Chapter 56: Chapter 56: The Corrupted Storm
The 50 pirates from Don Krieg's last detachment plunged into the swirling smoke, their shouts echoing with greedy anticipation. "Easy pickings!" one bellowed. "Thirty percent, boys, thirty percent!" another roared, their confidence soaring with promises of loot and the perceived weakness of their unseen foes. The thick, unnatural mist swallowed them whole, eager hands already reaching for imagined treasures.
Then, a deafening, guttural roar ripped through the obscurity, shaking the very ground beneath their feet. It was a sound of immense, unrestrained power, yet twisted with a primal malice. From the heart of the swirling fog, a colossal, dark silhouette began to emerge, growing larger with every passing second.
Alex, kneeling, his body screaming in protest but his mind sharp, watched in horror as the creature materialized. It was a Spinosaurus, even larger than Klarg's transformed state, its scales a mottled, diseased green, its eyes burning with a chaotic, malevolent light. A cold dread seeped into Alex's bones. He instinctively tried to establish a connection, to assert control, but found none. No... this isn't right! he thought, his blood running cold. A failed summon! A Corrupted Spinosaurus! It will attack anyone... anything... according to its twisted nature!
The Corrupted Spinosaurus, incited by the pungent smell of blood and the fresh influx of screaming, terrified pirates, did not hesitate. It charged, a monstrous, living weapon of mass destruction. Its massive jaws snapped, tearing pirates limb from limb. Its colossal tail swept through their ranks like a scythe, sending bodies flying into the trees. Claws raked, crushing bone and armor. The pirates, expecting an easy mop-up, were met by a nightmare. They screamed, not in defiance, but in absolute terror, their greedy cheers turning into terrified wails. In a matter of minutes, a brutal, one-sided massacre unfolded. The 50 pirates who had charged into the smoke, eager for plunder, were annihilated, torn to shreds, their courage replaced by a desperate, futile flight.
As the last pirate fell, the thick, white smoke and dust that had engulfed the battlefield slowly began to dissipate, carried away by the gentle sea breeze. The horrific scene became starkly visible. Piles of shredded pirate bodies, the massive, lifeless form of Klarg, and standing amidst the carnage, the monstrous, emerald-eyed Corrupted Spinosaurus, its hide gleaming wetly from fresh blood.
On the deck of the Dreadnaught Sabre, which had run aground nearby, Don Krieg froze. His eyes, initially narrowed in cunning calculation, now widened in stark, unadulterated terror. "The... the thirty men..." he stammered, his voice cracking. He saw the piles of fresh corpses, the monstrous Spinosaurus, and the clear absence of his second-in-command, Klarg. "It... it killed them all! That thing... it's a monster!" He didn't understand what he was seeing, only that it was a force beyond anything he had encountered. Fear, cold and absolute, gripped him.
"Sail! Get us out of here!" Don Krieg roared, his voice laced with desperation. "Cut the anchors! Set the sails! Now! We move!" He abandoned any thought of salvage or further conquest, his only priority now the survival of his own life and his flagship.
The Corrupted Spinosaurus, its bloodlust unquenched, turned its massive head towards the shoreline, its chaotic eyes locking onto the frantic movements of the Dreadnaught Sabre. It let out another deafening roar, a sound of primal hunger, and began to lumber towards its new prey.
At that moment, Alex's remaining 6 wounded Warriors understood. They had witnessed the carnage, the brutal efficiency of this corrupted summon. Their Lord was injured, their commanders exhausted or incapacitated. They were the last line. Their bodies ached, but their resolve was absolute. They had found their second wind, knowing this was their final, glorious stand to ensure their master's survival. They had to buy time.
"For Lord Alex!" one Knight-rank Warrior roared, raising a battered shield.
"Hold the line!" another cried, rallying his comrades.
As the Corrupted Spinosaurus surged forward, the 6 Warriors, battered but resolute, intercepted it. They launched themselves, a desperate, valiant human wall. They used every last ounce of their strength, every skill honed by the Dragon Knight Training Manual, hoping to slow the monster, if only for a few precious seconds. Their Page's Thrusts and Squire's Sweeps, now fueled by a desperate courage, snapped at its scaled hide. The two Knight-ranked Warriors, despite their previous injuries, found a surge of primal strength, unleashing their Dragonheart Strikes, trying to pierce its immense hide.
