Chapter 7: Chapter 5: The Bomb Incident

8th April, 1929,

The Indian parliament was in session and there was a disagreement over two bills. The Trade Dispute Bill and The Public Safety Bill. Britishers wanted to pass these bills to restrict trade union in India. If any worker went on a strike, these bills allowed the British to detain them without trial. Bhagat Singh knew that the British wanted to break the backbone of the Indian workers with those bills. And they could use these to arrest any revolutionary at any time.

Now, there were some Indian leaders in the Indian parliament who were opposing these bills. But the British held the majority.

So, on April 8th, 1929,

When the Viceroy Lord Irwin was above to pass the bills, there was small group standing outside the parliament. This group had HSRA members. Durgawati Devi carried some fruits and sweets for Bhagat Singh. Bhagat Singh and his mission were blessed. Because the core committee members of the party knew what was going to happen in a few minutes.

HSRA members entered the parliament. They see the ongoing from the parliament's visitor gallery, of how the bills were being passed. Just when the voting on the Public Safety Bill was about to start Bhagat Singh and his partner BK (Batukeshwar) Dutt threw two bombs. They fire two blank shot in the air and with his comrade BK Dutt, they fling pamphlets in the air. they slout slogans " Inquilab Jindabad " supporting the revolution.

The pamphlet stated that a loud bang was needed to make the deaf hear. Bhagat Singh finally walked on French revolutionary August Vaillant's path, and soon the it was revealed that Bhagat Singh's would meet the same end as August Vaillant.

After setting off the bombs, neither BK Dutt nor Bhagat Singh tried to escape. they wanted to be arrested and to have a trial. And soon afterwards, Nation found out why they did this. After the bombing, the British government argued that Bhagat Singh and BK Dutt's actions triggered a sedition case. But Jawaharlal Nehru (India's first prime minister ) disagreed with this. He gave a speech in Allahabad saying that the revolutionaries choose violence because the British government was cruel and inhuman. But Mahatma Gandhi said that the actions of these young men would make India's independence more difficult.

Jawaharlal Nehru's father Motilal Nehru said that this it was a sad day for the country. And it won't do our country any good. He said that our country had to choose between Gandhi's path and that of Chandra Shekhar Azad and his associates. But Bhagat Singh had full clarity. He saw his arrest as an opportunity and he wanted to use it wisely.
