Chapter 77: Chapter 11

The city was in chaos as demonic fiends appeared from rifts in the sky, their grotesque forms towering over the buildings, their jagged claws and terrifying eyes filled with malice. The air seemed to vibrate with unnatural energy, as if the very fabric of reality was being torn apart. Amongst this madness stood Valkyrie, also known as Cassandra, her eyes narrowed in determination as she faced down one of the larger demons. The atmosphere was heavy with the stench of sulfur and the crackle of dark magic.

"White Rabbit, how is the situation?" Cassandra's voice was steady, though there was a hint of urgency beneath her calm exterior. She couldn't afford to falter now—not with the city on the brink of devastation.

From atop a building far across the street, Riana, known as White Rabbit, responded through the receiver in her mask. Her voice crackled through the communication device, her tone measured but clearly focused on the task at hand. "Valkyrie, I can see that these things are appearing in many locations throughout the city. It's becoming more widespread. However, I have no leads on the source, so we might need to reach out to Phoenix for more information."

Cassandra's brow furrowed. But the fact that White Rabbit couldn't get in contact with her now was concerning. Cassandra knew that time was critical. "I can't get in touch with her either, but for now, let's take care of the immediate threat. The Titans should be getting involved soon to provide backup."

Her resolve steeled, Valkyrie surged forward with blinding speed. With a swift motion, she launched herself into the air, her armored wings unfurling as she soared toward the giant demon before her. Her weapon, a shimmering sword infused with atomic manipulation, was raised high. With a precise, controlled strike, she pierced the demon's massive form. The blade disintegrated the fiend's flesh at a molecular level, leaving nothing behind but dust and ash.

"Affirmative," White Rabbit's voice responded through the earpiece. Her words were cold, but there was a hint of approval in her voice. Riana's nimble frame was already in motion, darting between the shadows, her sharp ninjato blades gleaming in the darkened city streets. She was a blur of movement, taking down demon after demon with brutal efficiency, her swords cutting through the air with deadly precision.

She moved like a storm—fierce and unstoppable. With each enemy she encountered, she was an embodiment of wrath. The demonic creatures stood no chance against her agility and expertise, their bodies falling to the ground with sickening thuds as Riana's blades found their marks. But despite her flawless technique, her mind was never fully at ease. Something was off. The demons weren't just appearing randomly—they were being summoned, and by someone or something powerful.

As Valkyrie cut down another foe, her mind raced. The situation felt familiar, like a puzzle missing pieces. She knew there was something more to this invasion than met the eye. "White Rabbit, I need you to keep scouting. See if you can find any connection between the rifts opening and these creatures. I'll keep thinning their numbers."

"Understood," Riana replied, her voice cool as she sprinted across rooftops, her eyes scanning for any sign of the origin of this chaos. She was keenly aware of the dangers around her, but her focus was unwavering. This was a threat unlike any they had faced before, and she wouldn't let it spread further.

The Titans, she knew, would arrive soon, but the battle would be long. In the back of her mind, she felt an ominous presence—something even darker than these demons—looming in the distance. The thought of facing whatever controlled these fiends sent a chill through her. But she wouldn't let fear stop her. Not now. Not when the city was depending on them.

As Valkyrie landed back onto the ground, a massive roar echoed from another part of the city. She turned her head toward the sound, her eyes narrowing. "We have more coming," she said. "Let's make sure they know we're not backing down."

Riana, now back on the ground, spun one of her ninjato blades in her hand as she prepared for the next wave. She could feel the tension in the air—a dark storm brewing, one that neither she nor Valkyrie could ignore. But for now, they would fight. And they would win.

Raven soared through the air, her cloak billowing in the wind as she surveyed the destruction below. Demons from Azathoth had ravaged the city, and the cultists behind it were opening portals to unleash more of Trigon's servants into the world. The heavy weight of responsibility pressed down on her. She couldn't afford to hesitate any longer—not when the lives of innocents were at stake.

Her eyes narrowed as she pinpointed the source of the disturbance. There, she felt the connection—a disturbance in the fabric of reality, a portal to her home realm. She clenched her fists and shot through the sky, heading toward the nearest location. The building she reached was a nondescript hotel, one that hid the evil festering within its walls.

