Chapter 7: Vernon death
After experiencing the lingering effects of the NZT drug, Ryan logs into his internet banking account, maxes out his credit card loan, and starts reading about stock trading. While he quickly grasps the basics, he decides to dive into intraday trading for quick profits. By the end of the day, he slumps into his chair, exhausted, wiping the sweat from his forehead. He counts his gains—having invested nearly $3,500, he has made a profit of around $500.
"Not bad for a start," he thinks. "In a few days, I'll have enough to buy a larger quantity of drugs from Vernon."
Days pass, and Ryan continues making money, steadily growing his wealth. Eventually, he decides it's time to visit Vernon to buy more NZT. Before heading out, he silently appreciates his decision to exchange contact information with both Vernon and Eddie. He calls Vernon and informs him that he wants to purchase a large quantity of NZT and advises him to stock up.
Vernon, excited by the prospect of a hefty commission, readily agrees. "No problem, it'll all be ready by tomorrow morning," he assures Ryan.
The next morning, Ryan arrives at Vernon's house and knocks on the door. Vernon opens it with a broad grin, ushering him inside.
"Did you bring the money?" Vernon asks eagerly. "I got the drugs you asked for."
Ryan nods and pats his backpack. "I have the cash right here. Let's do the exchange quickly—I'm in a hurry."
Vernon chuckles. "Don't worry, man. I'm just as eager to get my hands on that money."
He brings out a box and places it in front of Ryan. "Check it—everything's in there."
Ryan carefully inspects the contents, ensuring everything is as promised. Satisfied, he hands Vernon the money and leaves. On his way out, he spots Eddie approaching.
"Hey, Eddie," Ryan greets him. "Good to see you, man. You look different. But I'm in a rush—we'll catch up later."
After a brief exchange, Ryan leaves quickly, knowing that Vernon's days are numbered. He remembers that Vernon is going to be murdered soon, and as one of the last people to contact him, he could come under police scrutiny.
He hides the box of drugs deep in a forest before heading home. Now, all he has to do is wait for the case to be closed before making his next move. But first, he needs to take care of his rent, pay back the café owner, and quit his job by the end of the month.
Ryan doesn't have to wait long. Two days later, a police officer arrives at his door.
"Mr. Ryan, we have some questions about your relationship with Vernon."
Ryan keeps his expression neutral. "I was his friend. I only met him recently."
"Where were you in the last two days? Can anyone confirm your whereabouts?"
"I've been at home. I was injured, and my landlord can verify that." He hesitates before adding, "Why? Did Vernon do something wrong? Is he okay?"
The officer's expression darkens. "We regret to inform you that your friend Vernon was found dead in his house. We're investigating, and the last two people who contacted him were you and Eddie Morra. Please remain in town until the case is closed. If you come across any information, let us know. Thank you for your cooperation."
Ryan nods as the officer leaves.
He knows he has to act normal in the coming days to avoid drawing suspicion.
As the month ends, Ryan receives a call from the police station. They inform him that Vernon's case is closed, and he is no longer a suspect. He is free to leave town.
"I wasn't truly free before—working at the café, juggling stock trading. But now, it's time to put my real plan into action."
Ryan knocks on his landlord's door. The older man opens it and immediately asks, "Did you bring the money? It's the end of the month—you're out of time. No more excuses."
Ryan pulls out a stack of cash. "Here's the full three months' rent. Thanks for putting up with me."
The landlord looks shocked as he takes the money. He clearly hadn't expected Ryan to pay in full. Ryan smirks, enjoying his reaction, then walks away, leaving the man standing there, speechless.
Next, he heads to the café. He greets his coworkers before approaching his boss.
"Hey, boss. Here's the money I owe you," he says, handing over the cash.
"There was no rush, you know," his boss replies, looking concerned. "Are you doing okay now?"
Ryan nods. "I feel relieved now that I've cleared my debts. Everything's fine. Thanks for helping me when I needed it."
"You're my employee. It's my job to look after you," the boss says kindly.
Ryan takes a deep breath. "Boss, I'm here to resign. After everything that's happened, I need to find a serious job or start my own business. Wish me luck."
The boss sighs but nods. "If that's what you want, I'll handle the paperwork. Good luck, Ryan."
After collecting his final salary and finishing the paperwork, Ryan bids farewell to his coworkers, boss, and the café. His past is now truly behind him.
"Now it's time to invest in drugs and find a permanent solution.
