American Comics: Multiverse of Madness

Chapter 532: 532. The Sudden Attack.

After discussing matters regarding the Justice Society, Alex continued his conversation with the aging Bruce Wayne about purchasing food and supplies.

Currently, Wayne Enterprises had already begun procuring food, and as previously agreed, the majority of the grain Bruce Wayne was acquiring consisted of unsellable exports—goods deemed unfit by customs inspections.

While such grain might not meet standards here, to the people in the wastelands, it was a divine blessing, a chance for survival.

Wayne Enterprises, being a massive conglomerate, had no shortage of individuals within the company harboring ulterior motives, especially since Bruce Wayne had no heirs. Many of them sought to ingratiate themselves with him, hoping to secure a share of the company's wealth after his passing.

This was precisely why, when Bruce suddenly convened a meeting to discuss purchasing supplies, not a single board member opposed the motion. All raised their hands in unanimous agreement.

It was common knowledge that these unsellable exports were goods no one wanted—usually sold off cheaply and mixed with waste to make animal feed. Buying such goods was a guaranteed loss.

Yet, even so, no one raised any objections. To them, it was just another one of the old man's whims.

Still, they didn't mind. Let him do as he pleased—it wasn't a significant expense. At worst, they could write it off as money spent to entertain him.

The procurement and stockpiling of supplies would take a few days. After confirming the timeline with Bruce, Alex ended the communication and deactivated the soundproof barrier he had set up.

However, as soon as the barrier was removed, Alex heard the sound of an argument coming from the living room outside his door.

"How can you be so stubborn? This isn't your era anymore! Do you realize how much of a threat someone like you—unable to control your power—poses to ordinary people?!"

From the accented voice, it was clear the speaker was Hawkman.

"So, that's your justification for locking Adam in prison? This is Kahndaq, and Adam is one of us. You have no right to interfere on our land!"

This voice could only belong to Adrianna.

"Do you know how many people he's just killed? You want to protect a criminal?"

"He killed members of Intergang—evil men who deserved it!"

"Even if they deserved to die, it's not his place to act as judge and executioner. They should face the law, not vigilante justice!"

"The law? What law? Our country is controlled by Intergang, and you want to talk to me about law?"

As the argument threatened to escalate, Alex sighed and pushed open the door.

Creak—

The sound of the door handle turning echoed through the room, immediately drawing everyone's attention.

Though quiet, the sound was strikingly prominent at that moment.

Instantly, the living room fell silent. Everyone turned toward the bedroom, their expressions varied as they watched the young man step out.

"What's going on? Why are you so loud?" Alex asked calmly.

He first looked at Adrianna. Feeling the weight of his gaze, she grew uneasy and lowered her head. Then Alex shifted his focus to Hawkman, who stood his ground and met Alex's eyes defiantly.

"Adrianna is right. Right now, Intergang essentially owns this territory. If you want to help the people of Kahndaq, simple adherence to the law isn't nearly enough."

"But—"

Hawkman started to argue but was cut off by Alex raising a hand.

"I understand what you're trying to say. You're worried that allowing someone to use superpowers to punish criminals will set a dangerous precedent, right?"

Hawkman hesitated but eventually nodded, letting out a heavy sigh.

"I get it. But arguing about this is pointless. Right now, our priority isn't debating procedural justice versus consequential justice; it's solving the immediate problem."

Alex's calm words brought a sense of clarity to the room. The group nodded slightly, acknowledging his point.

After a brief pause, Alex continued.

"Fortunately, I have a solution. One that can help Teth-Adam integrate better into this world and resolve Kahndaq's crisis."

"What's the plan?" Adrianna couldn't help but ask.

Alex's lips curled into a slight smile.

"It's simple. Let Teth-Adam join the Justice Society."

"Absolutely not!"

The suggestion caused an uproar. Hawkman was the first to object.

"He can't even control his powers, and he doesn't embody the most basic sense of justice. How can someone like that join the Justice Society? I won't allow it!"

"What do you mean by that?" Teth-Adam frowned.

"Am I wrong?" Hawkman retorted loudly, pointing at Adam. "You admitted yourself that your inability to cope with losing your family drove you to destroy the Ahk-Ton monarchy, plunging Kahndaq into chaos."

