Chapter 3: Magic Affinties And Their Rarity
Below this, I will include a list of magic affinities/types listed in rarity order, just as a reference for both me and the readers. Just remember that most of these affinities would be at the lowest level, and the highest levels usually refer to Gods or at least Demigods. This is a purely informational chapter, but I would still suggest reading it so you have an understanding of what kinds of magic exist and what the average person can do. Which is the lowest level, by the way. Also, if you don't want to read the chapter, that is fine. I just suggest you read the very last paragraph.
Affinities in Rarity Order from most common to rarest. Just remember that the levels of power are separate, so just because someone gets a super rare affinity doesn't mean it's all that powerful.
1. Alteration (Reinforcing Objects and making them stronger, and making things like mines safer. It can also be used on oneself to make oneself more durable, and can also transmute materials. At the lowest level, the user can instinctively know the durability of items or places. Highest levels can transmute any material into whatever they desire and can create highly realistic golems that can learn and improve. )
2. Water (Summoning water, controlling water. At the lowest levels can make one's hands moist. At the highest levels can be used to part entire seas or make areas devoid of all water, or cause massive floods. )
3. Abjuration (Creating Shields, Barriers, Increasing Magic Regen, and adding temporary resistances. At the lowest level, the user can create a small 1 inch wide barrier that is thin as paper. Highest levels can create barriers that span thousands of miles and even banish demons or otherworldly beings, including up to gods or equivalents. )
4. Nature (Talking to animals, plants, and other beings of nature. Makes the user blessed with varying levels when in nature. Such as finding what they are looking for, animals giving the user help, or even nature literally moving to help the user. It can also boost the power of plants nearby to improve survivability and harvest yield. At the highest levels, the user can create new Ents and nature spirits. The user will also become favoured by the world, which makes others less likely to be able to harm the user. )
5. Shamanistic (Differs from Nature in that the user channels the spirits of animals and other nature-born creatures to give the user some boon or boost. Rarely ever that strong, but highest levels can channel mythological creatures and even transform their body into the creature they are channeling. )
6. Earth (Changing the Earth/Ground to suit the user's will. Can be minor as creating softer soil, to at the highest levels creating Earthquakes that span thousands of miles. And transforming land into different terrains. )
7. Air (Changing the movement of air. At the lowest level can create a very slight breeze slightly stronger than simply blowing their breath. To create hurricanes that devastate entire regions. Can mimic the effects of a water affinity, but not fully replicate the effects to the same extent. )
8. Illusion (Creating false or illusory objects or erasing the sound the user makes. It can also be used to become invisible or at least hidden by false images. At low levels, the user can create small floating objects with no sound or other components. At the highest levels, the user can become completely undetected by most means. Can create entire false towns or cities with realistic sound, touch, smell, sight, and even taste. )
9. Fire (Creation and control of fire and heat. At low levels can slightly increase the temperature of an object. At the highest levels can melt any objects and summon great firestorms that can level a city or devastate a region. Can freely manipulate the temperature of everything within sight of the user. )
10. Frost (Opposite of Fire. Control Ice and snow, as well as a lack of heat. At low levels can slightly decrease the temperature of an object. At the highest level can summon blizzards that can freeze entire regions and can even cause localized Ice Ages. Can freely manipulate the temperature of everything within sight of the user. )
11. Alchemy (Creation of potions, poisons, healing salves, and medicines by using magic and physical materials. At the lowest levels can create low-level magic potions that might confer minor buffs or debuffs. At the highest levels can create potions that grant eternal life and heal any disease or ailment. Can also create a poison that can kill anything, including the divine. )
12. Divination (Finding objects, people, or information via magic. At the lowest levels can learn vague hints of what they are looking for. At the highest levels can find any object, person, or piece of info, even if it is no longer on the same plane of existence. Can even get small glimpses of soon-to-happen events that might happen to the user. )
13. Lightning (Creation and control of lightning and similar energy forms. At the lowest level can create a small static shock. At the highest levels can control the internal energy of all living beings within a few thousand miles and summon lightning storms. And it can produce a nearly unlimited amount of electricity. )
14. Food (Summoning, Creation, and Improvement of food and other types of sustenance. At the lowest level can create an ounce of edible grass. At the highest levels, it can create food that satisfies the user for the rest of their existence and can even give a boost to the consumer's power for varying levels of time, depending on the base power of the individual. )
