Chapter 214: What In The Stars
Gritting his teeth, Raegar forced his breathing to slow, willing the Aether to keep circulating despite the agony ripping through his entire being. Raegar's breaths came in shallow, ragged bursts as he fought to maintain control.
The pill's energy coursing through his Wind Pool like a storm trapped in a bottle, making the pain feel like tiny blades were slicing him apart from the inside out. But he clung to Cecilia's words, anchoring himself to her steady presence.
His fingers dug deeper into the moss, the cool earth a faint counterpoint to the fire within. Slowly, he visualized the Aether's flow, coaxing it into a smoother spiral, each rotation drawing the chaotic energy closer to harmony.
The pain didn't lessen, but it began to shift, less a wild assault and more a pulsing rhythm, like a heartbeat syncing with his own. After an unknown amount of time, he came too only to yelp as his body ached.
Raegar heard the soft rustle of papers fill the garden as Cecilia hunched over a table, her brow furrowed in concentration. Stacks of paperwork towered around her, proof of the endless tasks she juggled daily.
The faint glow of the setting sun, casting shadows across her face, highlighted the subtle lines of exhaustion etched into her otherwise warm features. She was lost in her work, her pen scratching furiously against a form.
Raegar stood up, but his legs were weak. His broad shoulders tensed, and his jaw clenched, but his legs betrayed him, wobbling unsteadily. The sound was enough to pull Cecilia fully from her paperwork trance.
Her blue eyes flicked toward him, and for a moment, she simply watched, her pen hovering mid-air. Then, as if a switch had been flipped, a radiant smile broke across her face, chasing away the weariness that had clung to her moments before.
''Well, look at you!'' she exclaimed, her voice bright with a mix of surprise and delight. ''Trying to make a grand escape already, are we?''
Raegar froze, caught off guard by her sudden warmth. He glanced at her, his piercing red eyes meeting hers, and a smirk tugged at the corner of his lips. ''Escape? Nah, just thought I'd stretch my legs,'' he said, his voice low and smooth, carrying that effortless confidence that seemed to follow him everywhere.
He didn't realize the way his words, paired with that half-smile, made Cecilia's breath hitch ever so slightly. ''Didn't mean to distract you from… whatever battle you're waging with that mountain of paper.''
The older woman's smile widened, and she set her pen down, leaning back in her chair to give him her full attention. ''Oh, this?''
She gestured to the pile with a playful wave of her hand. ''Just another day saving the world, one form at a time. But you—''
Cecilia pointed at him, her tone teasing but laced with genuine admiration. ''You're the one who's supposed to be resting, not playing hero just yet.''
Raegar chuckled, a deep, rumbling sound that seemed to fill the garden. He eased himself back onto a nearby chair, his movements careful but still carrying that grace that made it hard for her not to notice.
''Resting's not my style,'' he said, tilting his head slightly as he looked at her. ''Besides, you've been stuck in here playing nurse and secretary all at once. Figured I'd at least give you something interesting to look at.''
The words slipped out so casually, so naturally, that Raegar didn't even register the way they landed. But Cecilia did. Her cheeks flushed a soft pink, and she quickly averted her gaze, pretending to shuffle a stack of papers to hide the sudden warmth creeping up her neck.
''Oh, please,'' she said as she tried to play it off. ''I've got plenty to keep me occupied without your… theatrics.''
But the truth was, Raegar's presence was a distraction, one she wasn't entirely mad about. The way his white hair fell slightly over his brow, the quiet strength in his frame even while injured, and the way his eyes seemed to hold a spark of mischief despite his condition.
It all had a way of pulling her focus from the monotony of her work. And that voice of his, warm and teasing, didn't help matters. She stood abruptly, smoothing her skirt as if to shake off the fluster, and crossed the room to a small cabinet.
''Since you're so eager to move,'' she said, her tone regaining some of its usual composure. ''I suppose you're well enough for the rest of these.''