Inside, the room was filled with the familiar symbols of dark magic, the air thick with a palpable energy. At the center of the room lay a sacrificial altar, a bound innocent placed at its heart, surrounded by symbols meant to channel the power of the demons. The cultist was seated cross-legged, meditating in the center of it all. His eyes flicked open when Raven entered, the black voids of his gaze fixed on her. He smiled—a sickening, knowing smile.

"Welcome, daughter," he said in a voice dripping with mock affection. "I hope you have been doing well."

Raven's heart tightened, the coldness of his words cutting through her like ice. "Father," she muttered, the word bitter on her tongue, as she fought to keep her emotions in check.

He chuckled, his dark eyes gleaming with malice. "I am happy you've come, Raven. We can talk without interruptions now. Come, become my vessel. Let us open the gate so we may rule this universe. No more pain, no more crime to fight. We will have power beyond your wildest dreams."

Raven's hand ignited with energy, the force crackling in the air as she summoned an energy blast. But her father's words held her in place. No more pain... The temptation whispered in her mind. It would be so easy. She could join him, end all the suffering, end all the endless battles. But no—he wasn't truly her father. He was Trigon, the demon lord, a being who thrived on destruction.

"Go back whence you came from, demon," Raven said through gritted teeth, her voice cold with resolve.

But before she could release the energy in her hand, a voice interrupted her.

"I'd stop, if I were you," came a teasing, familiar voice. "This mortal would die the moment he loses consciousness or the spell stops."

Raven's eyes widened as she turned to see Trigon's form begin to shift. The demon lord's grin faltered, and before he could say anything else, a bright energy blade pierced his chest.

Trigon's body began to disintegrate, his form turning to ash, but not before he shot one last angry look toward the room. "Remember this moment with regret, mortal," he hissed as he vanished into nothingness.

Raven turned to find Wasp standing in the doorway, her suit crackling with residual energy from the strike. She walked toward Raven with an air of quiet authority, her gaze intense.

"Why are you hesitating so long?" Wasp asked, her tone sharp. "The people outside are dying, and this man was a cultist who sacrificed countless innocents for his vile deeds."

Raven clenched her fists, struggling with the pull of her own internal conflict. "I don't know what to do. I don't know if I can just... kill them."

Wasp crossed her arms, her eyes narrowing. "Raven, you're too kind. You need to stop hanging around Robin. Following his code will only lead to tragedy, just look at the Joker or any other enemy of the League—Batman's approach is flawed. Some people are better off dead for the betterment of the world."

Raven flinched, the weight of Wasp's words pressing down on her. "It's better to kill one person than thousands," Wasp continued, her voice colder now. "You can't save everyone. Sometimes, the world is better off without certain people in it."

Raven's heart clenched at the thought. "How can you know who deserves to die or not?" she asked, her voice shaky. "Can you see if a person has the potential to change? What if that one person is someone close to you—someone you love? Would you be okay with that?"

Wasp's gaze softened, but only slightly. "My armor has a magical technique that identifies evil and shows me the level of it. It also tells me if a person has a chance to change. As for my precious person—he would never go down the wrong path. And if he did, he'd accept his punishment."

Raven's mind raced as she absorbed Wasp's words, but she couldn't shake the feeling of doubt that gnawed at her. Could she really make these decisions? Was it right to take another life, even for the greater good? And what if she was wrong?

"I will let you think about it," Wasp said, her voice firm. "But don't take too long. Demons are appearing in increasing numbers, and every second counts."

With that, Wasp left the room, her wings flaring as she took flight, leaving Raven alone with her thoughts. The weight of the decision hung heavy on her heart, the guilt and fear creeping in.

I have to do this... Raven thought to herself. This is the only way. She took one last look at the cultist's lifeless body, the shattered remnants of Trigon's influence scattered across the room, and then she turned and headed toward the next location.

Her resolve hardened as she made her way out of the hotel. The demons were still out there, wreaking havoc. But now, Raven had a new mission—one that was no longer just about stopping the demons. It was about confronting the darkness within herself. The choice she made now would haunt her for the rest of her life.

And she knew, deep down, that there was no turning back.
