Anomalous Creatures

Chapter 26: Reconnecting

Kevin's life had suddenly acquired two unprecedented tenants of different races. At first, he thought his life would be completely turned upside down, bidding farewell to the mundane life of a commoner concerned with daily meals and provisions, and embracing a martial world where he would fight with armed police officers or superheroes every now and then, dressed in white clothes as snow, moving as swiftly as the wind. However, after three or four days, he found that his days were still the same: the two girls in his house barely changed any aspect of his daily routine.

Lily's daily life was like this: sleep, eat, eat, eat, fight with Weilili, and go back to her room to write (remember, this girl is also supposed to be a writer). In short, the werewolf girl's life was simple yet meaningful, and she was quite content with it.

Weilili's daily life, on the other hand, was even more colorful: sleep, eat, fight with Lily, go out to look for a job, lose the job, look for another job, lose it again, and so on... Honestly, her bad luck was so evident that even Kevin couldn't stand to watch. Can you believe she changed three jobs in three days? Kevin was amazed at Weilili's efficiency in finding jobs; she managed to find one right away in this unfamiliar place. On the other hand, he was also astonished by the degree of this vampire's bad luck: so far, the longest Weilili had held a job was for no more than three hours...

Unfortunately, Kevin hadn't witnessed the girl's misfortunes firsthand. Every time he saw Weilili come back dejectedly, he knew she had messed things up again. If he had the chance, he really should have followed her to see how she lost her job.

The lives of these two superheroines were like this, each with their own flaws, but nothing beyond Kevin's familiar daily scope. Weilili didn't have the "predatory habit" of flying out at midnight to find someone to suck blood, and Lily wouldn't howl at the moon in the middle of the night and transform into a werewolf to catch rabbits in the wild. They lived like ordinary humans, and it was said that they had been like this since birth. This disappointed Kevin to some extent, but he was also relieved: he didn't have to worry about fighting with armed police officers or superheroes...

The shadow brought by that strange dream a few days ago seemed to have disappeared. Besides the slight unease when he thought about it, Kevin had temporarily put it behind him. Now, he was patiently waiting for the return of that abnormal goddess while gradually getting familiar with the daily habits of the two new tenants in his house.

Lily was busy getting dressed and picking out clothes early in the morning, looking like she was about to go out. This werewolf girl was sometimes ditzy, but her living habits were the same as those of ordinary human girls. Except for the sudden appearance of the word "roll" that would scare her into immediately going on all fours, she was quite normal. Seeing her walking around the living room in high spirits, Kevin couldn't help but feel curious: "Are you going out?"

"Uhm, I have a patient to see," Lily tidied her clothes in front of the TV screen, chatting rapidly like machine-gun fire, "Living in this city seems to be going smoothly. Writing goes smoothly, renting a house goes smoothly, and even getting my first patient goes smoothly..."

Weilili was busy tidying up the house nearby and looked up curiously when she heard this. "You? Are you a doctor?"

Kevin then remembered that Weilili didn't know about Lily's job: she wasn't present when Lily introduced herself, and the two of them barely had any interest in getting to know each other after living together reluctantly. So he pointed at the werewolf girl and explained on her behalf, "Lily is a wandering veterinarian."

The werewolf girl didn't know what came over her, but she suddenly faced Weilili and puffed out her chest with pride. If she were in her werewolf form, her tail would have been wagging so fast it would have left a blur. "I have a license! I'm an experienced veterinarian with over a decade of experience, and I'm also a professional writer. I've been contributing to Shen Bao since the Republic of China era. Do you know Zhou Shuren? I had lively conversations with him, 0w0!"

Kevin was studying a magazine and had only casually spoken a few words to Lily earlier, but he was so shocked by her statement that he fell off the sofa. "What did you say?!"

"I'm professional," Lily looked at Kevin strangely, as if thinking he was overreacting. "I've been living in human society and making a living by writing. Being a professional veterinarian is only a recent thing. I used to treat animals, but it wasn't my main occupation at that time."

"I'm not talking about that," Kevin stared blankly at the werewolf girl, whom he had always considered a pure idiot and therefore didn't take seriously. "You said during the Republic of China era..."

"Contributing to Shen Bao, so people in the Republic of China didn't read newspapers or what?" Lily nodded. "I've already said that I've lived... for many years anyway. You haven't forgotten, have you?"

Kevin was stunned into silence and finally became more acutely aware of how different these non-human creatures were from humans. Even this werewolf girl, who seemed to have a hole in her head, could be shocking when talking about her past experiences!

He had indeed heard Lily and Weilili talk about some of their life experiences before, but he hadn't paid much attention to it at the time. Those distant events seemed more like legends to Kevin, and the more recent situations didn't make much of an impression on him. Now, with Lily's statement, Kevin finally understood in the most direct way what was meant by a sense of history...

Seeing Kevin's startled reaction to Lily's words, Weilili, a vampire girl with far more experience than Lily, was naturally upset. She crossed her arms, pushed Lily aside, and said with a leisurely tone, "You're just a hairless girl. Have you ever fought with Achilles? Did you kick Octavian into the moat? Did you kick Caesar into the moat? Did you kick Yan Emperor… Oh, I haven't either. Moats weren't a thing back then… By the way, Huang Emperor was a talented person!"

Kevin sighed deeply, feeling that the magazine in his hand was no longer worth reading: what was happening in front of him was clearly more entertaining than any magazine!

Lily dismissed Weilili with a scornful glance and said, "What's the use of those experiences? Can you make money by fighting with Achilles? Can you make money by kicking Octavian into the moat? Can you make money by kicking Caesar into the moat?"

"Why not! I charged for it back then!"

"Where's the money then?"

"… Let's change the subject."

Kevin wiped the cold sweat on his forehead, thinking to himself that what he had heard in the living room today must not be leaked out. Any of these statements would be enough to make the archaeological community worldwide tremble for half a year! Just how many awe-inspiring things had this seemingly useless vampire girl done back then? And how much of human history is reliable nowadays?

Weilili's biggest weakness was her extremely bad luck with money, a point that even the dim-witted Lily could snarkily criticize. Defeated in an area where she couldn't refute, the vampire girl felt disheartened and continued to bury her head in housework: it was her own initiative. Weilili was self-aware; she knew that with her luck, she probably wouldn't have a chance to repay the money in the short term, so she actively offered to do housework in exchange for meals and rent.

Kevin didn't expect a senior vampire to have such upright values. At first, he felt a little apprehensive, but after repeatedly confirming that Weilili was indeed thinking like this, he was happy to accept it: it was like hiring a maid. How expensive it was to hire a maid these days, especially one who was young and pretty, and could easily turn into the mistress of the house without caution, and then you'd have to hire another maid for her… Oh, that's thinking too much.

Lily happily left the house, and Kevin didn't have time to ask her how she had successfully started her veterinary work in an unfamiliar place. However, he could guess the basics: most likely, she had inquired about the situation from local stray dogs. He had bumped into this weird scene several times when he went out these two days—Lily squatting by the roadside, chatting seriously with local stray dogs, sometimes even in the exact same squatting position, as if they were sisters… With Lily's outstanding talent, being a veterinarian was not just starting ahead of the pack; she had started at the finish line…

Just as Kevin was about to continue reading the magazine in his hand, which was already almost crumpled, a life-threatening cell phone ringtone suddenly sounded from the armrest of the nearby sofa.

As if having a psychological sense, Kevin shuddered all over the instant the phone rang, then leaped up and grabbed the phone. A line of numbers appeared on the screen:

00000012345

The mentally unstable "goddess" had been missing for several days and had finally appeared.