Raegar reached for the bottle, his hand brushing hers briefly. It was an innocent touch, but it sent a jolt through the older woman, and she quickly pulled her hand back, her blush deepening.
''I, um, I'll be tied up with this paperwork for a while,'' she said, her words tumbling out a bit too fast. ''So, you'll need to handle these on your own. Just… follow my instructions, alright?''
He raised an eyebrow, clearly amused by her sudden rush of words, though he didn't seem to realize he was the cause of it. "Got it, boss," he said, giving her a mock salute that somehow managed to be both playful and charming.
Raegar pocketed the bottle, his gaze lingering on her for a moment longer than he intended. ''You sure you're alright? You're looking a little… red.''
Cecilia's eyes widened, and she turned away, busying herself with straightening an already neat stack of folders. ''I'm fine!'' she said, a touch too quickly. ''Just… warm in here, that's all. Now, behave yourself, and don't go trying to run laps until you're ready.''
She stole one last glance at him, her smile softer now, before diving back into her work, her heart still racing. Raegar leaned back on the cot, oblivious to the effect he'd had, and popped open the bottle to check the pills.
But as Cecilia sat at her desk, her pen moving a little slower than before, she couldn't quite shake the warmth in her chest, or the way her thoughts kept drifting back to that smirk of his.
Raegar slipped quietly from the peaceful garden, his farewells lingering softly in the warm evening air as he treaded the familiar stone path toward the dining hall. The scent of blooming night flowers faded behind him.
Soon to be replaced by the faint aroma of roasted herbs and fresh bread wafting from the hall's open windows. His steps were measured, his mind still tangled in the day's events, when a sudden rustle in his pocket jolted him from his thoughts.
Before he could react, Drusilla, his mischievous Dark Fairy lover, burst forth in a flurry of shimmering wings, her tiny form expanding in a swirl of violet light until she stood before him in her full, radiant size.
Her hourglass frame quivered like a leaf caught in a gentle breeze, her golden hair cascading in waves that caught the fading sunlight. ''Rae!'' she exclaimed, her eyes glinting with mock severity. ''What in the stars were you up to while I was napping?''
Raegar's heart sank with a pang of guilt, his face softening as he met her gaze. Without a word, he unclasped the heavy cloak from his shoulders, its deep fabric worn but warm from his travels.
Stepping closer, he draped it carefully over Drusilla's slender frame, the oversized garment enveloping her like a protective cocoon. The gesture was tender, almost apologetic, and her expression shifted instantly.
''Sorry, I was leveling up my Wind Element,'' he explained. ''I forgot you were in my pocket, thanks to reading before Cecilia arrived.
When hearing his explanation, a radiant smile broke across her face, her earlier indignation melting into a warmth that seemed to light up the twilight around them. ''Thank you, handsome,'' she whispered.
The cloak, far too large for her, pooled at her feet, but she clutched it tightly, her cheeks glowing with a mix of delight and affection as she looked up at him, her big blue eyes sparkling like twin stars in the gathering dusk.
Without a word, Drusilla rose onto her tiptoes, her eyes locked with his, and pressed a passionate kiss against his lips. A surge of electricity coursed through his veins, igniting every nerve as he eagerly returned the kiss.
His hands found her waist, pulling her closer until their bodies melded together in a heated embrace. Her warmth enveloped him, and the world around them seemed to fade. Following that, the couple separated as the whispers became louder, causing the two to laugh.
Following that, they strolled toward the dining room, the soft echo of their footsteps mingling with the faint, eager growl of his stomach, a reminder of the hunger that had been building all day.
After ten minutes of walking, their hands still entwined, Raegar caught sight of the group gathered outside the dining room. The soft glow of the evening light bathed the scene, and as Selene turned, her eyes locked onto them.
Her face broke into a radiant smile, her voice ringing with warmth and excitement. ''Rae! Over here!'' she called, waving enthusiastically.
