Aether Chronicles: Birth Of A Legend

Chapter 205: You Had Us Worried Sick

Raegar watched as Drusilla giggled at his father. He shook his head before the older man hugged him once again. ''Thanks for coming to help, but you need to head back to Drakenwood,'' the older man said.

''I know,'' he replied. ''I'll head back now, will you be safe out here?''

His father gave a firm nod, his expression resolute. ''Indeed,'' he said, his voice steady with conviction. ''We'll establish a camp here, tend to the wounded, and hold our ground until reinforcements arrive. Our priority is to ensure everyone is cared for and secure.''

With the matter settled, Raegar and Drusilla lingered for a moment, their conversation lightening as they exchanged quiet words, a brief respite from the day's intensity. Soon, they were gently urged to move along by one of the senior guards, who gestured toward the path leading back to the school.

The couple complied, setting off together, their footsteps crunching softly on the gravel trail. As they walked, Raegar rolled his shoulders and stretched his arms, wincing slightly. ''Gods, my back's killing me,'' he muttered under his breath, a faint grin tugging at his lips. ''I'll be out like a snuffed candle tonight, that's for sure.''

Drusilla glanced at him, her eyes glinting, and they continued, the weight of the day easing with each step toward the school. While walking down the road, the air started to change as a blue mist appeared.

Seconds later, the headmistress appeared, looking relieved before speaking. ''Come on, you two, I'll teleport us back to the others who are waiting in the school gardens.''

Raegar gave a subtle nod, signaling his agreement. At his gesture, the Dark Fairy, a faint shimmer of ethereal light, shrank back to her small form. She darted toward him, slipping into the folds of his pocket, her faint glow barely visible through the fabric.

The sight drew a warm, hearty chuckle from the older woman nearby, her eyes crinkling at the Fairy's antics and Raegar's quiet patience. Moments later, a soft hum of magic filled the air, and the world around them seemed to blur.

In an instant, they vanished from the clearing, the familiar scent of pine and earth replaced by the ancient, mossy aroma of Drakenwood. They reappeared in the gardens where Selene, Zahara, and Dominique were waiting.

His eyes caught a fleeting glimpse of Baldur soaring overhead, the owl's wings cutting through the sky. A rustle nearby drew his attention, and he turned to see Yuzuki, her small, fluffy black form quivering.

The moment her bright eyes locked onto him, her tiny head snapped up, and she bounded toward him at surprising speed, her paws barely touching the ground. Raegar chuckled softly, bending down to scoop up the wriggling bundle of fur in his arms.

He cradled her close, his fingers gently ruffling her soft, inky coat as he murmured affectionate words, pampering her with the warmth and attention she craved while he stroked through her soft fur.

Yuzuki responded, a series of delighted chirps and squeaks, her tiny body vibrating as she nuzzled into his chest. The Vampress appeared, her striking features taking his breath away, her dark eyes scanning him for any signs of harm.

Relief softened her expression, her tone low. ''I'm so glad you're safe. No more battles for now, Rae. Take this time to rest and enjoy your days at school. You've earned it.''

Her gaze lingered on him for a moment, a mix of protectiveness and care, before she offered a faint, reassuring smile and stepped back. This allowed Zahara to suddenly hug him with a big smile.

''I'm happy you're back, but like Domi said, don't go off fighting anymore,'' she commented. ''Now let's get something to eat, the headmistress said there's food there for us.''

Raegar nodded. ''I'll calm down and get back to studying before the tournament starts,'' he answered.

Following that, the blonde moved aside as the Demoness approached with a knowing smirk as she teased. ''It's good to have you back with us. But, no more running off to pick fights, alright? You had us worried sick.''

Her tone was playful yet firm, a subtle reminder of the concern they'd all felt during his absence. She paused, her yellow eyes softening as she gestured toward the hall in the distance.

''Come on, let's head to the dining hall. The headmistress mentioned they've prepared a proper feast for us, and I'm starving,'' Selene said.

