Chapter 3: Prologue 3
Operation Debut: In session
Right now there are a few more episodes till the finale, and I'm still here with the remaining 20 girls. I must debut with a group of 11, and there seems to be no hope for me.
As of right now, since the next two episodes would be a two-part special and there weren't too many ranks left, they dropped the ranks and let us mingle around on camera without problems. I was standing by my dorm room since I lost pretty much all my roommates during the episodes. I was waiting for Kitty, Alison, and ✨Akemi✨.
I overheard some other girls discussing something interesting.
"I heard the producers talking, and they said Alison wasn't gonna debut if they couldn't find another person to rap with her," A girl whispered.
"What? But she's one of the top singers here. She's right with Akemi," Another girl whispered.
"You know that stuff doesn't matter as long as you're pretty, and since Alison is supposedly 19, she's currently the oldest of us, and the producers claim she's way older than that and are worried her true age might show,"
"A lot of the girls here might not debut because either their spot has been reserved for someone else, they're not popular, or their looks don't fit the group."
"So not only did the producers decide to keep their main lineup from the beginning, but they are also bringing in popular members?"
"Exactly...Wait, a lineup has already been decided?"
"Not really. They just kept a certain group of people they thought were marketable, and then the final lineup would be all producer picks except for one person."
Talent doesn't matter...This group is gonna fail with the way they were choosing the members. If they want the group to succeed, then they need to have skills to succeed. Is debuting in a potentially bad group even worth it at this point?
"Emily, can you help me with the lyrics?" A girl suddenly asked.
"What?...Why would you want my help?" I questioned.
"Because I thought since you were a pro when it came to vocals, you could help," Se explained.
I knew the basics and could help her, but the question was why me over literally anyone else, especially when I'm the least likable person here.
"Sure, whatever," I replied, but then suddenly some more girls came to me for help.
The next thing I knew, I was helping 5 girls with their songs and whatever problems they had with their lyrics. I didn't understand why they needed my help until I saw Kitty peeking from behind the door cheekily.
When she smiles like that, she truly reminds me of the Cheshire cat. From that, I could tell she probably told them to come to me or recommended me.
I asked the girl next to me, "Who told you to come to me for advice?" I asked her.
"Alison," She answered, which shocked me.
Wait, if Alison recommended her to me, why is Kitty watching me right now? Also, why would she recommend me when she's a better singer than me?
I went to Kitty's and opened the door.
"What are you doing? What's going on?" I asked her.
"Nothing, just watching my bestie." Kitty's obvious lie made me believe she's planning something stupid.
"Watching your 'bestie' help out others doesn't seem very entertaining. Also, what's up with Alison sending me some girls my way to help when she needs to boost her popularity some way?" I asked Kitty, and she looked confused.
"There's rumors going around saying that Alison won't debut if they can't find another rapper, or else Alison would just be a useless member," I informed, and she looked at me shocked.
"What?" Kitty started, "We did all of this because we were worried that you probably wouldn't be able to debut."
In my head, I thought Alison was doing this because she was lazy when, in reality, she was trying to help me. I didn't think they saw me as that close of a friend to want to help me. I guess I made the right decision to choose their group in the beginning.
"After I finish working with them, we need to have a group discussion about this," I declared, and Kitty agreed.
I closed the door behind me and noticed the silence in the room.
"If you or Alison can't debut, then who will help us when any one of are struggling?" One girl questioned.
The other girls nodded their heads, and I sighed.
This girl stood out because she was the best dancer among the remaining girls, but she wanted to be known as a vocalist instead of for her dance skills. Her name was Sakura, and just like her name, she can make cherry blossoms appear on her.
Sadly, her personality wasn't as pretty as her quirk she was one of Akemi's friends who didn't like me or my critiques.
"Don't worry, I will debut and help all of you. Alison will debut as well, I promise you that." I reassured them, though I did not know whether or not I would debut or if they would either.
They were popular members, so I assumed maybe they would. I should've been nicer while here; now I'm worried I won't be able to debut with the rest of them.
"Anyways, let's get back to helping you all."
.・゜゜・ ・゜゜・.
I was in Akemi's room with the group, walking back and forth, thinking about ways to save us from not being in the lineup.
From what I know, the producers are choosing their main lineup, and the audience vote will be for one person only. The audience vote is out of the question; the real question is whether or not I've proved myself valuable to be a part of the group.
And if I haven't yet, how can I prove to them I'm valuable? Also, how to help Alison, she's—
Damn it! I didn't want to have to do this, but it seems I have no choice.
"A rapper," I mumbled.
"Huh," Alison muttered.
"You seemingly won't debut unless there's a second rapper... I'm willing to become said second rapper," I offered.
Alison sighed in relief.
"Wait, but why become a rapper now when you've rejected the opportunity countless times?" Kitty asked me.
When you're the only Black person accepted into the show and you're constantly being encouraged to act like the stereotype that all Black people are 'hood' or 'rappers,' it is just very degrading and discourages me from wanting to debut.