15. Fae (Fae Magic can only be used by Fae and those who are blood related to Fae. This magic encompasses a range of abilities, including curses, illusions, mind reading, psychic powers, shapeshifting, flight, nature manipulation, and many others. Due to the diverse nature of Fae, this Affinity is fairly inclusive, but there is a distinct difference between Fae Magic and Non-Fae Magic. Another difference from others is that the level of Fae Affinity cannot change from Birth. At the lowest level, users can create minor illusions that mimic one of the five senses. At the highest levels, users can do small-scale Reality Warping and can apply curses that cannot be cured by normal means. The average Fae is quite peaceful in this story, and they are rarely seen in civilization due to their preference for nature. )
16. Light/Darkness (Technically, the same type as Light and Darkness are one and the same. Creation, Control, and Alteration of Darkness and Light. At the lowest levels can create a small ball of light that glows with dim light. At the highest levels, the user can cause total darkness of thousands of miles or the inverse and cause total light. The user can also create beings of light or darkness that will last for some time before dispelling. )
17. Enchanting (The magic of enchanting objects with spells from various fields of magic, usually via the use of Runes. This form of magic has mostly replaced Ritual Magic due to it being far safer and somewhat easier to learn. At the lowest levels, the user can create simple one-use magic items that can replicate the effects of other lowest-level magic effects. The level of affinity in Enchanting is directly correlated to the level of spells they can enchant onto objects. At the highest levels, the user can create divine artifacts and even use any magic items regardless of requirements with no negative side effects. )
18. Ritual (The ability to cast/perform rituals. Ritual magic is unique in the way that it allows the user to cast any other type of magic as long as it is via a ritual. It also has a more vague level of affinity since technically, even a low-level affinity can still cast High-level ritual spells. So this form of magic is more based on the willpower of the user and the ability to copy very precise diagrams to use Rituals. Making a mistake in a ritual usually causes the death of the caster, so Ritual Magic is uncommon by the fact that few ever try to learn it and even fewer master it to any large degree. )
19. Balance (The use of magic to create balance. At the lowest levels, the user can look at an object and tell if it is balanced. Not how to make it more balanced, just if it is balanced. At the highest levels, the user can force objects, people, and even concepts into balance. But has the drawback of making the user very unlikely to get involved. It is unknown if it is the magic that changes the caster or if Balance Magic users are just always very indecisive and take very long to come to a conclusion due to having to take everything into consideration. Either way, they are infuriating to talk to most of the time. )
20. Poison (Creation, Control, and Manipulation of all forms of Toxins, Poisons, and Venoms via magic. Unlike Alchemy, which requires physical objects to be used, Poison Magic creates the Poison via pure mana. Can create Toxins, Poisons, and Venoms in any form the user desires, assuming they have the appropriate level of affinity. It heavily relies on imagination, and no two users of poison magic will likely have the same poisons. At the lowest levels, the user can create mild irritants in the size of a few drops. At the highest levels, the user can create incurable toxins that can wipe out entire cities in minutes. )
21. Sealing (The creation and manipulation of seals and contracts. Seals created are similar to rituals in the fact that affinity is less important, as they are based on knowledge more than raw magical talent. Contracts are a subset of Sealing magic that allows the binding of two or more beings together via a magical contract. A user with a Low Affinity can increase it to Master rank within less than a decade if they are naturally talented with learning and retaining knowledge. Requires a steady hand and good ability to calculate. Or if you are strong enough, you can brute force seals, but doing so this way often leads to seals not being permanent or lasting as less time than they would otherwise. At the lowest levels, the user can do nothing as they must first learn how to make seals before anything can be done. Which is similar to rituals in the case that, unlike other affinities, the user can't instinctively use them. At the highest levels, the user can seal any being away permanently or even seal away portions or all of a being's power. Seal made at the highest level might be impossible to break without the original creator's permission. )
22. Faith (This type of magic defies normal classification since technically anyone can use this form of magic if the being they worship permits them. The main difference lies in the ability to use said gifted power efficiently. At the lowest level, the user will be slightly more able to contact the being of power. At the highest level, the user can be used to accept the descent of a being of great power with no side effects and can even temporarily take over the duties of the greater being if they have any. They can also borrow the power without cost or side effects, so long as the greater being agrees to lend the power in the first place. No matter the level of affinity, the user requires faith in the being they are borrowing from. Without it, the user can never borrow the power. It should also be noted that all power gained this way is borrowed, meaning the user owns none of the power themselves, and it will often come with a price. )
