Chapter 89: Chapter 89: Blackbeard Pirates vs. Kaido of the Beasts
"An Emperor… Kaido of the Beasts?!"
"Why is he here?!"
The Blackbeard Pirates were all shocked and terrified. None of them had expected Kaido to suddenly appear.
"You all are…" Kaido narrowed his eyes at the group. At first, he thought it was his old comrade, Shiki. But to his surprise, it was a bunch of unfamiliar faces.
"Wororororo… I remember now. You're the guy who betrayed Whitebeard and the Marines. What was your name again… Blackbeard Teach, right?"
Kaido, reeking of alcohol, stared at the group and pieced together their identities.
"Kaido of the Beasts... what brings you here?!"Teach recovered from the shock and forced a smile.
"Why wouldn't I be here? The real question is, what are you doing here? The Float-Float Fruit power… that's Shiki's ability. Where is he?" Kaido scanned the area.
"Oh right, you and the Golden Lion were once crewmates." Teach chuckled.
"You could say that. So, where is he?" Kaido asked.
"Dead."
Teach suddenly made a move. The ground trembled, and a giant rocky mouth opened behind Kaido, clamping down and swallowing him, dragging him underground.
"Hey! That's way too reckless! He's one of the Four Emperors!" Devon shouted.
"If we don't act now, we won't get another chance," Teach said excitedly.
"You're insane," Devon shuddered.
"Even if we didn't attack, he would have come for us," Shiryu said.
"Never expect mercy from enemies. We're all pirates—he'd see us as prey," Lafitte added.
"If we kill an Emperor, we could replace them, nya," Avalo Pizaro said, laughing.
"Among the current Emperors, the best seat to take would be Charlotte Linlin's. We were originally targeting Shanks, burp!" Van Augur hiccuped drunkenly.
"Wehahaha! Let's take down Kaido, Captain! He's an Emperor anyway!" Burgess shouted, raising his arms.
"You idiots! Get ready, he's coming back!" Teach shouted as his face darkened.
Everyone leapt back, sensing the tremor underfoot.
BOOM!
A massive figure erupted from the ground, and it was a giant blue dragon.
"The Float-Float Fruit… So Shiki really is dead, and his power fell into your hands," Kaido hovered midair, looking down at Teach.
"Zehahaha! I killed him and took his fruit!" Teach laughed.
"You? Kill Shiki?" Kaido looked shocked. He knew exactly how strong Shiki was.
Back in the Rocks Pirates, Whitebeard had been the second-strongest after Captain Rocks, with Shiki right after him, then came Big Mom and the rest. At the time, Kaido had just been an apprentice and was nowhere near their level. Shiki could beat him with ease. Kaido only caught up after eating the Fish-Fish Fruit and years of training.
Even 18 years ago, when he fought Kozuki Oden, he had only barely reached the level of an Emperor and almost got killed by Oden's Conqueror Haki.
Hearing of Shiki's death brought a strange nostalgia.
He had liked the chaotic Rocks Pirates—brutal infighting, constant competition. In his eyes, the fall of the crew was Rocks' fault for losing to Roger and Garp. If he had won, the world would have belonged to them.
"Surprised? Your old comrade is dead," Teach mocked.
"A bit. Shiki was strong back then. Though I heard he cut off his own legs to escape Impel Down. If I'd met him after that, killing him would've been easy," Kaido said confidently.
Teach stared at Kaido warily.
Kaido grinned. Flames flickered between his dragon teeth.
The Blackbeard Pirates instantly realized what was coming.
"Bolo Breath!"
Kaido reared back and unleashed a torrent of flame at the crew below.
The intense heat turned the sky red. The surrounding sea glowed with blazing light, igniting the clouds.
"Rise!"
Teach raised his hand, summoning a massive rock wall to block the flames.
But the wall melted and shattered instantly. The crew had no choice but to scatter.
The ground was scorched. The Blackbeard Pirates were left singed and scrambling.
"Wororororo! Is this all you've got??" Kaido sneered from above.
SWISH!
A cold glint sliced through the air, and a crimson blade flashed at Kaido.
CLANG!
Sparks flew as the weapon struck Kaido's body.
"Interesting…" Kaido looked down. The attacker was shocked.
"No way…"
Shiryu's eyes widened. His sword hadn't even left a scratch.
"Nice blade, but your will isn't sharp enough. A blade without conviction won't break my scales," Kaido mocked, then slammed a claw at Shiryu.
SMACK!
Shiryu flew like a cannonball. Kaido opened his mouth again.
"Demolishing Wind!"
Dozens of wind blades flew down toward the crew. Teach barely managed to avoid them as Burgess dragged him away.
BOOM!
Suddenly, a colossal figure dropped from the clouds. Bigger than any giant, a towering monster slammed down and grabbed Kaido.
"What the hell?!" Kaido turned, astonished at the sheer size of the creature, far larger than even the ancient giants.
He remembered how much it had cost him to obtain the Numbers from the World Government.
'Such a huge man…'
"Got you" Sanjuan Wolf grinned.
But before he could rejoice, Kaido twisted his neck and unleashed a point-blank Barro Breath, blasting Wolf away.
Still, it gave Teach his chance. He flew over and grabbed Kaido's chest.
"Black Vortex!"
Kaido suddenly felt weak. His strength drained. His dragon scales faded. He could feel his power slipping away.
"My..abilities?!" Kaido's eyes widened in shock.
"What did you do?!" Kaido roared.
"This is my second Devil Fruit, a Logia type, the Dark-Dark Fruit," Teach said with a wicked grin. He clenched his fist and punched Kaido in the face.
Kaido took the punch and glared sideways at Teach.
"What are you waiting for?! Attack!" Teach shouted.
"Got it!"
Burgess charged in and landed a punch on Kaido's face.
Van Augur opened fire. Lafitte slashed with his blade. Doc Q barely raised a cannon and fired at Kaido's head. Devon and the others launched their own attacks.
The same scene had played out recently, except their last target had been the weakened Golden Lion, Shiki.
