Chapter 1: Chapter 1: The Waitress
10:44 AM.
Jenny Jane sat in the guest chair across from the office desk, crossing her legs elegantly and resting one hand on the armrest. "There are exactly one hour and forty-seven minutes until 12:30 PM, Mr. Vigeri. It's a pleasure to meet you."
Lowering her voice slightly, she shifted her legs and offered a composed, almost mocking smile as she locked eyes with Cesare Vigeri. "Now, you have one hour and forty-seven minutes to convince me that you're a good agent."
Cesare's expression remained unchanged—cold and unwavering. The only giveaway was the slight twitch of his nose and a barely perceptible flicker in his gaze. But Jenny knew—she had successfully piqued his interest.
"Very well," Cesare said. "You have managed to capture my attention. Bonus points."
He pulled out an empty folder, snapped it open, and in a polite but distant manner, asked symbolically, "Shall we begin officially?"
Three and a Half Months Ago, Los Angeles
Jenny Jane—formerly known as Chen Zhen—stared into the mirror, motionless, her expression solemn.
It was a beautiful face.
At twenty years old, Jenny was at the peak of youthful beauty. Unlike her peers from the distant East, she had learned to apply makeup since seventh grade (equivalent to first-year middle school), honing her skills over six or seven years to subtly enhance her already striking features. Even without makeup, she was undeniably a beauty.
Her appearance bore strong Germanic traits—blonde hair, piercing green eyes, a straight nose, and well-defined facial features. Standing at 5'6" (1.67m) with a slender yet proportionate figure by Caucasian standards, Jenny Jane was the kind of woman who turned heads on the street. She could easily gain entry to exclusive nightclubs without waiting in line, simply by virtue of her looks.
Logically, someone like her had no reason to look this serious. Life, for someone as attractive as her, should never be devoid of fun.
But right now, her pressed lips and tensed shoulders told a different story.
Jenny Jane—no, Chen Zhen—was under immense pressure.
And she wasn't overreacting.
She had traveled through time.
From 2014 to 2001.
From Beijing to Los Angeles.
From a Chinese woman to a Caucasian one.
The year was now 2001. Computers had just become mainstream, and the internet was beginning to reshape people's lives. Bulky "brick phones" were slowly being replaced by sleeker mobile phones. But Steve Jobs had yet to launch the iPhone—even the iPod hadn't been released yet. Coming from 2014, Chen Zhen found early 21st-century life jarring. There was no Weibo, Twitter, or Facebook. The primary means of online communication were ICQ and MSN—names that had long faded into obscurity. If she hadn't been reborn in early 2000s America, she probably wouldn't have even remembered these things, let alone realized how much technology had changed her life.
But that wasn't her biggest problem.
Her biggest problem was that she had gone to sleep in her Beijing apartment—only to wake up thirteen years earlier in the body of a completely different person. And she now possessed all of this person's memories.
Jenny Jane Jefferson.
Born in 1981, social security number 422-11-6742, from a low-income family in Alabama.
Her father was a convicted felon, sentenced to over a century in prison for robbery. He had been behind bars since she was six years old.
Her mother had abandoned her, never to return.
After her grandmother passed away, she had been placed into the foster care system, bouncing between multiple homes.
Two years ago, she graduated high school and moved to Los Angeles to chase her dream of becoming an actress. But like countless others, she failed and ended up working as a waitress in a restaurant.
That was the sum of her life. A few sentences could sum it all up.
And now, trapped in Jenny Jane's body, was Chen Zhen—a woman from an entirely different world.
Her original life?
Chen Zhen, born in 1982, came from a middle-class family in Hangzhou, China. Her parents were both government employees.
She had attended the Beijing Film Academy, where she fell in love with and married the son of a wealthy businessman who was five years her senior. After graduating, she settled into life as a rich housewife.
At the time of her time travel, she had an eight-year-old child and was in the middle of a divorce battle.
Since her in-laws had gradually handed over their business to their son, and she had several properties under her name, she was expected to receive a divorce settlement of over 30 million yuan (including real estate assets).
From a broad perspective, at this particular moment in time, Jenny Jane and Chen Zhen's lives weren't that different.
But ten years later, Jenny Jane would most likely remain at the bottom of society, struggling to get by.
Meanwhile, Chen Zhen would be a wealthy, independent woman with no financial worries.
To go from Chen Zhen to Jenny Jane—the sheer drop in status was staggering.
If suicide could return her to her original body, she would already be standing on the rooftop.
But she knew that wouldn't work.
She hadn't just randomly reincarnated—she had a mission.
"Dominate Hollywood."
That was it. Five vague words.
When she woke up in Jenny Jane's body, she instinctively understood that once she conquered Hollywood, she would have the freedom to choose whether to return to her old life.
But the logical contradiction hit her immediately—
If she truly managed to "dominate Hollywood," wouldn't she already be living the dream?
Why would she want to go back?
Another unsettling question followed—if she was here, did that mean her original body was still in Hangzhou?
If she and her old self ever met, what would happen?
Where was the real Jenny Jane now? Did she wake up in Chen Zhen's body?
Of course, these were questions she had no way of answering.
First, just thinking about them gave her a splitting headache.
Second, even if she wanted to fly to Beijing to find out, she was dirt poor and couldn't even afford a plane ticket. Not to mention, as an American with no ties to China, getting a visa would be nearly impossible.
The reality was this:
Jenny Jane had barely finished high school. She had an average education, a mediocre SAT score, and no money for college. Even if she had attended a no-name university, it wouldn't have landed her a high-paying job—probably not even better than waitressing.
Chen Zhen, on the other hand, had no real work experience. She had spent her entire career being a rich housewife, focusing on keeping her husband happy and saving money for herself. In short, her actual skills were close to zero.
So instead of chasing impossible questions, Jenny Jane—or rather, Chen Zhen—needed to survive and rise.
She had to change her fate.
After just two days of working as a waitress, she desperately wanted out.
She needed to land an acting job immediately—anything would be better than standing for twelve hours straight in a restaurant.
Time was of the essence.
Looking into the mirror, Jenny Jane took a deep breath, checked the clock, and stepped out to start her shift.
Because at this moment, she was nothing more than a restaurant waitress.