23. Mind (The manipulation of the mind and memories of others. At the lowest levels, the user is able to slightly improve their own memory and retention speed. At the highest levels, the user can control the minds of hundreds of thousands and read the minds of millions at once. Doing so without a good enough physique and mental fortitude will cause instant brain death and the liquification of most internal organs. A strong enough willpower or mental power can prevent either mind control or mind reading, respectively. )
24. Restoration (The ability to heal wounds, restore stamina, and dispel curses or other ailments. At the lowest levels, the user will have a slightly improved immune system and can speed up the healing of very small wounds and scratches. At the highest levels, the user can bring the dead back to life no matter how much time has passed, as long as the body has some piece of their body that remains or their soul can be contacted. It can cure any illness or ailment and can dispel all types of curses. The user also gains a near-perfect immortality that makes them nearly impossible to kill physically. It will even fortify the user's soul to make them more resistant to soul-based attacks. )
25. Blood (The Manipulation, Control, and Use of Blood for magic. Blood Magic is one of the few types of magic that is most often either lumped in with other kinds of magic or classified as evil. Blood Magic is often used for more hostile actions or used in sacrificial rituals. It can be used to bind a person or bloodline to a user or curse. It can be used to empower Demons and Vampires. It can also be used for more mundane Blood Oaths to a close friend or Blood Brother. Also, unlike almost any other type of magic, finding out one has a Blood Affinity is nearly impossible without being taught Blood Magic. There are no signs that one may be gifted in Blood Magic. But it is also much more likely to be passed on via a bloodline. If even one person awakens a Blood Magic Affinity, then it will increase the likelihood that future descendants will have one by a massive amount. Some Demon types and all Vampires have a Blood Affinity. )
26. Summoning [Animals] (Summoning magic can be split into four distinct types, each having their own rarity, so they will all be listed separately. This version of Summoning Magic is capable of summoning or creating animals via magic and controlling them as well as communicating with them at higher levels. Created creatures will dispel after some time, and summoned will return to where they came from unless otherwise decided by the summoner and the summoned. At the lowest level, the user can summon an Ant. Just 1 Ant, and the user cannot understand it, nor can they control it. At the highest level, the user can summon or create thousands of animals of their choice at once, and the user will have complete control of the animals. This affinity will eventually give the user the ability to speak with all animals regardless of whether they were summoned or not. But conversely, the way the summoner treats his summons will determine the stance of all wildlife. Treat them poorly, and nature will become your enemy. But treat them well and Nature will treat you fairly. This summoner cannot summon or create magical creatures. )
27. Life (Magic related to the flows of life and all it brings. At the lowest level will allow the user to be able to sense the level of life energy/force in others. At the highest levels, the user can bring entire cities back to life, and it will be impossible to kill via physical means. Life magic can be used for healing or the acceleration of natural growth. It can also be used to restore life to those who lack it, such as those suffering from diseases or old age. Unlike Restoration Magic, this form of magic is passive and can easily lead to extremely long lifespans and near immortality. [I.E., Think Hashirama Senju's insane healing factor. Or even Deadpool's Healing Factor. ] This Affinity can lead to a strong sensing ability that allows one to detect lifeforms from far distances. It will also make the user more liked by the living and more despised by the unliving. )
28. Dark/Evil (This magic includes the form of magic that is fueled by negative emotions and is almost exclusively used for evil purposes. At the lowest level, the user can sense the inner darkness in others. At the highest levels, the user can corrupt almost anyone they wish and turn them into horrific nightmare creatures. This magic is rare, partially due to extermination efforts by all groups, but also because it is a form of magic that technically doesn't require an affinity from birth. Instead, one could develop an affinity with Dark/Evil magic just by channeling a massive amount of darker emotions or committing acts of evil. [Think Rape, Murder, Child Molestation, Torture, Defiling the Dead, Genocide, Demon or Evil God Consorting, Mantling/Attempting to Mantle, Soul Selling/Manipulation, etc. ] All of the previous example need the user to do said actions more than once in most situations to cause them to completely fall. But it is technically possible for a person to be born with this affinity, but not be evil. It's just very, very, very unlikely. )