"I just want to, in order to keep Alison from being eliminated—" I truthfully confessed.
"Whatever, just please debut," Akemi begged.
"If you're gonna rap, let me help you trade lines with someone else," Allison suggested.
There were two rapper roles in the song, which were the main rapper and the lead rapper, both having a similar amount of lines, though the main rapper would have the biggest impact. The song was a pretty-sounding school-like song. Sakura had the lead rapper role along with some vocal lines that didn't fit her vocal range, and it didn't help that she was pretty weak vocally.
So maybe my lines would help her out better.
Me and Alison went to my room since Sakura and I were roommates. Suddenly, we saw a group of girls laughing pretty loud while sitting on beds and in chairs.
"Hey, have you seen Sakura?" I asked them, making them all go quiet.
The room was suddenly so silent that all the girls were looking away while one girl muttered up the courage to talk.
"Why? Is she your friend or something?" Someone asked.
"No, we were planning on helping her with something—" Alison got interrupted when someone blurted out something.
"There's no way to help someone that sounds like a dying cat,"
The whole room gasped, but no one admitted who just spoke. So that's how we're playing.
"Cameras are on, so I advise you to be careful with what you say unless you truly want to get both eliminated and hated on," I warned them, closing the door.
Think it's a good idea to talk about someone behind their back. As expected from big-mouthed bitches. God, why can't some people keep it to themselves unless it's helping them in the long run?
"Oh look, she's there," Alison brought to my attention as I saw Sakura walking by herself.
Me and Alison jogged up to her.
"Sakura, can I please switch roles with you?" I asked her as soon as I came up to her.
This should be easy. Sakura wants to be seen as a singer, and getting a rapper role from her and giving her a vocalist position should be good for her to showcase her true talent.
"No," Sakura responded.
"What wh—"
"Because even with the few lines that required me to sing, I struggled HARD with it." Sakura started, "It's better for me to stick to rapping since it's obvious I can't sing."
Sakura, are you serious? God, of course, people who are most definitely debuting are bad-mouthing others or the least confident in themselves. But yet the only ones who truly try hard are the ones who believe they won't debut.
"Sakura, my lines fit your vocal range the best. You shouldn't struggle as much as you are now if we switch lines," I was trying to convince her.
"No!" Sakura kept refusing.
"Damn it, Sakura, what will make you say yes?" I cursed at her.
"Please, Sakura, we need your help," Alison begged.
"If you were as untalented as me, you could see why I would—"
"Are you serious right now? I am at risk of not debuting right now BECAUSE of how untalented I am. Sakura, you were in the official lineup since the beginning. I mean, you are loved by the audience and the producers, while both hate me. I'm not gonna debut BECAUSE everyone here freaking hates me and is just praying for my downfall. Right now I should cry and complain, NOT YOU!" I shouted at Sakura.
The hallway went silent. Whoever was in the hallway at the time stared at me. I looked like an ant shouting at Sakura, but she needed to hear this.
"Emi-" Alison put a hand on my shoulder, but I shrugged it off.
"If you want to be known as a good vocalist, then prove you are one instead of bitching about it. I have no other choice but to use your lines to potentially not only save myself but Alison as well, yet you're sitting there on your throne whining about what? THAT YOU'RE UNTALENTED!" I continued, and I could see Sakura shaking in fear.
"You know what? Screw you and your lines. If you're not gonna help, I'd rather not debut and hope Alison does instead of hearing you—" I practically blew up on her, and I saw her put her head down.
"Fine, we'll trade roles!" Sakura shouted back, and I could see her holding back her tears.
"But if I don't debut—"
"Just shut the hell up about whether or not you'll debut and come with us," I told her, dragging her with us.
With that, I'll use this role to the very extent and try my hardest to do what I can with this.
.・゜゜・ ・゜゜・.
It's late at night. The rest of my roommates were asleep, and I just came from the bathrooms. As I walked back to my room, I heard someone call me. It was Akemi.
"Oh, Akemi," I responded, but then she suddenly hugged me.
"Emi...I'm scared," Akemi was trembling in my arms.
"Akemi! What are you scared about?" I worriedly asked her.
Akemi had tears forming in her eyes. Did someone hurt her? Did someone make her feel uncomfortable? What is wrong with her?
"I'm worried you won't be able to debut. I don't want to go on without you, especially after what you promised." Akemi was teary-eyed and barely able to hold herself together.
Akemi was just worried about me. I mean, why wouldn't she? I feel hurt because I made her like this, so down and sorrowful, just when I was seeing her smile more.
"Don't worry, Akemi. I'll most definitely debut. And if I don't, you can punch or slap me—just hurt me however you want," I pledged, and Akemi punched me in the arm.
"Don't say that. I would never hurt you," Akemi responded.
And the same goes for me. I would never hurt you. I hope we never hurt each other.
