Chapter 10 - Sister's Story
Eve Ignis.
The eldest daughter of the Duke Ignis family and a woman several years older than Riel.
Boasting tremendous magical talent and magical skills honed based on that talent, she is an elite affiliated with the royal magic corps despite her young age.
She appeared as a villain in the original story.
In her childhood, she abused her younger sister Riel, who monopolized her parents’ love, and this led to conflicts with Allen.
Appearing in the middle to latter part of the original story, she never directly confronts Riel but appears as Allen’s enemy, showing such hostility that she displays hatred just at the mention of Riel’s name.
As a formidable opponent in the original story boasting powerful magical skills and high position, she eventually plays the role of being defeated by Allen and falling into ruin.
That’s how she was depicted in the original story.
But when I asked Riel about her family, Riel never spoke ill of Eve Ignis.
Rather, seeing her wanting to meet her sister whom she hadn’t seen for years, my determination that the original story knowledge couldn’t be trusted grew stronger.
“Sister… it’s such a busy time for you now…”
“…”
Eve approached Riel without saying anything.
And Eve hugged Riel tightly.
“…Sister?”
“Our Riel, it feels like it’s been so long since I’ve hugged you.”
“……”
“I’m sorry Riel, I’m really sorry.”
After that affectionate action, Riel, who had hesitated for a moment, also raised her hands and hugged Eve back.
Seeing that scene, I spoke to Phyllis who was waiting behind.
“Shall we step outside for a moment?”
“Yes.”
“So, how did you contact her?”
I asked Phyllis who followed me after I stepped outside the tea house for a moment.
Currently, this is a time when magical beasts’ activities are increasing.
It’s a busy time for both the knights and magic corps to focus on repelling magical beasts and protecting various cities, except for the minimum forces guarding the royal capital.
So honestly, I was very worried while sending Phyllis as a contact.
I wondered if she could contact anyone from the duke’s family, just anyone would do.
“I was prepared to use everything I could.”
“…Huh?”
“I borrowed the power of the madam.”
Ah
I had to understand.
My mother, Sylvia Wentos.
Her name before marriage was Sylvia Illin Palaginya.
Although from a branch family, she is still of royal descent.
In her youth, she was also affiliated with the magic corps.
Though there would be limitations, it would certainly be possible for someone like her to hear about the movements of the magic corps.
“Among the duke’s family, Lady Eve happened to be in Orubria territory, so I was able to contact her.”
Orubria territory is located not far from the capital.
Using express transport, it’s a distance that can be reached in less than a few hours.
“In Orubria territory? Should I say that worked out well…”
“The princess was staying there, leading the knights and magic corps. It’s also thanks to that that the permission to bring Lady Eve here came quickly.”
“Just as a reference, which princess?”
“It was Princess Aine.”
…Really, the timing is perfect.
There are three princesses in the Palaginya Kingdom.
The person corresponding to the second princess among them is Princess Aine.
Aine Gine Palaginya.
A royal who is also an excellent magic swordswoman, a character who appears in the original story and is Eve Ignis’s direct superior.
She is acquainted with my mother Sylvia, and used to visit the count’s territory often.
…Hmm.
‘Your Highness! It’s really dangerous!’
‘Bah, you coward! How can you, as a man, tremble before mere magical beasts?!’
…Suddenly, painful memories surfaced.
Thinking about it now, rather than being acquainted with mother, I think that person came to hunt magical beasts in the Wentos count’s territory.
“In fact, the princess also wanted to come here after hearing the situation.”
“You stopped her?”
“Of course.”
“Well done.”
That was really a close call.
If the princess had come, she would have been a great help, but the situation would have gotten much more complicated.
Given her personality, she would have tried to get involved with this matter with about 90% interest.
At that moment, I heard Riel’s voice calling me from inside the cafe, so I cleared my thoughts and entered the cafe.
Eve Ignis was born as the eldest daughter of the Duke Ignis family.
Showing tremendous talent for magic since childhood, she honed her skills under her parents’ expectations.
Her childhood was happy, surrounded by excellent parents, a caring brother, and loyal servants serving the duke’s family.
And in the year she turned 8, her younger sister was born.
Her younger sister was given the name Riel, and grew up receiving affection from family members, including Eve.
Eve was very fond of her shy younger sister, and her younger sister also followed Eve well.
That happiness continued for several years.
But at some point, that happy daily life began to twist.
It started with just a small sense of discomfort.
The knight order serving the duke’s family, its captain Albert Ludwig, introduced his young son to the duke’s family.
“This is my son, Allen.”
Indeed, several years ago, a few months before Riel was born, he had reported that he had a child.
I remember the duke greatly congratulating him and giving him a week’s vacation.
Anyway, that son had grown into a boy over time, and came to greet the duke’s family that his father served.