Kaelen, pushing through the haze of pain, saw the suicidal charge. He knew his men could not hold. He would not let them die in vain. He pulled himself up, his body screaming in agony, barely movable. His eyes found Teddiursa, who was whimpering at his side, sensing his master's distress. "Teddiursa," Kaelen rasped, forcing a smile, "Listen to me, little one. You belong to Alex now. You protect him. Do you understand?" Teddiursa nodded, its eyes wide and glistening.
With a final roar of defiance, Kaelen moved. He lunged, not with a weapon, but with his full body, aiming to grab the Spinosaurus's head as it lumbered past. He was going to tank it, to stall it, to give Erza and Akane a chance.
As he closed in, Teddiursa, remembering Kaelen's words, let out a tiny, surprisingly potent whimper. Its large, innocent eyes seemed to shimmer, and a strange, almost magical effect emanated from them, washing over the Corrupted Spinosaurus.
"Baby-Doll Eyes!"
The Spinosaurus, caught off guard, recoiled for a split second, its ferocious charge faltering, its immense power momentarily dampened. The effect was fleeting, but crucial. It reduced the Spino's attack power, giving Kaelen the vital edge he needed.
Kaelen, seizing the opportunity provided by Teddiursa's unexpected ability, lunged, wrapping his arms around the colossal Spinosaurus's head, locking himself onto its massive jaw. He roared, straining with every fiber of his being, trying to pull the beast's head down, to disrupt its balance. At his desperate, heroic act, the Knight-ranked Warriors, seeing their commander's ultimate sacrifice, unleashed every last Dragonheart Strike they had, concentrating their attacks on the Spino's legs and flanks, hoping to cripple it.
"Erza! Take Alex! Get him away from here! Now!" Akane's voice, though strained and filled with despair, cut through the din, her eyes fixed on Kaelen's impossible struggle.
The Spinosaurus bellowed, enraged by Kaelen's tenacious grip and the unexpected attacks from the Warriors. It thrashed wildly, its immense tail sweeping in a devastating arc. Four of the brave Warriors who had engaged it were caught in the furious swipe, their bodies pulverized instantly, flung into the forest as lifeless ragdolls. Then, with a furious snap, the Spinosaurus bit down on Kaelen, tearing into his body. Kaelen's scream was cut short as the immense jaws closed, his grip on Spino's head finally breaking.
As the Spinosaurus consumed Kaelen, a fleeting opening appeared. Akane, seeing her chance, despite her twisted arms and burning pain, found a surge of adrenaline, a final, desperate burst of strength. She forced herself up, her vision tunneling, and launched herself at the Spinosaurus. Her sword, retrieved from the ground, was a desperate blur, aimed at the beast's massive head. "Dragon Slayer: Silent Strike!" she shrieked, pouring every last ounce of her remaining Dragon Mana into the blow.
The Spinosaurus, sensing the attack, tried to dodge, its massive head twitching, but Akane was too fast, too desperate. Her blade connected with a sickening thud, not clean, but with immense force. The Spinosaurus roared in pain, its roar filled with a new level of agony. Akane's attack had connected, tearing through flesh and bone. One of its eyes exploded in a burst of green ichor, and a massive limb was severed, falling with a wet thud to the forest floor.
The Corrupted Spinosaurus, now blinded in one eye and crippled, shrieked in primal fury. Its instincts took over. It ignored all others, its remaining good eye fixing solely on the source of its pain. With a guttural snarl, the beast lunged at Akane, its remaining claws flashing, and in a horrifying, swift motion, it ripped her apart. Akane didn't even have time to scream.
Erza, witnessing the brutal deaths of Kaelen and Akane, heard Akane's final, desperate command. Her heart ached, her body screamed with exhaustion and fresh grief, but her resolve hardened. She looked at the critically injured Alex, then at the two remaining Warrior guards, pale and trembling. She had to move.
