Chapter 350 Insomnia
Kagura Hikaru's room had a window facing the outside of the house, through which one could gaze at the sky.
At this time, the window was open, and the cold wind entered the room through the gaping hole.
However, Kagura Hikaru, lying on the floor, seemed as if he felt no change in temperature, still dressed in light clothing, his body spread out in the shape of a "big," lying there motionless. If his eyes weren't open, one would think, at first glance, that he resembled a lifeless corpse, heavy with the stillness of death.
"Xingxing, I can't see you..." His gaze was lost in the night sky outside the window.
The sky over Tokyo, of course, bore no stars.
Compared to his old home in Wakayama, where the Milky Way spanned the heavens and stars filled the sky, the starry sky over Tokyo was more like the deep sea, where not a single ray of light could penetrate.
The only beautiful thing in the Tokyo night sky might have been the bright moonlight, everlasting and pure.
Tonight was a full moon night.
The full moon was radiant, spreading soft light, so beautiful it seemed unreal.
Kagura Hikaru couldn't help but feel envious.
Such a beautiful moon certainly couldn't understand his pain; it stood so high above everything. He truly wanted to pull it down from the sky.
Thinking thus, Kagura Hikaru reached out his hand to cover the moon in the sky. The moonlight filtered through the gaps between his fingers, and he squinted his eyes.
The time was now two in the morning.
Still unable to sleep.
Not that he did not desire to, but that he could not.
Whether his eyes were open or closed, a plethora of voices constantly emerged in the air, drilling into his brain and speaking within his head.
For the first time, Kagura Hikaru realized that people talked in their minds even in their sleep, more peculiar and straightforward than during the day.
Thanks to the neighbors nearby and people who knows how far away, he was now lying on the cold wooden floor admiring the moon, instead of comfortably meeting with Lord Zhou in a warm blanket.
To be honest, several hours had passed since he had acquired this ability, and Kagura Hikaru had thought he had somewhat become accustomed to it, but the inability to sleep was still particularly tough, especially at the thought that it would be like this until death, an unbearable anxiety and sense of powerlessness emerged.
If there were a chance now to abandon all his abilities, even if it meant forgetting all the knowledge he had collected over the years, just to be relieved from this current state, Kagura Hikaru would be completely willing. Rather, if there were such an opportunity, he would not hesitate at all.
Unfortunately, there were no such "ifs," and he was not naive enough to believe that such good fortune would come.
He had already moved past the stage of self-pity; his mind had reached a state of numbness.
Although he still could not ignore the voices buzzing like thousands of flies, he could, by now, maintain his normal thinking to some extent. Frankly speaking, this progress was quite remarkable; at least Kagura Hikaru didn't think this state was something that one could endure or get used to.
At this moment, he only felt as though there must have been a nerve that had snapped inside his brain, on one hand crowded by countless people's thoughts, and on the other hand still able to conduct his own reasoning, as if coexisting with numerous personalities in a strange manner.
The level of exhaustion of this state was beyond imagination, his eyelids so heavy, his brain as if filled with lead, yet even so, he was unable to sleep, a testament to the toxicity of this ability.
If he wanted to fall asleep, he would probably need to use "physical means," that is, to knock himself out.
However, he had already tried that method.
Three hours ago, he had asked Komori Ai to induce unconsciousness by cutting off the blood flow to his neck. According to her, he had woken up in less than two seconds, looking as if he had had a nightmare, nowhere near achieving rest.
Even in the unconscious state, those terrifying voices followed like a festering sore and the great mental shock directly startled him awake.
With that, Kagura Hikaru no longer held any illusions.
The first night, he watched the moon pass by.
After dawn, he habitually picked up his school bag intending to go to school, only to be stopped by his family.
"What are you thinking, don't force yourself at times like this, just stay home!" Kagura's father said bluntly.
"Mister Hikaru, you don't look too well. Should you go back to bed for a bit?" his stepmother asked with concern.
Being told that, his willingness to go to school faded, and he obediently returned to his room.
Komori Ai suggested they skip school together, but Kagura's father punished her with a fierce punch and kicked her out of the house.
This is the consequence of revealing her true form; she could no longer do as she pleased as before.
Upon returning to his room, a strong sense of loneliness swept over Kagura Hikaru.
He was bored.
Because of his runaway mind-reading ability, he couldn't concentrate on doing anything.
Take reading, for example.
Now when Kagura Hikaru picked up a book, the text looked jumbled to him, as if he had dyslexia. He couldn't make sense of a single line, his eyes glazing over the words.
In the past, he loved reading light novels to relieve boredom, but now even that hobby had been taken from him.
Because he couldn't find anything to entertain himself with, time seemed to pass much slower for him than for other people.
Boredom and anxiety, coupled with the fatigue from staying up all night, Kagura Hikaru could hear his body crying out in pain. He needed rest, but due to objective reasons, he couldn't rest, only trapped in a vicious cycle.
The prophesized dire situation seemed to have moved one step closer to him.
In the afternoon, when school was out,
Chiyoko Ayakoji, Hina Kiryu, Karen Ai Cheng, and Motoyo Kohinata, four girls came to visit him after learning from Komori Ai that Kagura Hikaru was absent.
Hina Kiryu said, "Mister Hikaru, we came to see you, here, these are apples we bought on the way."
Motoyo Kohinata asked, "What did the doctor say? Did they find out what's wrong?"
Karen Ai Cheng questioned, "Kagura... Can you still come to school?"
Chiyoko Ayakoji remarked, "You look very pale. You really should rest properly."
The girls chattered away.
Even Chiyoko Ayakoji, who was usually the least expressive with her emotions among the four, visibly showed concern at this moment.
Mental issues are not ordinary sickness and naturally must be handled with great caution.
After that, his memory became blurry. He couldn't clearly recall what they said or how he responded, only that he probably hadn't hidden his deteriorated state from them, as the mood had remained heavy until they left.
When the girls dispersed, the room quickly returned to silence—not exactly, since Komori Ai was still there.
She chanted over Kagura Hikaru's head, trying to use her ability to deceive his senses as a form of treatment, but it was clearly failing, just like the day before.
Ignoring Komori Ai, who while babbling things like "Why, why doesn't it work, hee-hee, it's so tough, I'm supposed to be unbeatable, why did it fail, hee-hee!" laughed hysterically, Kagura Hikaru remained silent and lost in thought.
His Foresight Skill activated once more, and this time he saw a city sky being rained upon by a meteor shower of missiles.
Surprisingly, he could hear the thoughts of people appearing in the future scene while in the prophetic space.
Agitated, joyful, terrified... Numerous thoughts flooded into his mind, and his consciousness wavered like a solitary raft in a stormy sea.
Couldn't he escape even here? Wouldn't they give him even a few seconds of relief?!
When he came out of the prophetic state, Kagura Hikaru's complexion turned frightfully pale, and he punched the low table fiercely.
Komori Ai, who had been working her powers behind him, jumped in fright, sat down quietly, and dared not speak.
Normally, Kagura Hikaru would apologize for his rudeness, but this time he didn't even glance at Komori Ai, his head bowed, immersed in his own world.
