Chapter 43
“Indeed! Today’s training ends here!”
“Th-thank you very much…”
Three weeks after the dinner with King Edward.
Today, just like every other day, after finishing General Cyrus’s training, I collapsed to the ground.
“My, oh my… Gustave’s endurance has been put to the test lately…”
“Did you say something…?”
“Haha! It’s nothing at all!”
No, he definitely said something about me. After all, I heard my name.
As I stared daggers at the boisterously laughing General Cyrus:
“Gustave, Your Highness!”
Unusually, Mariette had come to the training grounds. She was usually busy with reports to the kingdom, and until I returned to my room, she would ignore me completely. What’s gotten into her today?
“Haah… Gustave’s personal maidservant, Miss Mariette, isn’t it? She’s quite beautiful…”
“Speaking of which, isn’t there someone like Princess Abigail? Isn’t this a bit too much good fortune? It’s unfair.”
“I can hear you.”
Truly, the knights speak their minds without reservation. I looked at them with exasperation and then headed over to Mariette.
“What’s going on?”
“Well! It just so happened that I had some business nearby, so I came to escort you!”
“I see.”
I replied curtly to Mariette, who was smiling and radiating charm, just as usual. She was deploying her charm to try and captivate me, but today she seemed to be in exceptionally high spirits.
“Well then, if you’ll excuse me.”
“Very well. See you tomorrow.”
I bowed politely to General Cyrus and returned to my room with Mariette.
Then,
“Your Highness Gustave, rejoice! Our homeland has decided to provide support to Princess Abigail!”
“What!?”
Mariette leaned forward with a beaming smile, and I took a step back, my breath catching in my throat.
It wasn’t because Mariette’s face was close, but rather because of her words that I was surprised. I never expected the kingdom to make such a decision. In fact, I have no idea what kind of support they plan to provide to Princess Abigail.
“As a result, a formal letter will be sent from our homeland to the empire. Three months from now, an envoy will visit the imperial capital, Londinia. They will present Princess Abigail with the ‘Iris Emblem’ as a symbol of Valrois… the royal family.”
“Oh…”
I feigned surprise, but in truth, I felt nothing but dishonor. Why would the first princess of Strasclyde, during the midst of a succession dispute, be happy to receive a symbol from an enemy kingdom?
Furthermore, if something like this were to happen during the succession struggle, it would only raise suspicions about the kingdom’s involvement.
“Hehe, with this, we can loudly proclaim that Princess Abigail has the support of the kingdom. It’s an unprecedented event, recognizing the most noble figures from both nations!”
“That’s…true.”
Phew…things are getting a bit complicated. However, according to this woman, it seems a letter is coming from the kingdom, and Edward King will make the final decision. So, for now, I’ll let things unfold naturally…
“Wait a minute. According to what you just said, an envoy from the kingdom is coming…”
“Huh? Yes, it seems so… Wait, could it be?”
Mariette’s voice trailed off, and she gave me a suspicious look. What does this mean? I don’t understand.
“…So, with the presence of the Holy Maiden, it’s no wonder Your Highness Gustave would be so excited.”
“What!?”
The Holy Maiden…Cecil is coming?
“Is that true!?”
“Eek!? Y-yes. According to the communication from the kingdom…”
As I pressed her for answers, Mariette screamed and reluctantly confirmed. I can’t believe that woman is coming…
“And, in addition, Prince Philip will serve as the Holy Maiden’s escort in his role as the Knight Commander.”
“…I see.”
I could only manage those words.
“I understand you’re happy, but could you pay a little more attention to me… (mumble mumble).”
Mariette seems to be saying something, but I don’t really care. All that matters is that woman is coming along with Philip, that worthless scoundrel.
But…wait a minute?
What if I were to ruin the presentation of the ‘Iris Emblem’ to Princess Abigail by the kingdom?
For example, if I were to embarrass them during the ceremony…
“Ahahaha.”
Fortunately, the one coming along with the Holy Maiden is Philip, who’s just full of useless pride and stupidity. So, if he were to mock me, whom he has always looked down upon, he would quickly lose his temper.
“Mariette… this is wonderful. Thank you.”
“Well… I’m happy to hear your thanks, but it’s a bit complicated…”
I have no interest in acting jealous, but she really did a good job.
I imagine their faces contorted in pain and humiliation, and I couldn’t help but smirk.
