Anomalous Creatures

Chapter 28: High Technology!

Kevin curiously examined the small silver-white device in his hand, feeling excited yet puzzled at the same time.

This device was only palm-sized, with a silvery-white metallic sheen. However, it didn't feel cold when held, but rather warm to the touch, unlike the common metallic materials on Earth. The device was perfectly hexagonal in shape, with the thickest part being just a few centimeters. A blue-white light flowed gently across its surface, as if it were a living thing breathing. Kevin curiously ran his fingers over the surface of the "metal plate," causing the hexagonal area in the center to light up immediately, followed by a holographic image suddenly appearing in the air, startling him!

Kevin almost threw away his first month's labor insurance with shock. He clutched the metal plate and stared fixedly at the holographic image hovering above it: The image showed a deep blue cross emblem composed of four crystals slowly rotating, with a chaotic black background. Below the projection was a line of Chinese characters: "Temporal and Spatial Administration Bureau - Node en35 - World az655 - Universal Data Terminal. Current operator has passed permission authentication. Device is in standby mode."

"Fully Chinese interface, user-friendly operation, even beginners can master it proficiently," Raven 12345 raised a finger and pointed at the "data terminal" in Kevin's hand, drawing his attention. "Here are your work instructions, introductions to the Empire's Temporal and Spatial Administration Bureau, as well as basic intelligence about the Empire. Additionally, there's information about the Macro World, temporal and spatial routes, world gate codes, authorization processes, material distribution lists, support request agreements, and other things you need to learn. It would be too troublesome for me to explain all this to you, so it's better for you to read it yourself. Learn slowly, and after memorizing all these materials... Well, you should have completed the first phase of your internship and can then move on to the second phase..."

Kevin immediately felt pessimistic about his future life: Oh, for heaven's sake, he had finally graduated from school, but how did he suddenly find himself back in student life again?!

"What is this? And how do I use it?" Kevin temporarily set aside his thoughts about the possible miserable learning life ahead and curiously pointed at the blue cross emblem on the holographic image. Although he didn't know what it was, he felt that it must be significant, as he often saw such blue emblems in Raven 12345's mansion, and even on some magical servants. He reached out and poked at the holographic image twice, only to find his fingers passing directly through the screen: It wasn't like he imagined, where he could control it by touching the image.

Raven 12345's expression suddenly became extremely serious, and this serious look even scared Kevin: He couldn't imagine that this abnormal "goddess" who was careless would have such a solemn moment. Raven 12345 stared at Kevin's eyes, as if to pierce his thoughts directly into the latter's brain: "This is the Xiling military emblem, the symbol of the empire, the mark of Xiling civilization, it represents the empire. You are a newcomer now, and you probably can't understand the meaning of this mark. You just need to remember that it is of extraordinary significance. In the entire void, countless races survive under the protection of this emblem, and countless warriors fight under the guidance of this military emblem." Kevin listened in a daze, and Raven patted his forehead when he saw this: "Hey, why am I telling you this so early. Anyway, remember, no matter how dangerous the place is, no matter how complicated the situation is, as long as you see this emblem, you will see your family, understand?" Kevin understood this time and nodded vigorously: "Then how should this be used?" "Put your hand on any edge and control it with your mind. It will automatically judge your confirmation command and there will be no wrong operation," Raven instructed Kevin on how to start the small device. "Of course, you may need to adapt for a while at the beginning. After all, its reaction speed is very fast, and its intelligence is not much worse than yours, so it will automatically help you do some things. Sometimes you will mistakenly think that you have made a mistake, but it's okay. Here, try to start the main system and tell it that you are a rookie." Kevin listened with his eyes wide open, and a sentence kept circling in his mind: Oh my god, this is so high-tech! "Didn't you say that the Xiling Apostle is a god? How come the god uses such high-tech stuff... Gods are also technological?" Kevin muttered while unskillfully concentrating on communicating with the "metal plate" in his hand. Raven 12345 answered his question: "Is there a difference between technology and magic? The Xiling God System has been developing two routes at the same time since the beginning. Whatever is useful is used. They are all tools to control the world. If this thing in your hand is thrown into the hands of other uncivilized civilizations, it will be a divine weapon. But then again, I am not very good at this kind of technological products. I prefer mysterious creations. It's a pity that you can't use that thing." Kevin didn't care to listen to what Raven 12345 said, because he had successfully started the small data terminal! The holographic projection quickly refreshed a series of images, which looked chaotic, but Kevin did not feel that he could not keep up with the rhythm or understand them: the refresh speed and switching method of these images perfectly matched his understanding. It seemed that this data terminal could scan the human brain and then push new information according to the brain's immediate working status. Kevin's eyes moved quickly on the holographic image. The most important information he needed was always in the center of his vision. Whenever he wanted to know something new, he didn't even need to give instructions deliberately. The images on the holographic image would switch accordingly, allowing him to always obtain new information in his most efficient way. Kevin thought at first that he might not be able to control such advanced equipment, but soon he realized one thing: for a civilization that is so powerful that it can walk sideways in the multiverse, it is not a problem to make a simple and easy-to-use gadget, just like humans can make a feeder that even chimpanzees and pet dogs can use. When technology reaches perfection, it becomes easier to use, and complex things will be encapsulated in places that users cannot see.

