Chapter 11:

...

-March 10th, 1996

Arriving in Canada was an entirely new experience for Adam.

While he had been on planes many times before, this trip felt different.

Maybe it was the fact that he wasn't traveling with his whole family or his father...

Or maybe it was just because this time, he was doing something quite important and incredible.... acting as the lead in a movie and traveling to continue filming.

Yup, It felt like something out of a movie, except this time, it was his life. So yes, everything about this trip made him feel special and thrilled with how things were going.

When they landed in Canada, they were greeted at the airport by a man holding a sign with Adam's name on it.

And Yeah, seeing his name written there in bold, clear letters gave Adam a strange mix of excitement and pride.

Heh... For a moment, he felt like a real movie star.

"Look at that, Mr. Big Actor," Andrew, his brother and assigned tutor, teased with a smirk, nudging Adam playfully.

Adam rolled his eyes but couldn't stop himself from smiling a little. It was exciting, though he didn't want Andrew to know just how much it meant to him. Andrew clearly enjoyed using moments like these to tease or embarrass him.

The man holding the sign turned out to be their driver, a middle-aged man with gray hair and a kind smile. After a quick greeting, he took Adam and Andrew's luggage and drove them to a large, cozy lodge that the production team had fully rented out for the actors and crew during filming.

The lodge was just a short drive from the main filming locations. It had a rustic, warm feel with wooden walls, high ceilings, and fireplaces scattered throughout the common areas. While it wasn't luxurious, it was comfortable and practical.... perfect for the crew, who needed a functional space close to the set.

Unlike in New Jersey, where Adam had the chance to go home after each day of filming, he would be far from home for the duration of their stay in Canada. That feeling of being away was exciting but also just a little intimidating.

"Well, looks like we'll be here for a while," Andrew commented as he looked around their shared room. "Not bad. I'd even say it's better than our old basement back home."

Adam shrugged, setting his suitcase down by the bed.

"It's decent. But it doesn't have my comic book collection, so I'm not sure it's better"

Andrew laughed and threw a pillow at him.

"Come on, movie star. You'll be having so much fun acting that you won't even miss your comics"

Even though Andrew was joking, Adam couldn't help but reflect on how much his life had changed in such a short time. Just over two months ago, when he turned nine on January 1st, he was just another kid from New Jersey with nothing particularly exciting to talk about other than having a fully British family. Now, not only was he the lead in a movie, but he was also living a double life as Draco Malfoy in the magical world. And as strange as it was, living two completely different lives was way more fun than he'd ever imagined.

....

That afternoon, Adam met with the production team and the director, Norman Jewison, for a brief discussion about the filming schedule. The director explained that they had initially planned to finish the movie in about three months since the number of hours Adam could legally work each day was strictly regulated due to his age. On top of that, he would need to continue his schooling under the supervision of a tutor during production, as required by child labor laws.

However, Adam's speed and the quality of his work in New Jersey had far exceeded expectations.

The director was confident they could wrap up filming much earlier if they maintained the same pace in Canada.

"Adam, if you work here as well as you did in New Jersey, we'll have this movie finished in under a month. And believe me, that would be nothing short of a miracle in this business," Norman said with a smile. They'd already spent just a month in New Jersey when it was planned al least for a month and a half and now if everything turned out the same or better than before, they could finish shooting before the end of this month.

Adam nodded, trying not to look too embarrassed by the director's praise.

"Er, um… I'll do my best, Mr. Jewison," he replied calmly.

"That's all we need," the director said warmly, giving him a reassuring pat on the shoulder.

Andrew, sitting at the back of the room, watched the exchange with a small smile. While he loved teasing his little brother, he couldn't help but feel proud of how well Adam was handling everything. At nine years old, Andrew had been far more interested in playing outside with his friends than even thinking about something like acting.

....

To Adam's surprise, his first day in Canada didn't involve any filming.

The crew used the time to settle in, organize the locations, and allow the actors to familiarize themselves with their new surroundings.

Adam took the opportunity to explore the lodge and its surroundings. Behind the lodge was a small forest that looked like something out of a winter postcard, with snow-covered trees and crisp, clean air that made him feel as though he were stepping into another world.