29. Dream (The Creation, Control, and Manipulation of Dreams. At the lowest level, the user can actively Lucid Dream at will. At the highest level, the user can create dream constructs in the real world that are powered by the gathered dream energy the user has collected from dreaming people. The user can also transport their physical body into a dream world and manipulate this dream world however they see fit. This Affinity has few offensive options as it is mostly for self-improvement or protection. It can be used to train others while they sleep. )
30. Viromancy (Creation of Disease, Plagues, and Viruses and the control of these creations. At the lowest level can users can make themselves have the sniffles at will. At the highest levels, the user can create plagues that can wipe out entire civilizations. Even at the highest levels, the user cannot completely control the created Diseases, Plagues, and Viruses, but they can instantly cure anyone of any ailment as long as the source was from a Disease, Plague, or Virus. Makes the user completely immune to all the mentioned types of ailments, and even other Viromancers cannot affect each other. )
31. Lunar/Solar (Listed at the same time as they are equally rare since only Twins can develop these Affinities and will have the same level of Affinities. At the lowest levels, the user can cause their respective celestial object to shine a beam of light on themselves for 1 minute. The beam will have no negative side effects on the users, but can cause minor irritation in others if the users will it. At the highest levels, the users can move their respective objects to bring in the day or night. They also become protected by all beings of their respective time of day. If they are killed, they can resurrect once per year with no cost. If they die of old age, then they simply cease to exist. Only one pair of Lunar/Solar can exist at once, and once one dies forever, the other will do so within a decade. )
32. Emotion (The Control, Manifestation, and Manipulation of Emotions. At the lowest levels can calm a crying baby. At the highest level can induce any emotion into any being. Emotion Magic users are heavily specialized in specific emotions. Think Cupid for Love and Desire, and Phobos for Fear and Panic. They also almost always have no other affinities. While one can have control over many emotions, it is rare and will usually mean they have little control over all the different emotions. Think Jack of All Trades but Master of None. )
33. Fate/Prophecy (The ability to see and predict the future or possible futures. At the lowest level, the user can tell you what is about to happen, after it has happened. This makes it difficult to tell if one has the affinity or if they just like messing with people. Unlike most other kinds of magics, this one requires no training and will develop over a person's lifetime. Also, unlike others, everyone who gets this Affinity has a hard limit that they cannot go past. Furthermore more with the changes in the world, Seers are very unreliable, and it can be very difficult to tell who has the legitimate affinity or who is a fraudster. At the highest levels, the user can predict any future event down to the second, but this can also cause the user to be perpetually stuck in the future with no way to look at the present. Madness is common with this Affinity. Prophecies can be very deceiving, and using them can be very dangerous. )
34. Summoning [Magic Animals] (Like the previous version, but this version can summon or create magical creatures. At the lowest level, the user can summon a magical ant. The user can understand the ant but can't control it. At the highest level, the user can summon one very powerful magical creature, like a Dragon or an army of lesser magical creatures. The user can control created but not summoned creatures. Magical creatures created at this level can reproduce, but cannot stay permanently. Similar to the previous levels, the actions of the user impact the attitude of others. )
35. Spiritual (The Manipulation of Souls and Spirits as well as the ability to speak with the dead and the long dead. At the lowest level, the user can see the spirits of those who have recently passed. Can be easily mistaken with a mentally ill person who sees "spirits". At the highest levels, the user can control the souls of others even while they are alive and can even damage divine/greater souls. Will often become the ferryman/guide of the dead when they pass. It will make the user immune to soul manipulations. Can also bring the dead back to life at this level. )
36. Gravity (The Manipulation, Creation, and Control of Gravity via magic. At the lowest level, the user can increase gravity by 0.05 times Earth's Gravity. At the highest level, the user can create miniature Black Holes that can compress and destroy almost anything within their range. Also makes the user immune to gravity and Gravity Magic attacks. Can also theoretically use this power to move faster than light speed. Does not mean you would survive the trip, but it could move you that fast. )
37. Space (The Manipulation and Control of Space via Magic. At the lowest levels, the user will have the ability to sense space. As in the movement of an object through space, even without seeing it. This can include planets. But the range is only 2 meters at the beginning.
