Chapter 16: Heart of Darkness Part 3

THE HELICOPTER BROADCAST

High above the chaos, a SHIELD surveillance helicopter hovered at the edge of the storm.

Inside, the reporter gripped the mic with white knuckles.

"We are currently live outside New Asgard," she said breathlessly. "For those just tuning in, what began as a confrontation between the Young Avenger, Naruto and the New Avengers, Ares has escalated into a full on catastrophic event."

The feed panned shakily to the sky, catching flashes of flames and spirals of darkness colliding above.

The reporter's voice trembled.

"We watched as Ares, the God of War, split the sky with his axe, engaging in what appeared to be a one-on-one battle with Naruto. And then…"

She paused and swallowed.

"Then the Sentry appeared."

The footage slowed, caught in the rhythm of a nightmare.

Frame by frame, it played out,

Sentry hovered high above the battlefield, golden and radiant, a false savior cloaked in borrowed light.

Ares turned toward him confused and wary. There was something in the War God's eyes that hadn't been there before, a moment of hesitation.

That was all it took.

One moment of weakness.

Then came the brutality.

The next frames unfolded like a tragedy written in blood. Sentry, no, whatever wore his face lunged forward. Ares didn't even have time to raise his weapon. He was seized, lifted, and ripped apart like a paper mache.

His body split in two, divine entrails spilling like molten silk across the shattered courtyard.

The sky didn't roar.

Instead it went silent.

And then it turned black.

Sentry had changed.

The golden light faded. His skin darkened. Blonde hair drained to white. Eyes like burning suns. His voice changed. Reality changed. He changed.

And the world shuddered in horror.

The camera zoomed in on the thing now floating above New Asgard.

"That," whispered the pilot, "is not a man."

Then The Void looked at them.

Just looked.

And reached out one finger.

The screen flickered and cut to static.

The helicopter never fell.

It was simply… gone.

Blinked out of existence by The Void.

_______________________

It was the end of the world.

Light fractured in jagged spirals across the horizon as if the heavens themselves were being unstitched by an invisible hand of chaos.

Winds howled like banshees. Space twisted and gravity pulsed and faltered, pulling toward something that didn't belong in this world.

And Naruto was losing.

He surged upward, chakra cloak burning like the tail of a comet. His breath came ragged. His knuckles were raw. And still, the figure above him barely budged.

The Void hovered with unholy stillness, light bending around him like the air had given up. He didn't move. He simply existed. And that was enough to unnerve everything around him.

Naruto's vision blurred.

Then it fractured into a million pieces.

Like a mirror cracking in silence.

The sky above melted away. And in its place came a sea of blackness.

No sound.

No wind.

Just a void of silence and then,

Kamala.

Her body was twisted, broken. Her arms reached out to him, fingers curled in desperation as blood spread from her chest in wide, blooming patterns.

Kate.

Pinned beneath rubble, her bow snapped. Her eyes glassy. Her mouth open in a scream that made no sound.

Mother Jean.

Burned and alone, falling backwards into fire, hand outstretched. Her voice echoed in Naruto's skull like a memory caught mid-sob

"You were always my brightest boy..."

The children from the orphanage, gone. Not dead. Not destroyed. Erased. Their faces distorted like smeared ink. Their names curling like dust in the wind.

Valkyrie

Her armor was shattered. Her sword Dragonfang broken in half. Her body suspended in mid-air, pierced by threads of black light. Her eyes rolled back. Her lips mouthed one final word,

"Run."

Naruto screamed.

But it was like shouting through water.

His body moved, but he couldn't feel it. Nor could he stop it.

The blackness surged again. And from it, a voice, familiar now, smooth and cold:

"All things end, Naruto Uzumaki. Even you. Especially you."

Kurama's voice tore through the fog like a roar of fire.

"This isn't real, brat! You have to break free!"

The vision shattered in pieces.

Naruto's chakra flared again, burning the hallucination away in coils of golden flame. His breath snapped back into his lungs like a punch to the gut.

He was still flying in the air. Still alive.

But his heart pounded like it had aged a decade.

He stared at the space where the helicopter had been just a second ago.

Gone.

No fire. No explosion.

Just erased from existence.

