Chapter 7: CHAPTER 7: THE VALUE OF LUCK
Kael stood over the defeated monster, his chest heaving with exhaustion. He couldn't believe he had managed to defeat it, despite being vastly outmatched.
As he caught his breath, Kael couldn't help but think about the role luck had played in his victory. If he hadn't spotted that rock, or if the monster hadn't been momentarily stunned, the outcome of the battle might have been very different.
"System, did I really deserve to win that fight?" Kael asked, feeling a sense of doubt.
The system responded, its voice calm and detached. "Luck can play a role in any battle, Kael. But it's how you adapt and respond to situations that truly matters."
Kael nodded, taking the system's words to heart. He knew that he still had a long way to go, but he was determined to become stronger.
As he stood there, Kael realized that the 'Keen Smell' ability he had absorbed was more useful than he thought. However, its rank was quite low, and he wouldn't be able to detect monsters from a distance.
The system notified Kael that his Aether Rank had advanced to F Rank after absorbing the ability. Feeling a sense of accomplishment, Kael decided it was time to head back to Emberlyn.
But as he turned to leave, Kael's luck seemed to run out. He suddenly caught a whiff of something foul, and his 'Keen Smell' ability alerted him to the presence of a monster nearby.
However, due to the low rank of the ability, Kael was only able to smell the monster when it was almost close to him. And when he turned to face it, his heart sank.
The monster was an E Rank beast, its eyes glowing with an otherworldly energy. Kael's eyes widened in fear as he froze, unable to move.
The monster took a step closer, its jaws open wide. Kael knew he was in grave danger, but his legs seemed rooted to the spot.
He tried to remember the battle techniques he had learned, but his mind was a blank. The monster's gaze seemed to paralyze him, and he couldn't think of anything to do.
The monster took another step closer, its hot breath washing over Kael. He knew he had to act fast, or he would be its next meal.
Kael's heart was racing, and his palms were sweating. He knew he had to overcome his fear if he wanted to survive.
With a surge of adrenaline, Kael managed to break free from his paralysis. He turned to run, but his legs felt like lead.
The monster was gaining on him, its claws snapping wildly. Kael knew he couldn't outrun it, not in his current state.
He needed to think fast, or he would be dinner. Kael's eyes scanned the surroundings, looking for anything that could help him.
That's when he saw a nearby tree with a low-hanging branch. Without hesitation, Kael grabbed the branch and swung himself up into the tree.
The monster followed, its claws scrabbling at the bark. Kael climbed higher, his heart pounding in his chest.
He knew he couldn't stay there forever, but for now, it was a safe haven. Kael caught his breath, trying to calm his racing heart.
As he looked down at the monster below, Kael realized that he needed to be more prepared. He couldn't rely on luck alone to survive.
He needed to train harder, learn new techniques, and improve his abilities. Kael made a mental note to focus on his training when he returned to Emberlyn.
For now, he would wait out the monster and then make his way back to safety. Kael settled in, his eyes fixed on the monster below.