[AN: In the benininig... in the benigning. Sorry, I just had to as I watched that video as soon as I wrote at the beginning. ]
At the highest level, the user can move through space freely and even sever the space between any objects. For example, they could just split an Atom whenever with no effort. Can teleport unlimited distances with up to 12 people/beings. Can create barriers that separate two places in space. Spatial Sense can now extend up to the entire planet. And can predict when anything might try to move or harm the user, as long as it moves through space. )
38. Summoning [Demons/Angels] (Like previous versions, only this version summons or creates either Angels or Demons. At the lowest level, the user will be visited by a representative of either side. It will depend on what version the user has. At the highest level, the user can summon the highest level of angel or demon and will likely become half of whatever species they summon or create. Gods and Evil Gods would often use these summoners to bring forth armies to fight each other. These types of summoners are now considered extinct as they have been hunted and persecuted extensively. )
39. Necromancy (The Creation, Summoning, and Control of the Dead and Undead. At the lowest level, the user can summon and control an undead ant. At the highest level, the user can transform themselves into an Overlord and have an unlimited amount of controlled undead. They can resurrect those that have died as long as there are remains left. They can create high-tier undead. At this level, they can cause instant death to anyone they can see. Necromancers are seen as a danger to all life and have been hunted down to extinction. Even the Gods did not like Necromancers, regardless of which side they are on. Undead beings do not necessarily have any affinity for Necromancy. Undead can exist naturally, but are fairly uncommon. )
40. Time (The Manipulation of Time via Magic. At the lowest level, the user can perceive the passing of time. And with extreme focus, can even reverse it by a few seconds. At the highest level, the user can travel through time. It should be noted that even at the highest levels, they have to follow certain rules or they will be erased by the Universe. Time doesn't like changing. But the user at this level can easily accelerate or slow down time for themselves. They are also automatically ageless and cannot be damaged by the ravages of time. )
41. Dragon (This magic is unique in that only Dragons and those related to them can use this. It allows for the manipulation and alteration of reality by using Words of Power. Or words in the Draconic Language. The Draconic Language was the first ever language, and all languages are based on it, so one way to tell if someone might have the Dragon Affinity is the ability to understand all languages. The user may not be able to speak all languages, but they can communicate with almost all beings and convey general thoughts or ideas to others. An affinity for this type of magic can only be seen when they try to read or hear the language. Those with no talent cannot read or understand the language. This version is solely based on talent, as one cannot increase their predestined level of talent in this magic. Talent mostly affects the speed at being able to use the language. )
42. Divine/Demonic (These are two sides of the same coin. This Magic can only be used by their respective factions. Despite Divine Magic being labelled as the good Magic, this is not really accurate since they can both do the exact same things. In order to use this kind of magic, the user must have a blood relation to the species in question. Affinity levels still apply to this Affinity, as just because you have a Divine Affinity does not mean it is automatically God level. )
With all of these, it should be noted that almost all affinities require training from someone who has the same affinity; otherwise, the user must research and develop all their own spells and could end up hurting themselves. So you could have a Master level Affinity, but if you are never trained, then you would be no better than a Low level Affinity. And the average lifespan for most people would likely be around 30 or 40 at this time. So even if you have great potential, if no one trains you, you would die before you could develop anything worthwhile on your own. And even if life is better than elsewhere in the world, it is still the Middle Ages, and you can't just drop everything to do training and research on something that might not even give you good results. Also, some spells are able to be cast by anyone regardless of what affinity they have, but they are uncommon and usually fairly weak. If you have any questions about magic and how it works in this story, then leave a comment. I will answer it as soon as I have an answer. Anyway, that is all for now. Until next time, Ciao.