His voice came out low, hoarse, like something dragged through broken glass.

"They're dead… because I hesitated."

Behind him, the sky warped again.

A ripple of green light flared through the air and then two figures appeared.

Valkyrie.

Loki.

Valkyrie was astride with her winged steed Warsong, blade already drawn, her eyes locked on The Void like a hunter sizing up a dragon. Beside her floated Loki, arms folded lazily, emerald magic drifting from his sleeves like cigarette smoke.

His cape snapped in the unnatural wind, and an arrogant smirk tugged at his lips.

Naruto's eyes widened when he saw him.

His breath caught.

"You're.. wait, you're Loki. Like, the Loki. The god of chaos. Trickster of Asgard. The whole nine yards."

Loki tilted his head slightly, clearly amused. "What a charming introduction."

Immediately Naruto went into a defensive stance.

"What are you doing here?!" he questioned.

Valkyrie's voice cut through the moment, sharp as Dragonfang's edge.

"It is a long story but this isn't our Loki. I'll explain later. But for now he's with us."

Naruto blinked, still catching up to the madness around him. Then he nodded, eyes hardening again.

"Fine," he muttered. "Then we need a plan. Because that thing isn't slowing down anytime soon."

He turned back toward The Void, hovering like an obsidian angel above them, wings of smoke and silence spread wide across the sky.

"We hit it and pray to the God's we find a way to kill it" Valkyrie said.

Loki gave a theatrical bow mid-air. "A suicidal assault. How barbaric. I'm in."

Naruto's cloak flared once more, chakra surging in defiance.

"Let's end this."

Valkyrie didn't wait.

Dragonfang blazed white-hot as she launched forward. Warsong dove beside her, wings carving burning arcs into the corrupted black sky.

Loki muttered something under his breath and vanished, reappearing above the Void with glowing chains in hand, each etched with ancient Asgardian runes.

Valkyrie struck first as Dragonfang howled across The Void's charcoal skin.

It bit deep, deeper than before. Not an inch. A gash. A searing wound across The Void's chest that hissed with divine energy. Shadows bled from it like smoke.

The Void recoiled. Not in pain, but rather in surprise.

Loki's chains snapped around its arms and chest, locking into place, runes glowing emerald.

"You think you can bind me?" it asked.

"No," Loki said, a grin cracking his calm. "But I think I can piss you off momentarily."

The Void pulsed.

The chains shattered. Energy lashed outward like a dying star. Valkyrie was hurled backward through the air.

Loki vanished into smoke.

But the wound on the Void's chest still sizzled.

Naruto surged forward, catching Warsong's fall mid-air, cloak dimming with strain.

"You good?" he asked, wind roaring around them.

She grunted. "I've endured worse."

"Then we're not done."

He turned to the monster above. Blood still ran from his lip. His body trembled. But his eyes were steady.

Valkyrie came again, this time diving low atop Warsong, the winged steed's hooves cutting thunder across the air. She rose into a tight spiral, then hurled Dragonfang with the precision of centuries of war. The blade spiraled upward crashing straight into the wound she'd made earlier.

Crack.

The Void actually bent.

Its body twisted, not in pain, not even resistance. but like a dimension failing to hold its shape. For a breath, it looked almost human again. It looked like Sentry.

Then it blinked.

And reality broke with it.

A pulse of void-light exploded from its chest.

Valkyrie and Warsong were both thrown backward, spinning through air warped by entropy. But Naruto moved fast through the air blazing upward and catching Warsong by the reins with one hand and steadying Valkyrie with the other.

"You just won't let me hit the ground, huh?" she muttered, coughing as she righted herself in the saddle.

"You hit the ground, then we might lose morale," he said flatly. "Also, you owe me a bowl of ramen after this."

Warsong neighed fiercely beneath her, wings flexing to steady their altitude

The three warriors moved as one.

The Void reeled, wounded now, but far from finished. Its presence still chewed at the edges of reality. The air itself vibrated like a struck bell.

Then the clouds parted again.

But this time, it wasn't a wound in reality.

It was a dimensional path.

The Bifrost.

A gleaming pillar of light cracked down from the heavens like a divine lance. The swirling spectrum roared with power, carving a gate through the distorted sky.