"And you act like losing your wife didn't affect you?" Alex interjected, his tone sharp. "You've spent all this time searching for her reincarnation. How many times have you even visited the Justice Society's headquarters?"

"I…" Hawkman was momentarily at a loss for words, unable to come up with a rebuttal.

"Besides, do you think the Ahk-Ton monarchy was virtuous? Those people secretly consorted with demons, seeking their power to dominate the world. If anything, you should be grateful that Adam killed King Ahk-Ton back then.

"And let's not forget—you're not the one recruiting for the Justice Society. Whether or not Teth-Adam joins is a decision for Batman, Hourman, and the others to make. Your objections are irrelevant."

Alex spoke casually, then turned to Black Adam.

"So, what do you think? Are you willing to join the Justice Society and become a superhero?"

Seeing the matter now pushed to him, Teth-Adam found himself at a loss for words. Having only recently been freed from his seal, he had barely begun adjusting to this new world a millennium later.

Now, being suddenly asked to join an unfamiliar organization—especially one that didn't leave a good first impression—left Teth-Adam conflicted.

Perhaps noticing Adam's hesitation, Alex patted his broad shoulder and spoke softly.

"Don't worry. The Justice Society won't force you to do anything you don't want to. You can remain in Kahndaq, and the Society will only contact you if there's a global crisis threatening peace. Most of the time, you'll have complete freedom of action.

"With the Justice Society's name behind you, everything you do in Kahndaq will be legitimized. Even if you want to eliminate every member of Intergang, you can. But I don't recommend that."

Ignoring Hawkman's darkened expression, Teth-Adam curiously asked, "Why shouldn't I? Their crimes are unforgivable."

Hearing this, Alex raised a finger.

"First, while Intergang has done terrible things, not everyone involved deserves death. For example, the scientists and technicians they've kidnapped."

Alex then raised a second finger.

"Second, the Justice Society has spies and informants planted within Intergang. If we want to dismantle their entire organization, we need to uncover all their secrets and gather intelligence first. Killing indiscriminately could harm our own allies."

Finally, Alex raised a third finger.

"Third, killing isn't a process for solving problems; it's the result of solving them. Put simply, people need to understand why they're being punished before they're punished. The process and the result are equally important."

The process Alex referred to was procedural justice, while the result was consequential justice. However, Alex wasn't about to explain such complex concepts to someone essentially a relic of a bygone era.

As long as Teth-Adam thought things through before acting, that would be enough. Besides, this universe needed an anti-hero like him to deter evildoers.

"I think I understand," Teth-Adam said thoughtfully, nodding.

Though he appeared rough and imposing, and came from a primitive society, he was far from foolish. On the contrary, after gaining the powers of Shazam, his mind had become exceptionally sharp.

Listening to Alex's words, Teth-Adam began to grasp the nature of this new world and recognize the issues with some of his recent actions.

"So, what's your answer?"

"I still need time to think about it. I haven't fully understood this world yet," Teth-Adam replied, glancing at Hawkman and the silent Doctor Fate. "And I don't know much about the Justice Society."

"Hmph," Hawkman snorted coldly, turning his head with a look of displeasure.

At that moment, a sudden explosion erupted outside the window.

A powerful shockwave caused the glass to vibrate violently, buzzing loudly. However, thanks to the magical barrier Alex had set up beforehand, the entire building remained rock solid.

The unexpected scene immediately drew everyone's attention. They quickly moved to the window to look outside, where they saw numerous members of Intergang scattered throughout the streets and alleys.

In the sky, five high-tech-looking aircraft hovered in midair. Additionally, small flying vehicles zipped through the city's airspace.

Calling them "small ships" wasn't entirely accurate. They resembled motorcycles but were equipped with anti-gravity capabilities, allowing them to hover and maneuver in a sleek and futuristic manner.

"Kryptonian technology. I thought we'd wiped them out last time, but it seems some remnants remain," Hawkman muttered through clenched fists.

"It's Intergang!" Adrianna exclaimed, her eyes widening at the sight.

"It seems the magic left here by Mr. Crow has prevented Intergang from locating us. Since they couldn't find us, they've decided to rip off the mask and go on a rampage," Doctor Fate said, rising to his feet.

Teth-Adam, however, didn't say a word. Instead, he leaped forward, crashing through the wall and window with a forceful stomp. Like a cannonball, he launched himself into the fray.
