Chapter 57: Chapter 57: Retreat
The air was thick with the stench of blood and the fresh horror of Akane's death. The Corrupted Spinosaurus, now a monstrous testament to suffering and rage, its remaining eye fixed on the spot where Akane had fallen, let out a guttural shriek of triumph mixed with lingering agony. Its remaining forelimb twitched, and its massive tail lashed, gouging deep furrows in the earth. The sight of Kaelen and Akane, two of his most loyal and formidable commanders, brutally torn apart by his own failed summon, pushed Alex's already injured mind to its absolute limits. A raw, unadulterated fury, cold as ice and hot as molten steel, coursed through him.
"You... monster!" Alex rasped, forcing himself to move. The mid-grade healing potion had worked its magic, closing his most grievous wounds and pulling him back from critical danger, though his body still ached with deep bruising. He lunged, sword and shield raised, stumbling slightly but driven by an incandescent fury.
"Alex, no!" Erza's voice was hoarse, but firm, her eyes pleading. She met Alex mid-stride, deflecting his sword with her spear, physically blocking his enraged advance towards the still-rampaging Spinosaurus. Her Exceed, the chibi white tiger, cried out in distress, sensing the overwhelming emotion.
"My Lord, you cannot!" Erza insisted, her voice cracking with emotion as she held him back. "Look at us! This rage... it will be the end of us here. Akane's last intention was to get you away!" She gestured around them, at the two trembling Warrior guards, at her own blood-soaked armor, at Alex's worn outfit, stained with blood and grime from the desperate battle. "We are too wounded. The beast is crippled but still too dangerous. And Don Krieg... he's retreating, but he's not gone! We need to survive!"
The sheer logic, cold and undeniable, slowly seeped through Alex's rage-filled haze. He looked at Erza's desperate eyes, at the two barely standing Warriors. His gaze then flickered to the spot where Kaelen had fallen, and a pang of grief shot through him. Teddiursa was no longer there; with its connection to Kaelen severed by death, the little bear had simply vanished, its fleeting presence on this battlefield ended. Erza was right. Staying here was suicide.
"Damn it all!" Alex cursed, his voice thick with pain and sorrow. He took a deep, shuddering breath, forcing his emotions down. "You're right, Erza. We move." His gaze hardened, fixing on the only remaining path. "The portal. We're going back. Now."
With Alex making the agonizing decision, Erza, still severely weakened, moved with desperate speed. "Knights! Protect Lord Alex!" she ordered the two remaining Warrior guards. She helped Alex, supporting his weight, and together they, along with Erza's Exceed, stumbled towards the now-faint portal shimmer, located near the beach where they had first appeared. The journey, though short, was an arduous ordeal, every step a torment for their injured bodies. The faint shimmer of the portal beckoned like a distant, impossible dream.
As they reached it, a final surge of distorted mana from the Corrupted Spinosaurus seemed to pulse through the air. The beast, realizing its prey was escaping, roared, its remaining eye burning with vengeance, and bolted towards them.
"Now!" Erza cried, pushing Alex through first, the two Warriors following closely behind, then her Exceed, before she herself plunged into the shimmering light. The portal flared, pulsed violently, and then vanished, leaving behind only the devastated beach, the fallen, and the enraged, crippled Corrupted Spinosaurus, now left to rampage aimlessly on the island.
The transition was instant. One moment, the sounds of a raging beast and a dying battlefield; the next, the familiar, calmer air of the Qin world. They appeared not on the training grounds, but in the private courtyard of the Lord's mansion in Tonryuu, Alex's city. Alex, though no longer critically injured, staggered, his bloodied, grimy uniform and pale face making him appear gravely wounded. Erza, swaying on her feet, barely managed to stay upright. The two Warriors, gasping, immediately knelt beside their Lord. Erza's Exceed looked around, bewildered.
Alex, through gritted teeth, turned to one of the two surviving Knight-ranked Warriors. "Go! Get the medical team! Tell Lady Tsunade and Lady Olvia to come here at once! It's urgent!"
Word spread like wildfire through the mansion. Alex, the triumphant war hero, returned looking as if he had barely survived a massacre. His worn, blood-stained outfit and pale, exhausted face painted a picture of grievous wounds. Tsunade and Olvia arrived swiftly, Tsunade's medical instincts overriding all other concerns. Her eyes widened, a flicker of raw dread crossing her face as she saw Alex's apparent condition. The image of her fallen brother, Nawaki, injured and lifeless, resurfaced in her mind with a painful clarity, a stark reminder of the fragility of life, even for the powerful.
She immediately took charge, her movements a blur of practiced precision. "Get him to the infirmary! Prepare normal medicines, warm water, and bandages! Move!"
As Tsunade and her medical team worked frantically, Olvia looked at the two wounded Warriors who had returned. Her heart sank as they relayed the grim details. How their elite command, so meticulously built, had been decimated. The failed summon, the "Corrupted Spinosaurus," a creature born of Alex's own power, had wiped out almost all of their men from the second pirate ship and claimed the lives of Kaelen and Akane. The raw, unfiltered account of their deaths, of their desperate sacrifices, devastated those who heard it. The grim reality of facing a foe beyond even their combined strength was a bitter pill to swallow.
Olvia felt a cold echo of the destruction of her own homeland, Ohara. Though the scale was different, the feeling of losing everything, of being forced to flee, resonated deeply. Her mind, usually calm and analytical, was in turmoil.
Everyone's mind in the mansion was in turmoil. Tsunade and her medics worked ceaselessly, a desperate fight to stabilize the injured Alex and the two Warriors, and to alleviate their pain. The sounds of desperate activity filled the mansion, a stark contrast to the quiet prosperity Alex had built here.
