Chapter 98: 98. Reversal Of The Battle Situation
The Ability Lightning Rod was truly remarkable. Pokémon possessing this ability could not only ignore Electric-type moves but also convert them into energy that boosted their Special Attack stat.
This ability was even more unbalanced than type matchups. While type advantages merely reduced damage, they didn't make attacks completely ineffective. Lightning Rod, however, completely negated Electric-type moves regardless of their power.
Of course, this ability must have limitations, otherwise it would be truly invincible. But to overcome this advantage, an Electric-type Pokémon would need to be at least 20 levels higher than its opponent. It was no wonder Electric-type specialists considered both Lightning Rod and Volt Absorb to be absolute nightmares.
In this battle, Mega Manectric clearly couldn't overcome this limitation, rendering its Electric-type moves completely useless.
Although it also knew non-Electric moves like Fire Fang, Bite, and Iron Tail, these were significantly weaker compared to its Electric attacks. Against powerhouses like Mega Charizard X, Mega Sceptile, and Greninja on this battlefield, such moves seemed almost futile.
"It seems you've figured out what's happening," Eddie said with a confident smile. "Even though your Mega Manectric's raw power surpasses my three Pokémon, you can't defeat me because of Lightning Rod."
He raised his hand decisively. "It's time to end this battle. Mega Charizard X, Mega Sceptile, take care of Mega Manectric."
Eddie deliberately held Greninja back from attacking. Partly because Greninja didn't appear necessary for this fight, but also to avoid potential counterattacks.
Mega Charizard X opened its massive jaws, releasing a powerful Dragon Pulse. The draconic energy formed into a concentrated beam that surged toward Mega Manectric with devastating force.
Meanwhile, Mega Sceptile, immune to Electric attacks, charged forward fearlessly. It raised its bladed arms and launched a brutal Dual Chop attack against Mega Manectric.
Both moves were Dragon-type. Before Mega Evolution, these attacks would have been moderately powerful, but now with the added Dragon typing, their power had increased dramatically.
"Dodge those attacks, then use Fire Fang!" Lt. Surge shouted.
Lt. Surge wasn't going to accept defeat so easily. He couldn't use Electric-type moves, but he still had other options. Even if his Pokémon's effectiveness decreased by 70%, how could he know the outcome without trying?
Mega Manectric's incredible speed allowed it to evade both attacks with relative ease. It then lunged at Mega Sceptile, its fangs igniting with flames as it used Fire Fang.
The attack connected, but it didn't cause significant damage to Mega Sceptile.
Dragon-type Pokémon were resistant to Fire, Electric, Water, and Grass attacks, with damage reduced by half. Although Mega Sceptile retained its Grass typing, which would normally be weak to Fire, the Dragon typing's resistance effectively canceled it out.
With Mega Sceptile now largely unfazed by Fire-type moves, Mega Manectric's Fire Fang barely left a mark despite making direct contact.
"Damn it, that's not effective at all," Lt. Surge cursed, quickly changing tactics. "Mega Manectric, fall back and focus on survival!"
He had no choice but to retreat.
At this point, Lt. Surge understood he couldn't win this match.
At least not against this Mega Sceptile. With only Mega Manectric at his disposal, he was at a severe disadvantage.
If his Electabuzz were here, he could have used Fighting-type moves to even the odds.
Unfortunately, Electabuzz had been detained below deck by Ash.
"What makes you think I'll let you retreat?" Eddie said coldly.
"Mega Sceptile, grab it and use Giga Drain! Mega Charizard X, Fire Fang!"
Mega Sceptile was already in close proximity to Mega Manectric after being bitten. Though the Electric-type opened its mouth and attempted to retreat, the distance between them was too small.
Mega Sceptile wrapped its powerful arms around Mega Manectric, holding it firmly in place.
After being caught, Mega Manectric instinctively discharged electricity, attempting to shock its way free from Mega Sceptile's grasp.
However, the electricity merely traveled through Mega Sceptile's tail, where the Lightning Rod ability converted it into energy that strengthened it.
"Manectric! Don't use Electric moves! Use Bite to break free!" Lt. Surge called out desperately.
Seeing this, Lt. Surge naturally wanted Mega Manectric to cease its electric discharge and use Dark-type moves instead, hoping to bite Mega Sceptile and escape from its hold.
However, Mega Sceptile had absorbed significant energy from the electrical discharge, making its Giga Drain extraordinarily powerful.
While Mega Manectric's Bite might inflict roughly 10 points of damage per second, Mega Sceptile was recovering approximately 15 points per second through Giga Drain.
As a result, Mega Sceptile remained unharmed while Mega Manectric grew progressively weaker.
Just then, Mega Charizard X's attack arrived.
It opened its jaws wide as blue high-temperature flames gathered in the air, before clamping down fiercely on Mega Manectric with a devastating Fire Fang.
This move was significantly enhanced by the Tough Claws Ability.
Mega Manectric, already weakened by Mega Sceptile's Giga Drain, was struck hard again and suffered a burn status condition.
Nevertheless, Mega Manectric's raw power still exceeded Mega Sceptile's. Even without its moves, it managed to break free through sheer physical strength.
It ignored Mega Charizard X nearby and leaped away, returning to Lt. Surge's side.
However, its condition was deteriorating rapidly. The combined damage from Fire Fang and Giga Drain had taken its toll. Though there weren't visible wounds, the Pokémon was clearly severely injured.
CRASH!
A thunderous noise interrupted the battle as Electabuzz suddenly appeared, having been knocked back through a hole in the deck.
Then Riolu jumped up with Ash on its back.
Riolu was covered in wounds, and Ash was completely out of breath.
Ding! Riolu and the other two Pokémon defeated Electabuzz together! Experience shared!
Ding! Riolu gained experience! Level +3, reaching Lv43!
Eddie examined the hole in the deck but couldn't see any sign of Ivysaur or Pikachu, which meant Ash had recalled them to their Poké Balls.
In this situation, withdrawing Pokémon indicated they had lost their ability to battle.
Only Arceus knew how Ash had managed to defeat a Level 48 Electabuzz with the help of Ivysaur, Pikachu, and Riolu. Although the price was losing two Pokémon from the battle, such an achievement was still remarkably impressive.
Riolu had gained three levels at once. It had obviously been the lowest-leveled of Ash's Pokémon, but by sheer determination, it had now become his highest-level fighter.
These details, however, weren't the most important thing right now. What mattered was that Eddie had gained another ally for the battle.
As for Lt. Surge? He only had his injured Mega Manectric left.
The tide of battle had completely turned!
Now it was Lt. Surge's turn to desperately search for a path to victory!
