Chapter 33: Weakening the Protagonist’s Power – Orchestrating Everything from Behind the Scenes

In the upscale Chao Yin neighborhood—one of the most famous affluent districts in Magic City—every home was worth at least tens of millions.

In front of one luxurious property, a middle-aged woman, Li Ping, clutched a promissory note in her trembling hands. She was livid, her voice shaking with rage.
“This is fraud! I’m calling the police!”

Opposite her stood a group of thuggish men, their expressions dripping with disdain.
“Don’t talk nonsense,” one of them sneered. “The terms are written in black and white. Your son even left his fingerprint on it.”
He laughed derisively. “You can go ahead and report it to the police—or to heaven itself—it won’t make a difference.”

Li Ping’s face twisted with disbelief. “Impossible! My son could never have borrowed this much money!”
The note demanded eight hundred million—a staggering figure that no ordinary person would ever contemplate.

The thug shrugged nonchalantly. “What’s so impossible? Your son had some bad luck. He gambled in our casino for a full day and night. Losing that much is entirely normal.”

“Casino?” Li Ping’s voice broke. Her face paled as realization struck. “You set him up! This whole thing is a scam! I’m not paying!”

Her mind raced. She had always known her son had a gambling problem, frequently mingling with unsavory characters. Yet she had hoped he had some sense of limits. Clearly, she had been wrong.

Tearing the note in half, she shouted, “I refuse to acknowledge this debt!”
With a sharp ripping sound, she shredded the document into pieces.

One of the thugs chuckled. “So, you’re planning to default, huh? Well, let me remind you—that was just a photocopy. The original is safe with us. Tear it all you want; it doesn’t matter.”

Another thug stepped forward, pulling out his phone. “Before you get any ideas, let me show you something.”
He played a video, holding it up for Li Ping to see.

On the screen, her son appeared, tied to a chair. His body was covered in lash marks, and his voice was hoarse as he begged, “Mom, help me…”

The sight shattered Li Ping’s composure. Her hands shook as she pointed at the thugs.
“This is kidnapping! It’s attempted murder! Release my son immediately!”

Unbothered, the thug pocketed his phone. “You have one day to transfer the money to this account. Otherwise, we can’t promise your son will stay unharmed.” He smirked. “Oh, and don’t even think about calling the police. We have connections.”

He leaned closer, his voice dropping to a cold whisper. “If we find out you’ve reported us, don’t blame us for taking a few ‘pieces’ off your son.”

He whistled sharply, signaling his gang to leave. They laughed and jeered as they walked away, leaving Li Ping frozen in place, clutching a slip of paper with a phone number and bank account details.

As time passed, Li Ping and her husband grew increasingly desperate. Their son was in the hands of dangerous people, and they felt utterly powerless.

They debated their options. Calling the police risked their son’s life, but paying the ransom demanded an impossible sum—eight hundred million.

“We’ll pay them first,” Li Ping’s husband finally decided. “Once we get Xiao Zhu back, we’ll report this to the authorities.”

The couple agreed. Their family wasn’t short on wealth; they could manage eight hundred million if necessary. Money could always be earned again, but a life couldn’t be replaced.

They began scrambling to gather the funds, only to find themselves falling short. Despite their vast resources, they could only pool together just over one hundred million. Most of their assets were tied up in investments, which couldn’t be liquidated quickly.

It was then that Li Ping remembered the shares they held in Xu Corporation.
She recalled Xu Hao’s previous offer to buy them back at double the market price. At the time, she had declined, confident in the corporation’s bright future.

Now, with no other options, selling those shares became her last resort.

The phone rang incessantly.

By the time Xu Hao received Li Ping’s call, it was already the next day.
Last night, Su Wanqiu, dressed as a bunny girl, had provided him with an unforgettable experience. Her overwhelming sense of shame had caused her emotional value to skyrocket.

Noticing the caller ID, Xu Hao’s expression turned amused as he pressed the answer button.
“President Xu, this is Li Ping,” she began, explaining her willingness to sell her shares.

“Oh, so it’s about that,” Xu Hao replied casually. “To be honest, Director Li, the shares I currently hold are already sufficient. I don’t really need more…”
Although Xu Hao’s ultimate goal was to regain full control of the company, he deliberately masked any urgency.

He wasn’t about to offer double the market price like before—after all, it wasn’t him who was desperate now.

“Ah?” Li Ping was stunned.

Just some time ago, Xu Hao had been eager to buy her shares at double the price. Why was he suddenly uninterested?

“Well,” he added with a tone of indifference, “if Director Li insists on selling, I can purchase them at the market price.”

Li Ping felt a bitter pang in her heart. While the offer was fair by market standards, it was a significant drop—half of what he had originally offered.

Regret hit her hard. If only she had sold the shares earlier… but there was no use lamenting now.

In the end, she accepted his terms.

At Xu Corporation, the paperwork was finalized, and Xu Hao transferred the funds to Li Ping.

As soon as the money arrived, Li Ping rushed home and wired it to the account provided by the thugs. Then she called the number they had left.

After some back-and-forth, Li Ping and her husband were finally directed to a secluded alley where they found their son in a pitiful state.

The sight was too much to bear, and the couple immediately called the police.

A kidnapping and extortion case involving 800 million yuan was no small matter—it was a shocking crime.

A large police operation ensued, leading them to Happiness Street, where they shut down an underground casino and arrested a number of people.

However, none of the thugs Li Ping had described were among those captured.

The casino turned out to be a property of the Brotherhood gang. Believing the gang was hiding the culprits, the authorities launched an extensive crackdown in the southern district as part of their anti-crime initiative.

At the Brotherhood Gang’s headquarters, the gang leaders were in the middle of a tense meeting.

Chen Mo sat among them, his expression dark and furious.

“Still no news of Ah San and his crew?” he asked coldly.

“Who gave them the audacity to kidnap someone and demand 800 million in ransom? Their actions have dragged the entire Brotherhood Gang into this mess!”

Meanwhile, at Xu Corporation—

In the CEO’s office, Xu Hao leaned back in his chair as his secretary, Li Kun, respectfully reported the results of their recent operation.

It turned out the entire kidnapping had been Xu Hao’s plan all along.

The scheme was a premeditated trap. Xu Hao had instructed Old Mo to recruit a few men from the Brotherhood Gang to carry out the staged kidnapping and frame the gang.

The ultimate goal? To weaken the Brotherhood Gang’s power. Otherwise, the Liu family would be unable to handle them.

In truth, the Brotherhood Gang had a decent leader who refrained from engaging in reckless or illegal activities. The group operated more legitimately than most gangs, avoiding petty theft or underhanded dealings.

But in any large organization, there are always a few bad apples. Greed is a powerful motivator. With the promise of hefty rewards, several low-level thugs had been easily persuaded.

“Are there any loose ends?” Xu Hao asked.

Li Kun replied with utmost deference, “Old Mo and the team boarded a yacht immediately after the job. By now, I’d say the sharks have been well-fed.”
