Chapter 36: Not as Good as Muyue
Protected by Muyue's Water Style, Asuma instantly felt like he had been a complete jerk before. Because of his dissatisfaction with the Third Hokage, he had taken it out on Muyue, always having a bad attitude.
Yet, Muyue, as a teacher, had been extremely responsible. Even when Asuma was uncooperative and resisted Muyue's training, Muyue skillfully made him complete the necessary training.
Although the process was somewhat irritating, it was for his own good, to help him complete his training.
"Shisui, you can go back now." Looking at the dejected Asuma, Muyue knew it was his turn.
Shisui nodded, said nothing more, and turned to continue his own training.
Muyue walked in front of Asuma, patted the dust off his clothes, and helped him tidy his somewhat disheveled attire.
Finally, Muyue squatted on the ground, maintaining a similar height to Asuma, and looked into Asuma's eyes.
The two looked at each other, and Asuma quickly lowered his head, then softly said, "Sensei, I'm sorry".
"Tell me, what are you sorry for?" Muyue asked with a smile.
"I shouldn't have taken out my resentment towards others on you, and I shouldn't have constantly opposed you and refused to cooperate". Asuma dared not look at Muyue.
"You're not sorry to me, you're sorry to yourself," Muyue said, his expression gradually becoming serious.
Muyue asked, "Does your not training affect me?"
Without waiting for Asuma's answer, Muyue continued, "No, it doesn't affect me. Even if you don't train and I just waste time with you, I'd still be getting paid two thousand ryo an hour".
"But you're different. If you train one hour less, that hour of yours disappears, and you gain nothing".
For rebellious youths like this, you have to make them feel that everything you do is for their benefit, that you are on their side, and that they are the ones making the mistake.
"I..." Asuma hesitated. The more Muyue spoke, the more remorseful he became, and the more he felt like he was a terrible person.
However much he had disliked Muyue's methods before, that's how much his favorability increased at this moment.
To put it mildly, Asuma felt that Muyue, a teacher who had only taught him for a few days, was far better than his Hokage father.
He had been outwardly compliant but inwardly defiant of Muyue's training requirements, yet Muyue hadn't scolded him; instead, he even praised his strong limbs.
If it had been Hiruzen Sarutobi, he probably would have been furious, glaring and scolding him.
Before starting his lecture, Muyue had also first helped him brush off the dust and tidy his clothes, and even thoughtfully maintained eye level with him.
Thinking of this, Asuma's eyes couldn't help but turn red.
Why could a tutor he had only known for a few days praise him so unreservedly, yet when he excitedly returned home after getting first place, he could never get praise from his parents?
Was his "first place" less valuable than others'?
The more Asuma thought, the more wronged he felt, and he couldn't help but recall being defeated by a student who had just entered the Ninja Academy today.
Numerous emotions accumulated, and finally, they erupted.
Even though Asuma tried to control himself, tears still streamed down, drop by drop. He turned his head, not wanting Muyue to see.
But how could this escape Muyue, who had been constantly observing Asuma?
Muyue did not act immediately but waited a while, until Asuma had vented some emotions through crying, then he stood up, patted Asuma's shoulder, and handed him a handkerchief.
"Hanyu-sensei... you're so kind," Asuma took the handkerchief, wiped his tears, and choked out.
"Unlike my parents, they wouldn't be like this..."
"That's because you only remember their shortcomings and forget their good deeds. Think about it carefully, when you were little, who tirelessly coaxed you to sleep? Who taught you to walk and run step by step? Who checked on you in the middle of the night to see if you were covered? Who..." Muyue said earnestly.
The Third Hokage might be watching, so he couldn't just focus on gaining favor for himself; he also had to facilitate the father-son relationship.
Asuma was speechless. When Muyue put it that way, he indeed had similar memories in his mind.
"You can think about it when you have free time. For now, let's get ready to train. You haven't forgotten what you said earlier, have you?" Seeing Asuma's conflicted expression, Muyue brought up the training.
"Of course I haven't forgotten! From now on, whatever Muyue-sensei tells me to train, I'll train," Asuma said, wiping his face clean with the handkerchief.
Now, Muyue's image in Asuma's mind had transformed from a cunning and detestable adult to a perfect teacher who genuinely cared for him.
"This week, we'll continue practicing chakra control, and next week we'll practice ninjutsu," Muyue briefly explained the training schedule.
He certainly wouldn't teach Asuma in the same way he taught Shisui and the others.
Firstly, Asuma's identity was sensitive. The Third Hokage would either personally supervise or perhaps send someone to observe, which might lead to Muyue exposing his true strength. Muyue temporarily didn't want to show strength exceeding that of a Chunin.
The second reason was very practical: Asuma was just a student, not a disciple, and wasn't worth investing too much effort.
As Muyue expected, Hiruzen Sarutobi, who was in the Hokage's office, was observing how Muyue taught Asuma using the Telescope Jutsu.
"In terms of teaching children, Hanyu is indeed excellent." Watching Asuma's progression from initial resistance to eventual respect, Hiruzen Sarutobi affirmed Muyue's ability as a teacher.
He wasn't too surprised that Muyue could summon Shisui.
Because Shisui was a student in Muyue's class, and even students from other classes liked Muyue so much, there was no reason why students in Muyue's own class wouldn't like him.
"However, to have such strength right after entering the academy, his talent even surpasses Kagami's," Hiruzen Sarutobi thought of his former teammate, Uchiha Kagami.
He was an Uchiha who possessed the Will of Fire and was acknowledged by the Second Hokage.
"It seems I need to pay more attention," Hiruzen Sarutobi thought, taking a puff from his pipe.
Shisui was Uchiha Kagami's grandson and exceptionally talented; Hiruzen Sarutobi had known about his existence before.
He hoped Shisui could become an Uchiha like Uchiha Kagami.
Seeing Asuma begin his training, Hiruzen Sarutobi dispelled the Telescope Jutsu and started handling official duties.
Until evening, Hiruzen Sarutobi again used the Telescope Jutsu to inspect Konoha, and then left the Hokage's office to go home for dinner.
At the dinner table, Hiruzen Sarutobi asked with a chuckle, "Asuma, are you satisfied with your tutor? I carefully selected this teacher for you".
Asuma's hand, which had been constantly shoveling rice, paused. His mind couldn't help but recall the day's events.
Before today, Asuma would have answered that Muyue was a terrible teacher who deceived students.
"Hanyu-sensei is very good, much more skilled than you are at teaching," Asuma praised Muyue while not forgetting to take a jab at the Third Hokage.
Although Muyue had guided him, his resentment towards the Third Hokage wouldn't dissipate in half a day.
"What do you know, you little brat? The Sannin were all taught by me," Hiruzen Sarutobi said, his beard bristling and eyes wide with anger at being questioned.
"It's clearly Aunt Tsunade and the others who had extraordinary talent themselves," Asuma retorted. Although the Sannin were famous, they had all forged their own paths.
"Sometimes, being able to admit one's shortcomings is also a sign of wisdom," Asuma said, mimicking Muyue's tone.
Hiruzen Sarutobi was speechless by his good son.
Admitting means you're not as good as Muyue, not admitting means you lack wisdom, huh?
Watching his old father's hesitant expression, Asuma was in a great mood and ate with even more gusto.
