Chapter 1: A Strange Dream
In his dream, Xia Yan felt a splitting headache, as if he had been struck by an iron bar. A flood of memories, some his own, some not, surged into his mind, merging into a confusing whirlwind. He felt as if he was becoming someone else, but his own will ultimately prevailed. The memories that didn't belong to him turned into something like a video, sinking deep into his mind, like vague childhood and adolescence memories.
In the dream, he was someone else, a girl. Lying in her room, eating potato chips, drinking Coca-Cola, and watching an anime called "Youth Journey" on her computer. Xia Yan had never heard of this work, but as he put himself in the girl's perspective, the name flashed into his mind.
Xia Yan, in this strange dream state, watched the heartwarming drama from the girl's perspective. After all, the light novel, anime, manga, game, and other two-dimensional entertainment industries of the Dragon Country are extremely developed, the fourth largest industry in the country. The two-dimensional entertainment works of the Dragon Country are popular all over the world, and most citizens, especially elementary and middle school students, are fans. Xia Yan was no exception.
The girl in the dream watched the anime "Youth Journey" episode by episode, happy and carefree. She didn't need to work, go to school, or worry about social interactions. Her parents had passed away early, leaving her a fortune of hundreds of millions in a trust fund. She only needed to do what she liked, be a "dry girl", meet friends to go to comic exhibitions, collect figures, and spend her annual income of millions on her hobbies.
Xia Yan, in this dream state, felt the same happiness as the girl. He felt as if he was living the perfect life of an otaku.
While watching the anime, the girl ate a sweet glutinous rice ball with a crispy sesame filling and chili peppers. Xia Yan, with his strong sense of substitution, found it hard to describe the taste, but she savored it with pleasure.
The girl then focused on the computer screen, where the anime "Youth Journey" awaited her. The heroine, Futaba, meets her love from elementary school, Guang, who had moved away for family reasons. A bittersweet love story unfolds.
The plot was very good. The two young people who liked each other meet again in high school, but Futaba finds herself in a love triangle with her best friend. She needs to choose between friendship and love.
In the sixth episode, Futaba decides to give Guang an answer. On the way home, she apologizes, saying she forgot something at school, and turns away as the train is about to leave.
The train doors close, separating Futaba and Guang. The future of their relationship hangs in the balance.
"Oh, I can't bear to watch. What if Guang doesn't get off the train? I'll be so upset that I won't be able to sleep. To avoid trouble, I'll go to sleep and watch it tomorrow!", the girl muttered, turning off the computer.
Xia Yan, who was in the girl's body, felt frustrated. He wanted to keep watching!
The screen went black. Xia Yan woke up, sweating.
"What was that?", he wondered. The dream felt so real.
Suddenly, a light bulb went off in his mind.
Blue Star, a girl. It seemed that the soul of a girl from another world had entered his body, but the fusion had failed. Or rather, it had partially failed. Her will had been wiped out, and only her residual memories remained in his brain. He could see fragments of her life in that world when he dreamed.
So, that anime, "Youth Journey"...
Xia Yan gritted his teeth. He wanted to know what happened to Futaba and Guang!
But at the same time, reality hit him hard.
Xia Yan was 16 years old, 1.76 meters tall, and weighed 63 kg. He was a second-year student at Nancheng No. 3 Middle School. His mother had died of illness ten years ago.
A month ago, his father's small company went bankrupt due to the economic crisis and mismanagement. He couldn't bear the blow and passed away with his mistress, leaving Xia Yan with a huge debt.
The house where Xia Yan lived would be sold to pay off his father's debts. He had no relatives to turn to for help. His former relatives were basically his father's creditors.
The harsh reality that Xia Yan faced was the pressure of survival. A 16-year-old high school student would be homeless and penniless in three months.
He had few options. Dropping out of school and entering society was one of them. But he could also try to continue studying.
Xia Yan chose to continue studying. He could apply for scholarships and student loans.
But he needed to solve the problem of his survival.
His father had been basically stripped of all his assets except for the house where Xia Yan was temporarily living. He only had 4,000 yuan in his savings.
His girlfriend, Su Ling, broke up with him after learning of his family's bankruptcy. After all, Xia Yan had courted her with expensive gifts, and now he had no money.
Society was cruel. Even high school girls cared about their boyfriends' financial situation.
"Anyway, I'm going to finish high school", Xia Yan decided. "It's hard to get a good job in Longguo with only a high school diploma."
But he needed to find a way to support himself for the next year and a half. His 4,000 yuan wouldn't be enough.
"Is there any way to make money while I study?", he wondered.
Sitting on his bed, looking out the window of the 21st floor, Xia Yan admired the beautiful scenery of South City.
"It's a pity that I won't be able to see this view anymore soon", he lamented.
His eyes turned to his closet full of anime, light novels, and manga.
Suddenly, an idea popped into his head.
"I don't know how to draw manga, make games, or write animation scripts. But I can write novels! My Chinese is very good", Xia Yan thought.
"And the anime 'Youth Journey' I watched last night is very good. It's much more interesting than the romance stories I used to read."
"In Nancheng, there are several light novel clubs. If I rewrite 'Youth Journey' as a light novel and submit it to a club, maybe I can get it published. The royalties might be enough to support me."
The boy's eyes lit up.
He knew that the two-dimensional entertainment industry was very competitive. But he also knew that if he could stand out, the income would be very high.
Xia Yan believed that "Youth Journey" was a very good work. He thought that his vision as a fan of anime, manga, and light novels was not a niche. If he liked the story, other people would like it too.
He didn't need to make a lot of money. He just wanted enough to support himself and finish high school.
And most importantly, writing a novel would allow him to study and work at the same time. He could write during classes for subjects he didn't like.
"I'm a genius!", he thought.
Xia Yan got out of bed and picked up paper and pen.
But there was a problem. He could only see the girl's memories in his dreams. And the anime "Youth Journey" had been interrupted last night.
"Will I continue to see the rest of the anime in my dream tonight? Or will I never remember this part of the story again?", he wondered.
"Hehe", he chuckled. "Why worry so much? The most important thing now is to write the first part of the story that I know. The rest is a problem for later."
He needed to focus on passing the editor's review. If they didn't accept his manuscript, all his worries would be useless.
