Chapter 23 Arguments and Schemes

In the following of Flame Princess's imprisonment in the lantern, the spirit of Flame Queen tried to visit, her daughter and her husband in their dreams, however when she tried to enter them a force would repeal her away from them. Flame Queen went to the Underworld and spoke to Death about the matter.

"It appears someone or something is using dark magic to keep you from entering your loved ones dreams." Said Death.

"I better tell Marceline about this." Said Flame Queen as she flew off.

"Good luck." Said Death as went back to work on the gardens.

Flame Queen flew back to Ooo and went to the Ice Kingdom, she found Marceline and explained what happened. Marceline then told Simon what Flame Queen told her.

"This is all to much of a coincidence. Someone is behind this and we're going to get to the bottom of this." Said Simon as he cast Flame Shield on himself and Marceline.

The two of them flew towards the Fire Kingdom to speak with Fire King, but as they reached the kingdom they saw that there were hundreds of guards on the wall. One of the guards demanded the two travelers to stop and state their business.

"I am Simon, ruler of the Ice Kingdom and this is Marceline Queen of the Vampires. We seek an audience with the Flame King to discuss an important issue regarding Flame Princess." Said Simon.

A solider, who seemed to be in charge stepped forward.

"The King has specifically told us that the ones know as Simon and Marceline are not allowed in the kingdom." Said the guard.

"That's whack!" Complained Marceline angrily.

"Sir please were trying to help, we believe that something terrible is happening all around Ooo and we desperately need to speak with the king." Said Simon trying to reason with the guards.

"You will do no such thing. Our king order us to keep you out and if you try to get in we will burn you to ashes." Said the guard as flames appeared on his and several of the guards hands.

Simon and Marceline eyed the huge number of guard, they realized they couldn't take them on or sneak into the Fire Kingdom. They reluctantly flew away back towards the Ice Kingdom. From the shadows of a building Crimson watched the wizard and vampire fly away. The evil being had gone to great lengths to make sure that Simon and Marceline wouldn't get into the Fire Kingdom and free Flame Princess, he had also cast a spell over the kingdom to keep spirits from entering the Flame People's dreams.

Crimson had given Flame King a special potion that increased his pride and vanity. This potion also allowed Crimson to influence Flame King a little. Crimson told Flame King to keep Simon and Marceline out of the kingdom by any means necessary. As an added bonus Crimson recruited two new members to the organization. The first was a Fire Elemental assassin in bandages named Scorcher. The second was a powerful Fire Elemental with wizard skills named Don John.

"Now the the Fire Kingdom is secure, I have some other matters to attend to." Said Crimson as he teleported away from the Fire Kingdom.

In the Ice Kingdom, Marceline was furious.

"I can't believe this! First Bonnie comes all high and mighty and has Phoebe locked up and hands her over to her father. Now the Flame King doesn't want us setting foot in his kingdom and the spirit of Flame Queen can't visit the dreams of either her husband or her daughter. This is so messed up and it's driving me nuts!" Shouted Marceline.

"I agree. Some unknown force is at work here. First someone attacks Phoebe and removes her pendent making her lose control and now Flame King is acting strange." Said Simon.

"First...I lose my mom...then Betty, and now my little sister is being locked away...for simply having a lot of power. Why...dose this keep happening? I get attached to someone...and they get taken away." Said Marceline as a few tears fell from her eyes.

Simon walked over to Marceline and wrapped his arms around her.

"It's alright Marceline. I'm still here and I promise nothing bad will happen. Your mom and Betty are watching over you and I promise I will do everything in my power to get Phoebe back." Said Simon.

Marceline just hugged Simon deeply.

The next day Simon went to speak with Bubblegum. The two rulers met in the dining room.

"Hello Simon." Greeted Bubblegum.

"Hello Bubblegum." Greeted Simon.

"What have you come to speak about?" Asked Marceline.

"I've come to discuss the situation with Flame Princess and some concerns about the Fire Kingdom." Said Simon.

"The Fire Kingdom is always a concern. The people there are evil and they simply wish to conquer and destroy everything. The kingdoms of Ooo have to constantly be on guard against them incase they try to invade." Said Bubblegum.

"Princesses, I have to disagree with your opinion. I've had a few encounters with some pretty evil creatures in my time, believe me. However I don't think the people of the Fire Kingdom are as evil as they claim to be. I've had some dealings with them and they never have struck me as truly evil." Said Simon.

"Explain yourself?" Asked Bubblegum raising an eyebrow.

