Chapter 32: Bad News
Because the sun was no longer interested in paying attention to them, the group left Earth with ease, encountering no interference at all. The scenery outside streaked past quickly as Doraemon's ship moved at incredible speed. In just a short moment, they were near the edge of the solar system. Then, the ship suddenly stopped in a vast and silent expanse of space.
"The speed of this ship is amazing…" Rim remarked in awe. It was important to note that this location was at the edge of the solar system, yet the ship had reached it in just a few minutes.
"But… why did we stop here?" The others looked at Doraemon with confusion. Surrounding the ship was nothing but the pitch-black emptiness of space. The ship didn't seem to have encountered any obstacles, so why had Doraemon chosen to stop here?
Doraemon smiled, turned to the group, and said, "Because we've arrived!" He then spoke something in the Përjetësian language to the control panel. Gradually, the walls of the ship became transparent and then disappeared entirely, revealing the profound darkness of space. It felt as though they were floating in the void itself. Suspended in this vast expanse, everyone couldn't help but feel an overwhelming sense of unreality.
Before their eyes, a colossal spherical structure silently emerged from the cosmic darkness.
It was unimaginably vast—a perfect, immense sphere that seemed even more geometrically precise than anything that could be drawn with a compass. Its sheer size inspired awe and an indescribable sense of wonder. Such a structure appearing in the universe was nothing short of an unimaginable miracle. For humanity, its form was undoubtedly artificial, as the universe could not naturally produce such perfection.
Yet, its immense size was overwhelming. As they drew closer, it exuded a sense of pressure and awe. It was impossible for humanity to construct something of such magnitude and precision—such a feat was beyond even imagination.
In the face of this massive structure, words became meaningless. The silent, rotating sphere seemed to narrate everything by itself: the pinnacle of science, dedication, strength, and miracles.
Kelly gasped, clutching her chest, unable to find words.
As they drew closer, the sphere seemed to engulf their entire field of vision. The universe vanished behind it, replaced by an endless metallic ocean filling every corner of their sight.
Then the sphere began to emit faint, rhythmic lights that radiated outward from its center. Soon, the lights enveloped the entire sphere before vanishing behind it. This pulsating light repeated in a regular cycle. At the center, a small, black hole-like opening appeared, and the spaceship began to head directly toward it.
The ship slowly accelerated toward the black hole, which grew larger as they approached. What first appeared as a black hole soon revealed itself to be an immense entrance, emitting the radiant lights they had observed earlier.
As they approached, they felt as though they were being pulled inside. As the ship neared, the metallic sea receded, replaced by the blackness of a tunnel. Soon, their entire view was enveloped in darkness.
"What a massive tunnel…" Kelly estimated its diameter to exceed ten kilometers. Eventually, everything plunged into complete darkness, true obscurity.
Lights flickered on, dispelling the darkness. They found themselves in a gigantic hall where the ship had stopped.
"Where exactly are we?" Connie and Rim asked curiously.
"We're in an orbit with twice the diameter of Pluto's, synchronized with the sun's orbit," Doraemon explained. "This is the perfect place to observe humanity."
"The lights we saw earlier—are they the reason humans have never discovered this place?" Connie asked.
"That's right," Doraemon nodded. "We didn't want to be discovered, so we used a special type of light to cleverly avoid human detection."
After saying this, Doraemon opened the front door of the spaceship and led the group out.
"Welcome to the Earth Observation Station of the Përjetësia, humans!" Doraemon announced proudly as they stepped out.
Everyone looked around in amazement, captivated by their surroundings.
After a while, Kelly couldn't help but ask, "It seems like there's no one else here…?"
"There aren't many staff on this station, but they're always here. You just can't see them!" Doraemon shrugged and explained.
The group suddenly remembered what Doraemon had mentioned earlier: the Përjetësia had evolved to exist as pure consciousness, invisible to the naked eye. Traveling with Doraemon for so long, they had nearly forgotten this fact.
After they had taken in the sights, they turned their attention back to Doraemon. Shizuka asked, "So, what's your plan to save the solar system?"
Instead of answering right away, Doraemon motioned for them to follow. He led them through metallic hallways into a large room equipped with various amenities. He showed them how to use the facilities and said, "I'll be discussing the plan with the other staff here. If we can, we'll find a way to repel the black spot and try to communicate with the Sun. After all, it is a living being. If we can negotiate and understand the black spot better, that would be ideal. If not, we'll resort to other measures. This discussion won't take too long, but it will take at least a day. In the meantime, rest here. This room is designed to replicate human needs on Earth. Follow the instructions I gave you earlier if you need anything—it'll provide!"
Seeing everyone nod in agreement, Doraemon continued, "Alright, I'll be leaving for a while!" With that, his body began to tremble before collapsing motionless.
Nobita quickly rushed to lift Doraemon and placed him on a chair. Connie, on the other hand, sprawled on a bed, stretching as she said, "So, we just wait now?"
"Is it okay to leave everything to the Përjetësians like this?" Karen asked worriedly, sitting next to Nobita.
"We don't have any other options," Rim sighed, leaning against the wall.
"Yeah, we can only hope everything goes smoothly..." Kelly sat at the table, sharing Karen's unease. She couldn't shake the feeling of impending trouble, given how events had unfolded thus far. Today had been nothing but one chaotic event after another. She could only hope things would go well this time.
"Does anyone want to take a shower?" Shizuka suddenly asked, appearing more at ease than the rest. She had decided to trust Doraemon completely. Besides, they were already here; there was nothing else they could do but wait, so worrying seemed pointless.
"If no one wants to, I'll go first…" Shizuka was about to prepare for a shower when Doraemon's body suddenly trembled again and collapsed.
Nobita hurried to him, stammering in concern. "Are you okay? Why… why are you back so soon? You said it would take at least a day…" His voice quivered with worry.
The group's unease intensified. As Nobita said, Doraemon had claimed it would take a day. Yet only a few minutes had passed, and Doraemon was already back. This could mean two things: either the matter was simpler than expected, and they had already devised a solution, or something had gone wrong, forcing Doraemon to return immediately. If it were the latter…
They all silently prayed it wasn't.
But their prayers went unanswered.
Gasping for breath, Doraemon finally managed to speak and delivered devastating news: "A mysterious force has attacked this station. All the Përjetësia staff here… are dead."