And from it came,

THUNDER.

Lightning crackled across the horizon as a familiar figure stepped from the light, his cape snapping behind him like a war banner torn from prophecy. Armor scorched from past battles. Stormbreaker clenched in one hand.

Thor.

His presence alone hit the battlefield like a declaration.

Beside him descended Sif, moving with calm and terrifying grace. Her armor gleamed like carved silver, and from her back flared wings of crystallized Bifrost energy, luminous and spectral, trailing fractured rainbow light as she moved. The wings flexed as if made of woven starlight, pulsing in rhythm with the Bifrost itself.

Above them, for a split second, another silhouette appeared, then plummeted.

A dark parachute deployed against the flickering sky. Nick Fury, descending fast and silent. Tactical gear tight to his body, pistol strapped to his thigh, jaw set like granite.

He dropped like a stone, veering away from the battle above

A parachute hissed down and landed hard near the cratered ridge. Nick Fury ripped off the harness and jogged toward them.

Fury crouched beside a half-shattered boulder where Kate, Kamala, and America had taken cover. Smoke and ambient energy still shimmered in the wind around them.

He pointed to the sky. "Alright, tell me what the hell happened."

Kamala wiped sweat from her brow, Noor energy flickering around her fingertips. "It started with Ares. He showed up, challenged Naruto to battle. We were fighting our own matchups.."

Kate nodded. "We took them down. Barely. But while we were finishing them off, something changed."

America chimed in, "That guy, Sentry, he came out of nowhere. Looked like backup at first."

"But it wasn't," Kate said bitterly. "He snapped. Walked right up to Ares and… tore him in half. Like he was made of paper."

Fury's face didn't move, but his good eye sharpened. "And now?"

Kamala looked up at the figure in the sky. "Now he's not even Sentry anymore. He's something else. And he's breaking everything."

Fury's jaw tightened. "Goddammit, Reynolds…"

He looked between them. "Alright. You three hold ground support. Keep those portals open, rain hell through 'em"

______________________

.

Naruto hovered midair, cloak still flaring with golden chakra, his breaths shallow and sharp. He turned as the Bifrost's light faded behind him, its echoes still humming in his bones.

Thor stepped forward first, Stormbreaker at his side, shoulders squared in divine resolve. He scanned the battlefield, the chaos, the warped sky, until his eyes landed on Loki.

He stopped cold.

"…Brother?"

Loki gave a sly, almost sheepish smile and spread his arms. "Yes, but not quite."

Thor's grip tightened instinctively on his axe. "What kind of trickery is this?"

"It's not him," Valkyrie cut in, her tone sharp but level. "He's a Loki from another realm beyond our own."

Thor blinked. His mouth opened, closed, then finally he growled, "Of course he is."

"Charming to see I still inspire such hostility across realities," Loki drawled.

Naruto, still catching his breath, turned to the god of thunder with raised eyebrows. "Wait, you're Thor? Like, the Thor? Lightning guy, hammer-axe thing, talks like a Shakespearean lumberjack?"

Thor blinked. "I… suppose?"

"I thought you'd be buffer," Naruto said flatly.

Loki smirked. "He gets that a lot."

Thor turned to him, blinked once. "…You're Naruto, yes? The one who fought Ares?"

"Yep," Naruto said, cracking his knuckles. "Mostly got punched around alot.. Good times."

Thor nodded slowly. "…You seem surprisingly intact."

Naruto shrugged. "I drank a lot of milk growing up, strong bones.."

Loki grinned. "Of course the two blonde idiots get along."

Sif stepped up beside them. "Enough talking. That thing's still breathing."

Naruto looked up at The Void, swirling above them like a dying star. He squinted.

"…Is it just me, or is it doing the thing where it floats creepily without moving at all?"

Loki folded his arms. "It's definitely doing the thing."

Thor spun Stormbreaker, lightning already crackling at his fingertips.

Valkyrie checked the grip on Dragonfang. "Let's go. Together."

Naruto's eyes didn't leave the monster. His voice was dry.

"Alright. I'll aim for the face. If I miss, someone hit it for me and pretend I meant to do that."

Sif gave the faintest smirk. "Understood."

Valkyrie rolled her eyes. "Odin help us all."