"Very well. My first encounter with the Flame People was rough. The Flame King, along with his wife, and several guards showed at my kingdom. The Flame King wished to fight me in combat and take my kingdom. We battled for a while, but Flame Queen stopped the fight and asked me not to harm her husband. I agreed. Flame King acknowledged me as a worthy opponent and that I earned his respect. Months later Flame Queen came to visit me asking for advice. She told me the first Flame King's philosophy that because the Flame People were destructive that they were evil. Flame Queen explained how the Fire People are filled with anger from not being able to touch or experience other things because of their fiery nature. I then told her that fire was indeed destructive, but not necessarily evil. I then told her that I would make a magical item that would allow a Flame Person to touch and feel other things without the risk of burning things and that once I had one made I would make more magical items for every person living in the Fire Kingdom." Said Simon.

"So you gained both the respect of the King and Queen?" Asked Bubblegum.

"Indeed I did. Later the Phoebe was left in my care by Flame King. The Flame King was incredibly sad, but he wanted to protect his daughter and make sure she grew up happy and safe. I put the magical item I created on Phoebe and I raised her as my own, with help from Marceline. During that time Flame King visited me on a few occasions to ask how his daughter was. I told her she was doing good and he thanked me for what I was doing." Said Simon.

"You still haven't explained to me why you believe the Fire Kingdom isn't evil." Said Bubblegum.

"Very well. I have learned that the people of the Fire Kingdom are alive just like everybody else in Ooo. They care deeply for one another and they can show respect for other living beings. They can be prideful and violent at times, but they've kept to themselves and they really haven't made any real big attempt to conquer any of the other kingdoms. They were misguided by their first King's philosophy, but I think if they were to experience something other then burning the things outside their kingdom they would change their ways." Said Simon.

"Tell me about Phoebe." Said Bubblegum.

"She is a good kid and she would never harm another living creature, unless in self defense. During the festival a cloaked figure and a cat removed the pendent she wore and caused her to have some kind of panic attack making her lose control of her powers. Someone was deliberately trying to use Phoebe to destroy the Candy Kingdom. Marceline and I managed to stop that from happening, however I think whoever was behind the attack had another plan incase the attack failed. After Phoebe was locked into the lantern and taken to the Fire Kingdom, Marceline and I tried to enter the Fire Kingdom, but were stopped by a bunch of guards, who told us that we were not allowed to set foot into the kingdom, by order of the Flame King." Said Simon.

"So the incident with Phoebe at the festival was orchestrated be a mysterious figure, but there was another plan incase the first one failed. Now the Fire King is acting strange and has decreed that you and Marceline are not allowed to set foot in the Fire Kingdom." Said Bubblegum.

"I know it sounds crazy and I don't have any solid proof yet, but these events seem to much of a coincidence. The Flame King and I shared respect and trust for one another, but now he doesn't want me to set foot into his kingdom. I having a feeling that someone wants to keep Phoebe captive and away from me and Marceline." Said Simon.

"Well I'll admit this is interesting. What do you want me to do?" Said Bubblegum.

"I wish for your help to free Phoebe, she is innocent and I have a bad feeling that there is some kind of unknown force working in the shadows and planning something horrible for all of Ooo. " Said Simon.

"Simon I can not allow Flame Princess to roam free, you saw the power she was capable of. If she losses control again then all of Ooo and perhaps even the whole world would be in danger. I understand, your concerns, but it's for the best that Flame Princess stays in lantern at the Fire Kingdom. The figure who attacked Phoebe was probably some kind of thief, who though the pendent was some kind of valuable treasure. As for the Flame King acting strange, it's probably normal or he doesn't trust you and Marceline anymore. There is no big conspiracy going on." Said Bubblegum.

Simon just starred at Bubblegum. Then he spoke.

"Princess I can understand your concern about Phoebe, but locking her up in a lantern was a bad idea. She is a living being and she is innocent. She poses no threat to the world. As for the thief that attacked Phoebe, he exhibited a powerful level of magic and he seemed to be watching the incident like a spectator, when Marceline and me encountered him. He knew what would happen if the pendent was removed from Phoebe and he provoked some kind of panic attack. The Fire Kingdom is on lockdown and the Flame King is acting strange. Princess I know your a intelligent being of reason and I see you as a friend. As a father and a guardian of Ooo I beg you to reconsider the treatment of Phoebe and look into the strange behavior of Fire King." Said Simon as he starred Bubblegum.

"Simon I can understand your concern for Phoebe, but all of Ooo would be in danger if she was allowed to roam free. She's back in the Fire Kingdom where she belongs under the watchful eye of her father. As for this conspiracy, you can put your mind to ease. I have several resources spread out all over that keep a good eye on everything. If there was any kind of evil conspiracy going on by a powerful magic user in Ooo, my sources would have heard of it." Said Bubblegum.

