and within a couple of minutes, they had long passed the site of the Avalanche and the lad was finally in unexplored territory.
Mind you, there really wasn't much to see, just a lot of white and the occasional tree; more surprising was the fact that Glacia seemed to be bringing him around the mountain and not necessarily down it.
Sure, they had gone down the mountain roughly a quarter of a mile, but then they veered off to the right and continued on with the tree line of the forest being on his left side.
'There's no doubt about it: without using a means of transportation, I am completely unable to make it down the mountain right now.' Watching the landscape slide by slowly, Aoni thought while gently holding onto the reigns and trying to estimate how far they needed to go.
'Still…without me holding her back, Glacia could probably get this far in a minute or two at the slowest. For her, this is no different from walking across the cave from one side to the other.'
