Chapter 138: Chapter 121: Tension in the house
So, Hina and Kai went to the kitchen to prepare something to eat.
Hina was silent, almost as if she were angry.
Kai tried several times to talk to her, only getting monosyllabic answers in return.
He probably already understood why.
He got involved , and that was something Hina didn't want.
But Kai's hands were already dirty.
And the fact that Hina once told him "You're perfect now" unconsciously influenced him a lot.
There was no redemption or turning back now, especially since his mind often recalled images of his first kill, committed purely out of survival instinct.
While his hands chopped the vegetables, Kai silently thought about many things.
And there were some unre
For some strange reason, Yuki Nakamura hadn't contacted him yet.
Neither had Hana, nor Hiro.
Kai was so distracted that he didn't even notice Hiro's call on his phone.
After cutting the tomatoes and putting them in the pot, Kai tried speaking to Hina again.
"H-Hey… everything okay?" Kai asked, scratching the back of his head.
Hina, who was slicing the meat, stopped.
She looked directly into Kai's eyes, her gaze intense, while her hands still gripped the knife tightly.
"Yeah, everything's fine, Kai," Hina said with a nervous smile, her voice low and almost threatening, as her hand sliced another piece of meat in an instant, with a strike that made the cutting board resonate.
Kai shivered, understanding that the real message was "Leave me alone for now."
He felt sorry, but at the same time, he didn't care all that much.
He also wanted to "save" and "protect" Hina in his own way and wanted to prove himself as someone worthy of staying by her side.
In silence, they continued preparing a meal that could feed everyone.
They kept going until the sound of Kai's doorbell echoed through the house.
"I'll get it!" Akira called from the other room.
Then, the sound of footsteps echoed in the hallway, followed by the creak of the door opening.
It was Rei, with Yuna by his side, dressed in a fairly casual outfit.
"Excuse me," Rei said politely, walking in hand-in-hand with his "beloved."
Akira didn't reply; she simply held the door open.
Then Yuna stepped in, clearly embarrassed.
She was obviously feeling uncomfortable.
Still, she entered Kai's home.
"I just want all of this to be over." Those were the only thoughts running through Yuna's mind.
"What a lovely smell," Rei said, smiling and sniffing the air. "Someone's been busy," he added, walking into the kitchen with Yuna.
Kai glanced at the couple, greeting them, doing his best to maintain a neutral-friendly expression.
Yuna, on the other hand, looked away and greeted them in a low voice, while still holding Rei's hand.
She didn't want Kai to see her like this.
Hina, however, greeted Yuna with an almost threatening smile.
There was tension in the house.
The plan was still undefined, and they had to act as soon as possible.
After a while, all of them sat down at the table while the two lovebirds finished to prepare the dinner for everyone.
But , unfortunately, there weren't enough chairs.
So, Kai spoke.
"Uhm… I should have more chairs in the closet. I'll be back in a minute." He said, while scratching the back of his head.
Rei smiled warmly at him.
"It's okay. We won't start without you." He said with a reassuring tone.
Hina looked at her boyfriend.
"Do you need help?" She asked, with a low voice.
Kai shook his head.
"No, it's okay. Wait here." He said, trying to sound as natural as he could.
Hina remained silent while seeing her boyfriend walking away.
Kai then went directly to the closet of his house.
He didn't open that place very often since it was the place where he used to place all the old things or stuff that wasn't necessary.
He then tried to open the door, but with no success.
The door was closed.
"Oh… right… the keys. My head is on another planet." He then turned around to go get the keys that were on the key holder at the entrance of his house.
But… right before his eyes, stood a dark figure.
The only sight of it, sent him a wave of terror down all his spine.
All he could see were its red and bloody eyes.
Kai got scared and fell with his back on the door.
His hand reached his heart, noticing that his heartbeat became really fast.
"H-Hey!!!" He exclaimed, once he realized that the figure right in front of him was nothing more than Hina.
She didn't say anything.
She just looked at the scared Kai, who was leaning his back against the wall, with a rapid breath.
"Hina! You scared me! You shouldn't sneak like this!" Kai said, with a scared voice.
Hina didn't reply to his words.
Her eyes were still locked into his.
She just held out her hand to him.
"Were you searching for this?" She whispered.
She had the key in her hand.
Kai remained silent for some seconds before speaking.
"Y-Yea. Thanks." He said, looking relieved.
He then tried took the key from her hand, but Hina blocked him.
Her other hand grabbed his wrist with a firm and tight grip, enough to stop his blood circulation.
She then leaned closer to his face.
"Kai. Do you understand now? Do you understand why I want you to stay out all of this? I could kill you in 87 different ways." Hina said, with an aggressive voice, before leaving Kai's hand.
She clearly sent him a quick but deep message.
Kai didn't speak.
Hina scared him a lot.
But he understood what she wanted to say.
She tried to make him understand in the easy way with no succes.
This was probably the hard way.
After that, Hina spoke again.
"I'll wait you in the kitchen." She said, before leaving Kai alone and dropping the key on the floor.
"Fuck…" he said to himself while taking a deep breath to calm down.
Criminal life was not for him.
But he wanted to help Hina.
Kai then grabbed the key from the ground and opened the door.
He turned on the light and saw how the closet was.
A familiar smell of old touched his nose.
He tried to remove what happened earlier from his mind.
"Okay… let's see… the chairs…" he said , while looking around.
He looked until he found them standing in the right corner of the room.
"Oh! There you are." He said, while taking some steps towards them.
But, he didn't see under his feet, so he accidentally fell down.
"Ouch…!" He said, after falling with his torso on the floor.
After that, he then felt a strange thing pressing against his chest.
He got up, and took a look.
His eyes couldn't believe what he was seeing.
"What…? What is this doing here?" He said, while feeling a strange pang of fear.
He saw Hiro's journal standing there, with… some strange traces of blood on its cover.
"What the fuck…" he said to himself.
He was going to pick it but a voice called out for him.
"Kai!! Are you okay??" This was Hina's voice.
"Yes!!! I just stumbled!!! It's okay!!!" He exclaimed.
"…I don't have a good feeling about this." He thought, while he was about to take a small read on it.
A strange feeling was creeping in his mind.
His instincts were telling him not to care, while his mind wanted to know…
Bad…