Raegar gave a slow, affirmative nod, his expression unreadable but his eyes glinting with a hint of gratitude. As they began to move, the Demoness fell into step beside him, her demeanor shifting to one of playful mischief.

A sly smirk curled her lips as she leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. ''You know, Raeg, you're starting to make quite the name for yourself. Just wait until word spreads among the nobles. They'll be trembling in their gilded boots at the mere thought of you.''

Her smirk widened, her eyes sparkling with excitement. ''When they send their assassins, and trust me, they will, we'll be ready. We'll be fighting side by side, cutting through them like a storm through a wheat field. It'll be glorious, won't it?''

Selene's teasing tone was laced with confidence, a promise of camaraderie and shared battles to come, as the group made their way toward the warmth and comfort of the awaiting meal.

The late afternoon sun cast long, golden rays across the path, bathing the sprawling grounds of the school in a warm, amber glow. Raegar walked at the head of the group, his heavy boots thudding rhythmically against the stones, his broad shoulders squared but relaxed.

His return had lifted a weight from his companions, though the air still hummed with unspoken questions about where he'd been. Behind him, Zahara, Dominique, and Selene followed, their laughter echoing through the crisp air.

Zahara, her blonde braid swaying with each purposeful step, adjusted the staff at her hip. ''You're lucky the headmistress is in a generous mood, Rae,'' she said, her tone half-teasing, half-scolding. ''She's laid out a spread fit for royalty in the dining hall. You'd better not vanish again before we get our fill, or I'll track you down myself.''

Her lips quirked into a grin, softening the threat, but the glint in her eyes suggested she meant every word. Raegar glanced over his shoulder, his stoic expression cracking just enough to reveal a faint smirk.

''Noted,'' he rumbled in amusement. ''Though I'd like to see you try.''

Dominique, walking beside Zahara, rolled her eyes dramatically, her blackish green curls bouncing as she tossed her head. ''Oh, please, Rae, don't tempt her,'' she said with mock exasperation. ''Baldur's been insufferable since you left. He wanted to go after you all the time, but the headmistress said it would be too dangerous.''

Raegar chuckled as the owl swooped down and landed on his shoulder before letting out a hoot. The creature entered the portal that the Vampire girl opened so he and Yuzuki could enter.

Following that, Selene quickened her pace to catch up, falling into step beside him. Her yellow eyes sparkled with her usual blend of mischief and warmth as she nudged him with her elbow.

''You've got the nobles in a tizzy, you know. Word's spreading about your little… escapades,'' she commented.

His smirk deepened, but he said nothing, his gaze fixed on the towering silhouette of the dining hall ahead. Its stained-glass windows glimmered in the fading light, promising warmth and the savory aroma of roasted meats and fresh-baked bread.

Raegar shook his head, the barest hint of a chuckle escaping him. ''You lot talk too much,'' he muttered, but there was no bite in his words.

The group's laughter swelled, carrying them forward as they neared the hall's heavy oak doors. Following that, everyone entered the hall only to see the table with the headmistress standing next to it.

Moments later, the warm air brushed against their skin as the candlelight danced across polished oak tables laden with steaming platters of roasted venison, golden-crusted breads, and vibrant arrays of seasonal fruits.

Raegar stood near the entrance. Across from him, the headmistress, an older woman with light blue hair and blue eyes that held centuries of wisdom, offered a rare smile. Her elegant robes shimmered faintly as she gestured toward the bountiful table.

''This,'' she revealed, her tone rich with gratitude. ''iIs our thanks for your efforts against the northern barbarians. Their raid would have tested even the Drakenwood guards' mettle, but you ensured our safety.''

Her smile deepened, a flicker of pride in her gaze as she regarded the warrior before her. Raegar inclined his head, his expression steady but respectful, his dark eyes reflecting the candlelight.

''You're welcome,'' he responded. ''I came here to learn, not to see this place torn apart. Keeping those raiders at bay was in everyone's interest.''

His words carried a quiet conviction, underscoring his commitment to the academy that had become his temporary home. The headmistress nodded, her sharp gaze softening with understanding.
