Chapter 12: Enlightenment
The incident occurred when he was twenty years of age.
A new phase of his transformation.
Until now, the process had focused on the physical aspect of his transformation, but now he could feel it shifting towards his brain and soul.
The first occasion on which this process occurred was when he felt a needle pierce his brain and inject an unknown substance.
The trial was the ultimate challenge to his survival — a pivotal moment that would determine his fate.
This new change was not only intended to alter the structure of his brain and transcend it to the realm of the superhuman, but also his soul, with the aim of achieving harmony between body, mind and soul.
This new procedure set off a reaction in the Emperor's psychic energy.
Although he had managed to contain it until now, the injection had triggered a change in the nature of this psychic force, amplifying its power and breaking through his defences.
No longer contained, it spread instantly throughout his body and invaded his soul.
This was the moment of truth.
He was on the verge of becoming what he had sworn never to be: he was about to lose ownership of his soul.
He was about to undergo a psychic transformation that would enslave him, controlling his choices and emotions.
He would be forced to live in servitude to his master: the Emperor of Mankind.
At that precise moment, when his life was about to change forever, he found the answer to his salvation.
The sanctity of his soul had just been breached, and it was on the verge of being altered, when a power emerged from within, reacting to this existential threat and resisting this alien force in a last-ditch effort.
The two powers clashed.
When this collision happened time seemed to stop.
The clash of the two psychic energy resulted in the solution he needed: an Enlightenment.
Time seemed to stop as he bared witness to profond mysteries and metaphysical truth.
He witnessed the birth of the universe.
One moment there was only darkness, and the next there was an explosion of light, space expanding and life being created.
'Let there be light,' he said, 'and there was light.'
He saw the truth of the Immaterium and understood its nature.
This force was intrinsic to the genesis of the universe because, as he was aware, darkness cannot exist without light.
The symbiotic nature of those two opposing forces, perfectly balanced as all things should be, was the very nature reality.
Its fabric, the very construction of his being, who he was and how he was connected to the warp.
There had always been a light inside him. He was vaguely aware of it, but it had been overshadowed by the light of the Emperor and the darkness of the Warp.
Only when his soul was on the verge of extinction did it shine so brightly.
His psychic light, the fire of his existence.
His very being burning ever so brightly in the face of his own darkness.
This force coming from the depth of his soul was everything he ever needed, a confirmation of his being.
An unextinguishable light, born from an enlightenment of self, ready to be nurtured and cultivated, guiding him in the path of his survival.
The moment he had this epiphany, his soul transformed into a metaphysical flame of life, burning away any alien forces that tried to contaminate its purity.
All the foreign psychic energy that he had accumulated over the years was burned away.
This energy was transformed into a form of psychic nutrient that greatly strengthened his soul.
Furthermore, it burned away the remnants of alien psychic energy that he had failed to detect and which had seeped into his body.
It did not stop there, as his soul proceeded to remodel his physical form, altering and moulding it into a superior state of being.
All those years, his body had lacked the key component of its augmentation procedure: genes encoded with the path to transformation, but lacking the most important element.
However, his enlightenment had brought just that, as the psychic power emanating from the fire of his soul washed over his body, providing him with the instinctive knowledge necessary to complete his transformation and transcend his mortal form.
What was once just a shadow of a body, a mere imitation, an illusion conjured by his biomancy morphed into the form of his fellow candidates.
It was becoming real. He could feel himself growing, not through artificial gene alteration, but through a true evolution of his being. The very nature and foundation of his species were changing.
From this moment on, the foreign substance injected into him would be transformed into nutrients of biomatter, thereby strengthening his physical and psychic abilities.
Surprisingly, his physical form had grown to exceed the standard height of a Custodes, and he now had to use his biomancy to make himself smaller, which he found ironic.
For five years after his enlightenment, he had received a daily dose of nutrients until they finally reached a state of saturation, so he felt no disappointment when they stopped one day.
However, it should be noted that during the last of his augmentation procedure, he had been injected with something potent enough that it had a beneficial effect on him, despite the fact that it had been almost a year since he had reached a level of saturation.
The level of psychic energy mixed into the substance injected into him was the highest it had ever been — probably the final push for a full transformation into a Custodes.
Not that he could know, since he was so far from normality but it was a nice surprise, like a parting gift.
However, as the fire of his soul burned and refined this psychic force, nourishing and strengthening his own, he felt an immense consciousness wash over him.
The Emperor's gaze was upon on him and he was furious at having his psychic energy not only rejected, but also used.
The Emperor's consciousness demanded submission.
It commanded him to open his soul, allowing the Emperor to imprint it, or face annihilation.
However, he resisted, communicating with the Emperor psychically to explain his reasons and goals. The Emperor accepted his vision and agreed with his philosophy:
"I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul."