Simon just looked at Bubblegum with a little annoyance.

"You can be so smart yet so blind at times. You judged a living being for one incident and because of her heritage. You doubt the word of a friend and don't take his concern seriously." Said Simon as he starred Bubblegum down.

"This discussion is over." Said Bubblegum as she returned the stare.

"Very well, I suppose it was a pointless talking to a bad parent." Said Simon as he got up to leave.

"I'm a good ruler and parent to my people." Said Bubblegum as she felt herself go mad with anger.

"I was referring to your yellow heir Lemongrab. You made him and when he didn't turn out the way you wanted, you had him sent faraway, so you wouldn't have to look at him or put up with him. You didn't even try to raise him or teach him. You took the easy way out Bubblegum. Instead of trying to teach him or care for him or try to understand him, you just simply threw him away as if he was nothing. Bubblegum if, you had taken the time to actually meet Phoebe and understand her, you would realize she wasn't a threat and that you would have come up with a better solution then the lantern and having her sent to the Fire Kingdom." Said Simon.

"I did what I had to do to protect all of Ooo." Said Bubblegum defensively.

The topic of Lemongrab was a real touchy subject for her.

"To protect Ooo from a child who didn't mean to harm anyone. Bubblegum I still consider you a friend, but I have to say you made a horrible mistake. Good day." Said Simon as he left the dinning room.

Bubblegum just looked down at the floor for a few minutes. Then she stood up and walked down a hallway towards a room, she entered the room. The room was huge, with one giant wall with hundreds of TV monitors each showing a different scene of all the various places in Ooo. Bubblegum sat in a chair and looked at the screens. They were her resources and they kept her informed of what was going on.

Bubblegum starred at one image that showed the throne room of the Fire Kingdom. Phoebe was hunched in a ball in the lantern looking sad and depressed, while her father sat in his throne. Bubblegum starred at the sad little girl.

Was she truly doing the right thing?

At that moment Peppermint Butler showed up in the room with a cup of tea.

"Thank you." Said Bubblegum as she took the cup.

"I take it from your expression that the meeting with Simon didn't go alright?" Asked Peppermint Butler.

"No, we kind of had a disagreement and it really made me question what I'm doing. Was locking Flame Princess up really the best option? I mean she's incredibly powerful, but she's just a kid. I'm trying to do what's best for Ooo and keep everyone safe, but are my decisions really the right ones?" Said Bubblegum.

"Princess don't doubt yourself, though you had a disagreement with Simon and Marceline that doesn't mean you didn't have their best interest at heart. The Flame Princess needs to be with her own kind, it's where she belongs and her energy needs to be contained. Honestly Princess you shouldn't let this bother you. Think of all the good you've done for all of Ooo. There is no one more qualified then you to keep the Candy Kingdom and all of Ooo safe." Said Peppermint Butler.

"Thank you Peppermint Butler, that really makes me feel better." Said Bubblegum with a small smile.

"Anything for you Princess." Said Peppermint Butler with a smile as he left the room.

Out in the hallway an evil grin spread across Peppermint Butler's face.

"Oh how easy you are to manipulate Princess! You only see what me and the organization want you to see, soon we will use your insecurities for our purposes to eliminate all threats and cause a little genocide!" Chuckled Peppermint Butler as his voice changed and he vanished in a red flash.

In the control room Bubblegum starred at one monitor that showed Lemongrab at his castle having an argument with his shadow. Bubblegum sighed. Perhaps Simon was right about her being a bad parent. Bubblegum then turned her attention to another monitor that showed a yellow bulldog and a young boy in a blue shirt, blue pants, and a bear hat playing in the grasslands. The boy had a wooden sword and was swinging it around laughing. The bulldog stretched his body around laughing and throwing punches in the air.

"Adventure Time!" Cheered the boy.

Bubblegum couldn't help but smile at the little boy's enthusiasm. Bubblegum studied the boy and realized he was human. This was certainly unexpected. Bubblegum thought humans were extinct, but apparently there was one still around. Very interesting.

The bulldog was Jake and the human was Finn. Little did the Bubblegum know that both would become her friends and they would be heroes of Ooo.

In the lair Peppermint Butler appeared in a private office. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a tiny red and white mask that expanded and went over his face. His bow tie, then expanded into a red cloak that covered his body.

"Ah much better." Said Crimson as he dropped the voice he used as his butler disguise.