Allen was a handsome boy with sparkling silver hair.
When he shyly greeted the duke’s family, Duke Ignis received his greeting.
…On the other hand, Eve felt a bit uncomfortable seeing the servants’ gazes concentrated on Allen.
‘…What is this?’
Eve, with an inexplicable sense of anxiety, tightly hugged Riel who was sleeping in her arms.
Allen was permitted to enter and exit the duke’s family on the grounds that he was the same age as Riel and could be a conversation partner for Riel, who might become unskilled at forming relationships with others due to her shyness.
From this time, the uncomfortable feeling Eve had been feeling grew stronger, and Eve began to be wary of Allen, who could be said to be the starting point.
“Get away from Riel right now!”
And she separated him from her precious younger sister, Riel, to protect her.
She couldn’t stand this uncomfortable boy being with her younger sister.
However, not long after, strange rumors began to circulate within the mansion.
Rumors that Eve was bullying Riel.
It was an absurd false rumor, and Eve, furious, immediately tried to find the source of the rumor.
But as the servants were hushing each other, it wasn’t easy to find where the rumor had started.
That wasn’t all.
From some point, it became difficult for Eve to meet Riel.
It was a strange sensation as if something unknown was trying to separate Eve and Riel, and the servants also subtly prevented Eve from meeting Riel.
Eve, who noticed this, was angry and beat and reprimanded the servants, but there was no sign of the situation improving.
Eve, who was as angry as could be, even tried to fire the servants who were rebelling against her, but the final decision on personnel management in the household rested with her father, the duke, or her mother who had been entrusted with household management by him.
But with bad timing, her father, who had recently become busy, was almost always away from the mansion with her mother and brother, and the management of the mansion was entrusted to the butler.
And the butler, who had been serving the duke’s family since childhood, did not listen to her orders.
Eve immediately wrote a letter to her father.
And she asked her maid, who had been serving her for years, to deliver the letter to her father.
She could trust her.
She might be able to deliver the letter to her father and save me from this strange situation.
That expectation was thoroughly betrayed.
Her letter never reached her father.
Even the maid she trusted the most had betrayed her.
Eve fell into fear.
It felt like she alone had been thrown into a different world.
And then, the worst situation occurred.
“…Sister?”
Her younger sister, whom she hadn’t met for almost several months, was in front of her.
The younger sister she truly loved, truly wanted to see.
But most terribly, Eve’s state at this time was not normal.
“…It’s because of you.”
“Huh…?”
“You! Everything has been strange since you were born!”
Due to the crazy surrounding situation and the stress that had piled up, Eve burst out in anger at her younger sister in front of her.
This wasn’t her true heart
She loved her younger sister
She truly wanted to protect her younger sister
“Give it back! I said give it back!”
“……”
Eve grabbed Riel’s shoulders and shook them violently, bursting with anger.
And the moment she looked directly at Riel’s face, which had turned pale white
Huh…?
“……”
‘What am I… what am I doing right now…?’
She realized what she had done.
Eve’s face, now back to her senses, turned blue.
“Ri…Riel…”
“……”
“No… I didn’t mean… I’m sorry…”
Just as she was about to apologize to Riel, who was staring at her blankly with a white face.
“Riel!!”
The true culprit who made this house go mad.
Allen Ludwig came between her and Riel, confronting Eve as if protecting Riel.
“What are you doing?!”
“I… I…”
Riel, pale white and unable to say anything.
Allen standing as if protecting Riel and glaring at her.
And the servants who had gathered at some point, looking at her with cold eyes.
And herself, who was actually shouting at Riel and expressing anger.
Eve turned her trembling eyes towards Riel.
Riel was also looking at Eve.
‘…Ah’
There was fear in Riel’s eyes.
‘Ah…’
That day, Eve Ignis was broken.
When she was old enough, she left the mansion as if escaping.
She entered the academy and immersed herself in study with the sole intention of forgetting everything, and graduated from the academy with excellent grades.
And she succeeded in entering the magic corps at a young age.
Since then, she had never returned to the duke’s family.
It would be a lie to say she wasn’t concerned about her younger sister.
But every time she remembered Riel looking at her with eyes full of fear that day, guilt overwhelmed her.
While focusing on work like that, one day, her superior, Princess Aine, called for her.
When she visited her room, there was someone waiting for her.
“It’s been a very long time, Lady Eve.”
“You are…”
It was the face of Phyllis, a woman who once worked at the duke’s family.
And in the letter she handed to her, there were traces of her longed-for younger sister.
The letter contained her younger sister’s longing for her, an apology, and a request for help.
Her younger sister, whom she hadn’t seen for years and hadn’t conversed with.
Her younger sister, whom she thought would hate her.
Eve Ignis had no reason, nor thought, to refuse.
