American Tax Officer

Chapter 257: The Dilemma David Faces_2

...

At 8 p.m., David was frying a steak in his apartment when the doorbell rang, forcing him to turn off the stove and go to the door.

There was a smart panel by the door, which could open the main entrance of the apartment building below and also show the visitor through a camera.

David immediately switched on the camera and saw it was none other than Selina, who had already visited once before.

After a moment of thought, David pressed the button to open the entrance downstairs and then opened his door.

A few minutes later, a ding from the elevator announced Selina's arrival as she walked out and said, "Director David, I hope I'm not disturbing you?"

"Of course not, it's only eight o'clock, come in and we'll talk," he replied.

After entering, Selina caught the rich scent of the steak and commented, "Haven't had dinner yet, Director David?"

"Yes, frying steak. Would you like some?"

"No, thanks."

Selina sat down on the couch.

"Would you like something to drink then?"

"Just a glass of water, please."

Soon enough, David brought her a glass of water and then sat down opposite her.

Having just finished freshening up, David was wearing a bathrobe, his robust chest muscles slightly exposed. Selina couldn't help but glance at them a couple of times before picking up the glass and taking a sip.

"So Selina, what brings you here?"

David seemed not to notice her momentary distraction and asked casually.

Selina set down her glass, collected her thoughts, and spoke, "I heard that Freemasonry has personally entered the fray against you and they're even trying to keep you from advancing to the central office?"

"You're well-informed," he acknowledged.

"Bellamy Hardy, Brown Soros, they were once your defeated subordinates, but now Freemasonry has maneuvered them into central office. It's clear they aim to support these two to restrain you. Director David, you must be careful about this."

"Thank you for the warning. I will be."

Seeing David's calm demeanor made Selina momentarily at a loss for words.

She had thought that David would be furious upon learning this news.

After all, over the past few months, I had disciplined various criminals, establishing prestige for the Taxation Bureau, and even launched tax inspections on Hollywood, handling every matter with finesse.

And yet Brown Soros and Bellamy Hardy, these two who used to live in my shadow, were moved to central office before me. Is that fair?

Unexpectedly, David not only lacked any sign of anger but seemed to be at peace with the situation, which she found incomprehensible.

"Anything else?" he inquired.

Selina paused to organize her thoughts, then asked, "Director David, may I ask you a question?"

"Speak," he said.

"Do you aspire to further your career, or are you content with where you are now?"

"Why do you ask?"

"No particular reason. If you're content with where you are, then there's no point in continuing this conversation."

"Go on," he encouraged.

Relieved by his response, Selina could see that David indeed was not content with the status quo. She continued, "The Hollywood tax audit is wrapping up, and you've handled it impeccably, garnering praise from high-level officials and even the White House."

"However, this has also planted a seed of expectation. Everyone now has even higher hopes for you."

"This means that your future work can't fall short of your Hollywood tax audit standards—it doesn't have to surpass it, but it certainly cannot be less."

"If it falls short, once or twice might not be an issue, but over time, the favor of both the central office and the White House will gradually wane."

"And now you know, messing with Hollywood has affected so many people's interests, it even drew Freemasonry out against you."

"If you wish to maintain the level of the Hollywood tax audit, your path will inevitably continue to offend the Jewish People or other forces. For you, it might as well be like dancing on a tightrope!"

After hearing this, David's brows furrowed slightly.

Although he was well aware that Selina had been trying to recruit him to her side against Freemasonry, he had to admit her words made sense.

It was like someone who had been admitted to Tsinghua University; people around them would naturally raise their expectations following their initial surprise.

If that person were to reapply and fail, the people around would surely be disappointed.

His handling of the Hollywood tax audit had won unanimous applause from the higher-ups and even the White House.

If he could not maintain this level of performance and tax revenue in the future, the higher-ups would eventually grow disappointed and lose their favor.

And to maintain such standards, merely catching criminals would not suffice.

These criminals could never yield tax revenue in the tens or hundreds of billions, like the major film studios could.

That meant he would need to target capital.

In America, those who control capital are either the Jewish People, entities like the Ansa Group, the Illuminati, Freemasonry, or other major families.

Touching the interests of any of these parties came with great risk.