Crimson walked out of the office. Me-Mow appeared and jumped onto his shoulders. The two of them made their way to a large monitoring room, where Sylvester sat in front of a bunch of monitors that showed him all of Ooo. One monitor showed Finn and Jake.

"Nothing really new to report, but I did find out there there is a human boy living in Ooo." Said Sylvester.

"Interesting. I thought humans were extinct, oh will he shouldn't pose any threat. Where are our other members?" Said Crimson.

"Well Maja is looking to gather more magic and magical items for her project, she found a strange gold tiara she claims has a ton of magic, but she can't get it to work, she also says she's very close in locating the Sleeper." Said Sylvester.

"What of the Vampire King?" Asked Crimson.

"Alister has gone to rest at his manor, he said he was getting board." Said Sylvester.

"And where are our two newest members and our young Prince?" Asked Crimson.

"They should be returning from their training real soon." Said Sylvester.

At that moment Pyro walked in wearing a sun pendent, a red sleeveless shirt, shorts, and tennis shoes. The young Flame Prince had a towel hanging from his shoulders and sweat dripping from his brow. Behind him were Scorcher and Don John.

Scorcher was tall with dark red skin, he wore a loincloth, a head wrap, and bandages on his legs, feet, and wrist.

Don John was big, he wore a huge red coat that covers his body. He had long, red- and purple-striped horns on his head. He wore a mask that had a dark-purple face and yellow eyes with red slit pupils on them, with yellow lips and a red slit mouth. He had fire on his shoulders and hands and a black belt with a flaming buckle, and two muscular dark purple legs.

"How goes the training?" Asked Crimson.

"The Princess preformed excellently, his power grows stronger by the day." Said Don John.

"When do I get to my own kingdom?" Asked Flame Prince as he looked at Crimson.

"Patience Pyro. You'll get your kingdom, when your older, you still have a lot to learn." Said Crimson.

"But I'm board!" Complained Flame Prince.

"Don't worry, will give you something fun to do real soon." Said Crimson.

A big grin appeared on Flame Prince's face as he walked out of the room. Crimson turned to Sylvester.

"How's the work on those two mutant experiments we found at that military base coming along?" Asked Crimson.

"The memory replacement is a little tricky. According to the video files I found the scientist intended to use the mutants as relief workers for war and hurricane victims. The scientist didn't want them used for war so they put them into suspended animation and locked them deep in the lab. I'm currently trying to replace their old memories with memories of them be creatures of war, but it'll take me some time." Said Sylvester.

"Very well keep it up. The master will destroy the Candy Kingdom when the times comes and when Pyro is older he will take over the Fire Kingdom and become the new Flame King. Once the two strongest kingdoms are out of the way the ret of Ooo will follow. After the master's goal for universal conquest shall begin." Said Crimson.

"What about Simon the Ice Wizard?" Asked Me-Mow.

"He will be dealt with along, with anybody who stands in our way." Said Crimson with a smile.

At the Ice Kingdom, Simon had just told Marceline about the meeting, he had Bubblegum. Marceline was furious.

"That stubborn stupid ball of gum! She always thinks she right and that her way is best, well it's not! Her ideas are dumb!" Shouted Marceline as she hovered around the living room. "I'm going to sneak into the Fire Kingdom and check on Phoebe. Maybe I can bust her out." She said as she floated towards a window.

"Marceline please be careful. I can't stand the thought of you or Phoebe being hurt." Said Simon as he followed Marceline.

"Don't worry Simon, the Fire people won't even know I'm there. I have some awesome stealth powers." Said Marceline as she went invisible and then visible before Simon's eyes.

"Alright. Let me cast Flame Shield on you first." Said Simon as he cast Flame Shield on Marceline. "Also take this to Phoebe." He said as he handed Marceline a photo of himself, Marceline, and Phoebe.

"I will." Said Marceline as she went invisible and flew off.

"Be careful my daughter and I hope your sister is ok." Said Simon as he went to go clean his lab out.

At the Fire Kingdom, Phoebe was dressed in a red dress sitting in the lantern. The young fire elemental looked down at her father, who sat in his throne. Phoebe had only spoken to her father a few times since she had arrived at the Fire Kingdom.

"Are you really my father?" Asked Phoebe when they arrived.

"I am." Said Flame King.

"Why was I living with Simon and Marceline, instead of here?" Asked Phoebe.

"Things were dangerous here when you were born. I sent you away to live with Simon and Marceline to keep you safe. But now things have calmed down and you can live here peacefully and we can be a family." Said Flame King with a little smile.

"Where's my mom?" Asked Phoebe.

"She...died a few days after you were born, things went crazy and I wasn't ready to raise you, but now we can start being a family." Said Flame King.