'Umm well, that would make it the third world if I count the magical one,' he thought to himself, amused.

Andrew accompanied him for part of the day but spent most of his time working on his laptop.

"You know, if you keep staring at that thing, you're going to turn into a robot," Adam teased as they passed through the lodge's main hall, where Andrew was furiously typing away. He hadn't yet gotten the chance to use a computer, partly because they were quite expensive and partly because they seemed pretty dull and difficult to use.

"And if you keep bugging me, you're going to end up in the forest without your coat," Andrew shot back without looking up from his screen, though with a playful smile.

Adam laughed but knew his brother was more than capable of following through, so he quickly walked away. Yuo, he wasn't about to start a fight he knew he couldn't win.

And though Andrew could be annoying, Adam appreciated having him around. Being so far from home felt less intimidating and lonely with someone familiar by his side. Already he always had to spend a whole day in the wizarding world being Draco without having any of his own family as to have to be in the real world without them as well.

.....

That night, Adam went to bed early.

He knew the next day would be long, and he'd need all the energy he could muster to do his best. But first, he'd have to spend time in the magical world, dealing with several bothersome situations that would also require plenty of energy.

Since he had started traveling there as Draco Malfoy, Adam felt there was so much to learn and explore.

Yeah, the magical world was vast, complex, and utterly fascinating, and every time he returned to the normal world, he couldn't help but miss it a little. But sadly, not everything in the magical world was enjoyable.

He thought back to the recent conversation he'd had with his "father" about a possible marriage contract.

The idea that his life as Draco could be so controlled by Malfoy traditions and expectations seemed absurd, but he also understood it was part of living in that world. For now, he'd tolerate it... at least until he had more options.

"Well, tomorrow is definitely going to be a long day… a very long day. Better get some rest," he murmured to himself as he turned off the light.

...…

...…

-Malfoy Manor, Wiltshire, England

-March 10th, 1990

Today, Adam continued his usual routine of reading about all sorts of fascinating things. To Lucius and Narcissa, this was "studying," but to him, it was learning about incredible magical wonders, so no, he could never call it studying.

The sound of a house-elf echoed after three knocks on the door.

"Young Master Draco, the Parkinson family has arrived, and the master requests your presence"

"Alright, I'll be there as soon as I change," Adam responded lightly, slowly closing the thick book he had been reading. He swapped out his comfortable pajamas for more formal yet still relatively comfortable clothes.

Just as he was about to step into the hallway, Narcissa entered his room.

"Oh, Draco, what are you wearing?" Narcissa's face pinched in disapproval.

"This is comfortable, Mother," he replied, putting on a pleading look. Recently, he had been trying to change the type of clothes he usually wore, but it hadn't gone well. She always made him change again... it was pure torture.

Adam was beyond tired of wearing those stiff, overly extravagant outfits.

He shot a disgusted and annoyed glance at most of the clothes in his ridiculously large wardrobe. Everything was excessively restrictive, but at least these black clothes he had found were far better than the rest of what was in there. And they were perfectly acceptable!

Granted, they weren't as luxurious and ostentatious as the rest of his wardrobe, but they were still of excellent quality. Well, nothing in Malfoy Manor was of poor quality or cheap…

"Draco," Narcissa warned, "you know how important these dinners are to your father"

"Yes," he replied sarcastically, already fed up with her endless speeches, "he needs to show off and try to outdo everyone else."

Okay, maybe he shouldn't have said that. But having his day ruined by remembering yesterday's conversation with Lucius about the possibility of an arranged marriage was affecting him more than he realized. He didn't want to end up married to just anyone.... and at his age! His parents, the real ones as Adam, would never have allowed it.

Besides, having to endure these gatherings where everyone, including the children, talked about the dullest topics imaginable didn't help. He had enough just listening to Lucius and Narcissa lecture him about how nobles like them shouldn't associate with Muggles or Muggle-borns… and all the other blah-blah-blah about preserving the family's good name.

Narcissa raised an eyebrow.

