American Tax Officer

Chapter 262: The Head of the Kennedy Family

"Director David is making a joke, with your recent high profile in Los Angeles, how would you have the time to worry about a small fry like me?"

"Mr. Lawson, you are the Senator candidate for Nevada State, if you get elected in this year's midterm elections, you'll join the ranks of the most powerful people in this country, so you're no small fry."

"That still requires getting elected."

Lawson replied with a laugh, then shifted the conversation, "Let's not talk about this anymore, let's discuss the purpose of your meeting with me today, Director David."

"It's quite simple, and it also pertains to this year's midterm elections. I want to ask you in person, Mr. Lawson, how confident are you about winning the election?"

Lawson paused before responding, "About fifty percent, I guess."

"Fifty percent is somewhat low. How about this, Mr. Lawson, I can lend you a hand. Although I can't guarantee a hundred percent that you'll get elected, I believe I can add another thirty to forty percent to your chances."

"Oh? How so?"

"Remember how we dealt with Stevenson last time?"

Upon hearing this, Lawson immediately understood.

Last time, it was because David provided him with blackmail material on Stevenson that he was able to harshly criticize Stevenson on television, eventually leading to Stevenson being ousted from his Governor's seat.

By David's current implication, he could get his hands on dirt regarding Lawson's rivals, using it to attack them and bring down their approval ratings, naturally increasing his own chances of winning.

However, they had targeted Stevenson last time because he had a grudge against David, prompting David to act.

Now, considering none of the other Senate candidates held a grudge against David, why would he go after them?

And why would he help Lawson in such a manner?

To clarify this, Lawson pushed aside his thoughts and asked, "Director David, what do you expect in return for helping me?"

"You are aware of how those Phipps' Congress members criticized the Black Tax Bill last time. If I help you get elected as Senator, perhaps I can prevent such incidents from happening. Of course, besides that, should you be elected, I may need your assistance in many areas in the future."

Upon hearing this, Lawson's demeanour did not show eagerness but rather a hint of faint worry.

He certainly knew that if David was willing to help him, his chances of becoming a Senator would greatly increase.

However, what concerned him was the matter of Stevenson.

He was aware that Stevenson had obtained the Senator candidacy qualification for New York State, but when he first heard the news, it gave him quite a scare.

Logically, a former Governor mired in scandal couldn't be whitewashed and receive a Senator candidacy qualification for New York State so quickly.

But Stevenson had managed to do just that.

To understand this, Lawson had spent a great deal of effort and finally discovered that Stevenson had the backing of a super financial consortium like Morgan Datong.

It was foreseeable that if Stevenson succeeded in becoming a Senator, David, as the instigator responsible for killing his son and causing him to lose his Governor's seat, would undoubtedly face furious retaliation.

If Lawson continued to be in the same boat as David, he would definitely be implicated.

He had been unaware of the connection between Stevenson and Morgan Datong before. Now that he knew, Lawson naturally did not want to have a direct confrontation with such a financial giant.

But before he could refuse, David spoke up again, "Mr. Lawson, our last collaboration was quite enjoyable, wasn't it?"

Lawson's expression gradually became solemn as he detected the deeper meaning in David's words.

"Mr. Lawson, there's a saying, 'If you are not at the table, you may end up on the menu.' So you should think this over carefully."

If David's previous remarks were suggestive, this statement was quite overt.

It clearly indicated to Lawson: if you wish to be a hunter, I will help you become one; if you don't want to be a hunter, I have the means to make you the prey!

Lawson obviously understood and, after weighing the pros and cons, he finally grinded his teeth and said, "If that's the case, then I am willing to sit at the table!"

If he rejected David's proposal, given David's character, he would very likely approach Lawson's rivals with the same offer.

Subsequently, the one ending up embroiled in a scandal on the menu could very well be him.

"That's a wise decision, Mr. Lawson. Pleasure doing business with you."

David extended his right hand, and Lawson, with a sense of resignation, shook it.

In the following time, David learned more about Lawson's rivals, their details and situation, until at 11 o'clock, he received a notice from the CIA and left.

Brunan Communication Company, located in the heart of the downtown district.

It was a company with a military background, primarily engaged in communications and satellite-related businesses.

According to CIA records, they had been tracking a Mossad spy who they believed might be hiding there for several months.

By the time David and his team arrived, it was already 11:40 AM. After waiting for about 20 minutes until the lunch hour at 12 PM, hordes of employees began exiting the building in groups.