"Why am I in this lantern?" Asked Phoebe.

"It's for your own protection. Princess Bubblegum of the Candy Kingdom told me that the lantern would keep you safe." Said Flame King.

"When can I get out?" Asked Phoebe.

"When your older, maybe sooner if I find you a nice evil boy of royalty to date and protect you." Said Flame King.

"Why evil?" Asked Phoebe.

"Because we are evil my dear. We're fire and we destroy whatever we touch. That's our nature." Said Flame King.

Phoebe looked confused, she never thought of herself as evil and the only time she destroyed anything was during her training with Simon and Marceline, but that was only to hone her powers.

"Can Simon and Marceline come visit?" Asked Phoebe.

"No they are not allowed in the kingdom. They are not of our race and I forbid you from ever seeing them agin!" Declared the Flame King.

A few tears appeared in Phoebe's eyes and that made Flame King feel guilty. He quickly thought of a song to sing to his daughter and calm her down.

There was a time before, when we were still...

Afraid of the dark

Then came the first spark, a fiery birth...

It totally rocked

Sentinels crashing down, out of the blue...

Creating a kingdom of red hue

Now there's only few...

These sleeping Gods have tremendous power...

Can cause a new kingdom to flower...

So burn as bright as the Sun

My fiery one

If light starts to dim

Awaken again

The slumbering ones

Phoebe starred at her father with wonder.

"What was that song?" Asked Phoebe.

"It is the most ancient and scared song of our people. It's called 'A Kingdom from a Spark'." Explained Flame King.

"I liked it." Said Phoebe with a smile.

Flame King smiled back.

Phoebe sat in the lantern board and sad. The she heard a tiny tap on the lantern followed by a voice.

"Phoebe, it's me Marceline." Said a voice.

"Marcy where are you?" Asked Phoebe looking around.

"I'm invisible and I'm going to see if I can bust you out." Said Marceline.

Marceline tapped the glass with her invisible fist. The lantern looked a whole lot stronger then it looked. Marceline could probably break it in her full giant bat form, but she would have to become visible to do that and the Flame King and the guards would see her. Plus the noise of smashing the lantern would attract the everybody's attention. Marceline cursed Bubblegum for making a strong prison for Phoebe.

"I got nothing right now Phoebe." Admitted Marceline.

"That's ok. Can we talk a little?" Asked Flame Phoebe.

"Of course." Said Marceline.

"Am I'm in this lantern for something I did?" Asked Phoebe.

"No, you did nothing wrong Phoebe. A stuck up Princess is the one who threw you in here." Said Marceline.

"Well that's a relief. But why did the Princess have me locked up?" Said Phoebe.

"Because she's a dweeb, who thinks she's so smart. She thought you were dangerous, so she got all crazy and had you locked up. If you asked me she should be the one locked up for being crazy." Said Marceline.

Phoebe giggled a little.

"Hey before I forget, Simon asked me to give this to you." Said Marceline as she reached into her pocket and pulled out the picture Simon gave her.

The picture had a fire protection spell on it so it didn't burn. The picture was visible as Marceline slipped it through the top of the lantern. Phoebe caught the picture and looked at it.

"Just a little something to remember us by. You'll always have people who care about you." Said Marceline.

"Thanks sis." Said Phoebe with a smile.

"Don't ever lose hope sis. I promise you, you won't be in that lantern forever." Said Marceline.

"I won't. Just promise me you'll come visit me now and then." Said Phoebe.

"I will." Said Marceline.

"You know this is kind of like one of those stories Simon read to me. I'm a princess waiting to be rescued by a handsome prince or a brave knight. Who knows maybe that'll happen to me." Said Phoebe.

"Maybe it will. Goodbye Phoebe, I'll come visit you soon. Love you." Said Marceline.

"Alright sis. Love you." Said Phoebe.

Marceline flew out of the Fire Kingdom and became visible. Marceline was both happy and sad. She was happy that Phoebe was safe and that she had a chance to speak to her. Marceline was sad because Phoebe was locked up and for the moment Marceline couldn't think of anyway to free her. Maybe Simon could think of something. Marceline flew towards the Ice Kingdom to speak with Simon, but he couldn't think of anything either. Even if they did free Phoebe, her father would come after her and take her back to the Fire Kingdom. It was hard to believe, but there was nothing they could do.

Little did they know that one day Phoebe would kinda of be freed by a brave hero, though not in a way anyone would expect. But that would take place years later.

Until that time came the boy, who would be that hero would go on a few crazy adventures and help defend and shape Ooo.