"Your father wouldn't want to hear you talking like that. Neither would I"

Adam slumped, already irritated by how his day was going. There were few times he preferred the normal world to the magical one, and this was definitely one of those times. In fact, he'd rather be anywhere but here.

"I hate these," he muttered, glancing doubtfully at his wardrobe once more.

Adam had already been subjected to a few of these so-called "friendly gatherings," and while they were incredibly dull and formal, with obvious financial motives behind them, he had managed to tolerate them... up until now.

Narcissa shook her head.

"As bothersome as they may be," she said gently, giving Draco a knowing look as she smiled, "they provide opportunities to make connections"

"Draco, you might not understand their value now, but you'll see how useful they can be in the future. You're the heir to our family, my dear, and you must act the part. Think of it this way—when you go to Hogwarts or Durmstrang next year, it'll be helpful to know people your age"

'Yeah, spoiled and arrogant brats I'd rather keep miles away,' Adam thought, rolling his eyes. So far, he hadn't met a single kid close to his age in Lucius's circle who was even remotely tolerable. Honestly, he'd rather put up with his annoying brother for days than spend even a few minutes with those obnoxious kids. Regarding Hogwarts or Durmstrang, he already knew full well that he was going to Hogwarts no matter what, there was no debate. If he had to go to a wizarding school with just all the pesky pureblood wizarding children he might explode even if he had the system abilities to endure it.

She frowned at Draco's reaction.

"You know, you may look just like your father, but you remind me so much of one of my cousins. He also hated mingling with most of the children our grandparents introduced him to," she said, catching Adam's interest.

"Huh? Your cousins? Which one?" he asked, suddenly curious to learn more about the Blacks or the Rosiers. His mother rarely spoke about them, as things hadn't ended well for either family. Most of them were either still in Azkaban or long dead.

For a moment, Narcissa seemed to regret saying anything. Her expression soured slightly when she heard his question.

She hesitated but eventually sighed, giving in to his pleading puppy-dog look. That expression worked wonders, even on someone as poised as Narcissa Malfoy.

So she told him more than he already knew about the Black family, including details about Sirius Black, the last heir of the Black family, who was currently in Azkaban.

Apparently, Sirius was the black sheep of the family, yeah black sheep black family heh....

Anyway, Sirius had never gotten along with the heirs of other pure-blood families the Blacks were connected to. Worse still, according to Narcissa, he had rejected the values that all pure-bloods should hold dear... something she made very clear she wouldn't tolerate Draco doing.

Adam had to admit, just hearing about this man made him like Sirius Black already. He seemed amazing, standing up to his entire family and their beliefs, completely alone at first.

Unaware of her son's admiration, Narcissa continued her tale, highlighting everything she thought was terrible about Sirius... likely in an attempt to prevent Draco from following in his footsteps.

Little did she know, Adam was listening with stars in his eyes. Well... If the past Draco had still been in control, he'd probably be horrified at the mere idea of resembling Sirius Black. But in this respect, Adam was glad to be nothing like the original Draco Malfoy.

The most entertaining parts of the story, for Adam, were the ones Narcissa found the most disgraceful.... like how Sirius had permanently charmed Gryffindor banners onto his bedroom walls, along with photos of Muggle girls in bikinis and motorcycles, just to annoy his parents and grandparents.

"Well, that's enough of that for now. Just remember to behave and strive not to end up like him, alright? Now, how about we pick out something more appropriate for the occasion?" she said, pulling out an outfit that was, of course, much more luxurious.... and therefore, much more uncomfortable.

Adam thought about resisting again, but after she'd indulged him by sharing so many entertaining stories, he decided to cut her some slack. He'd endure this torture one more time.

"Fine, I'll wear it, Mother," Adam grumbled, reluctantly touching the silky fabric. 'Even though it's ridiculously restrictive'

"That's my boy," she said with satisfaction. "I promise you can wear whatever you like tomorrow. It's just for today."

'Sure… today and every other time Lucius invites someone over for business and leaves me stuck dealing with their kids,' Adam thought bitterly but kept it to himself.