To give a simple example, Kevin is sure that if he disassembles this small device in his hand, no one on earth will be able to put it back together...

"What does this mean by requesting support?" Kevin suddenly saw a very interesting word in a series of rapidly updated data. Without him giving any instructions, this item that aroused his curiosity automatically stopped in the center of his vision, and then a large number of pictures and video information matching it appeared on the holographic image: various images that looked like weapons and equipment, soldiers in formation, and charts that were temporarily incomprehensible, neatly arranged in front of him, but all of the above things were gray.

"Do you think the Inquisitor is a lone ranger? Is it all his job to take care of the abnormal creatures that eat at home?" Raven 12345 shrugged. "You will know when you become a regular employee. The work that the Inquisitor has to deal with is very complicated. What if I send you to Centauri to quell the rebellion? What if I send you to the Scorpio Nebula for military mediation? At this time, requesting support and armed agreements will come in handy. You can choose these things when you are about to be beaten to death. Of course, they all require corresponding authority, and authority requires various strict assessments. We can't give things that kill people to a weak-minded recruit, although those things are basically harmless civilian goods in our eyes... Well, civilian goods thrown on your planet are almost enough to withstand four or five ice ages." Kevin broke out in a cold sweat. Although he had not had time to finish reading the two documents "Inquisitor's Notes" and "Outline of the Space-Time Administration Bureau", he heard something very incredible from Raven 12345's words... This job seems to be fatal! Kevin opened his mouth: "I'm..."

"I can't resign," Raven 12345 laughed, "Even if you die, your soul is still hanging in my attendance sheet. I'll give you a new body and you'll have to continue working. It's not easy for me to recruit new employees. You still want to run away?"

Kevin: "..."

"Don't look like that," Raven 12345 teleported to Kevin's side in an instant, startled the latter and patted his shoulder, "I never bluff people, you will soon find out that this is an opportunity that ordinary people can't ask for. As long as you don't do stupid things, you can basically live to... well, anyway, it's quite a long time. After all, the prosecutor is not a military personnel, there are not so many battles for you auxiliary police all day long."

Kevin wanted to speak several times, but was choked back by this aura-filled white-haired witch. In the end, he could only pull the corner of his mouth and put the data terminal into his pocket: there are too many things to see, and it is obviously unrealistic to see them here. He decided to study them slowly after returning home.

"Then let's talk about the nightmare," Kevin sat down on the chair resignedly, "I think you are hiding something from me. I am honest, but that doesn't mean you can bully me at will. At least tell me more, so I can go back and sleep peacefully." Raven 12345 glanced at Kevin, and finally sighed helplessly: "Okay, okay, you are also stubborn, so I will pick out some things that I can tell you."
