Chapter 34: The Little Secret of the Demihuman Girl
Although the five-digit White-haired Witch didn't seem very reliable, she never failed to deliver on her promises. Kevin finally received the activity funds allocated to him by the organization. Looking at the extra digits on his bank card, tears almost welled up in his eyes: What great benefits! If Raven 12345 had slapped this string of zeros in his face back then, he would have signed the contract more happily than anything else!
Kevin realized one thing: He must learn to detach himself from the mindset of an ordinary Joe and view the monster organization called the "Temporal and Spatial Administration Bureau" from a higher perspective. Currency in the mortal world was probably just a tool for action for this organization, and it was supplied in unlimited quantities. Kevin considered holding up his bank card and asking Raven 12345 to add a few more zeros, but in the end, he felt embarrassed to do so...
Regardless, the activity funds were secured, and incidentally, they also covered Michelle's meals for at least two years. Ever since the useless vampire moved in, Kevin had essentially been supporting her for free. He joked about hiring her as a housekeeper to save on electricity bills and use it to offset the rent, but most of it was just a joke. As an ordinary Joe, Kevin couldn't possibly afford such luxury. He was just finding an excuse to make both him and Michelle feel at ease about this mooching situation. But now that wasn't an issue anymore. The five-digit White-haired Witch had allocated funds enough for three people to travel around the world for activities, and they were sent to pick someone up in the UK...
On the way to Capital International Airport, Michelle couldn't help but mention more than once, "Landlord, do you think the Temporal and Spatial Administration Bureau is still hiring? I could go help them with refrigeration!"
After boarding the plane, Michelle was still obsessing over this question. Kevin couldn't help but say, "Come on, this requires talent, you know. I'm at least a reserve civil servant and a candidate for the Saint's Son. You think it's that easy to become one? Besides, the White-haired Witch's house is warm in winter and cool in summer. A goddess like her, I doubt she even needs air conditioning..."
Michelle, the vampire girl, had been responsible for cooling the entire house these two days, saving electricity while the other three members of the household had already come to treat her like an air conditioner by default.
The vampire girl pouted and then leaned against the airplane window, curiously watching the ground crew bustling about while murmuring, "Is it okay to leave 'Roll' at home?"
"It's fine, it's sturdy," Kevin wasn't worried at all. This time, the whole family was going out together, and naturally, cats couldn't be taken on the plane. It wasn't practical to arrange international shipping for the creature either, so he just left "Roll" at home and entrusted it to a neighbor for care. But in reality, Kevin was quite sure that the clever creature was more likely to slip out of someone else's house the next day to fend for itself: it had a criminal record. "Back in the day, with a body weight of less than ten pounds, it dominated all the cat and dog dens on the entire street. Its wild survival skills were stronger than mine. When I first adopted it two years ago, I worried every time I left home, but later, I stopped worrying: after leaving it outside for a month, the little guy came back half a pound heavier..."
"Landlord, what do you think England is like? I've never been there before," Lily asked curiously while peering out the window in a quadrupedal position, sitting opposite Kevin.
This time, with ample "activity funds," Kevin displayed a luxurious aura and directly purchased first-class seats. As a result, the space around the trio was spacious, and there were partitions between them and other passengers. Lily, who couldn't sit still, had been twisting and turning for most of the day before the plane took off. Of course, having ample funds was one reason for buying first-class seats, but more importantly, the privacy space in first-class was better. Kevin knew he was with two individuals of extremely special racial backgrounds. Although theoretically, these two experienced female superheroes wouldn't let him down, out of the caution of an ordinary person, he wanted to keep these two as far away from ordinary people as possible during the trip, making it easier to discuss some "confidential topics."
"How would I know? I've never been there either," Kevin shrugged and turned to Michelle. "By the way, just to confirm again, you have been to England, right? We'll rely solely on you as our guide over there. You're supposed to speak English..."
"Of course, I value my reputation and wouldn't speak nonsense," Michelle chest-thumped. "I've traveled around the world. I knew the Earth was round back in the days when your humans were still eating raw meat. Where haven't I been? I even worked in the Vatican..."
Kevin quickly coughed twice. "Cough, cough. Let's not mention the days of scrounging for a meal in the church. I wonder what your fellow clansmen would think of your glorious experiences."
"Them? I haven't seen them for centuries. Most of them are stubborn fools, and the few smart ones are even better at hiding than I am," Michelle shrugged. "Our clan is very loose. Even during its heyday, it was a scattered mess. Otherwise, how could it have been marginalized to such an extent today? Alas, let's not mention the past. It brings a headache of melancholy. How did I live such a confused life?"
Kevin chuckled. "You know you're confused. Alright, just know that you speak English and know the way. We won't need to find a guide. We can't ask anyone else for help with our matters. That Raven said that in order to train the new employees' handling abilities, they wouldn't even give us a map..."
Michelle confidently patted her chest. "Don't worry, don't worry. Back in the day, Arthur Pendragon couldn't even argue with me. I lived there for over 130 years and spoke English like a native."
Kevin listened in a daze, feeling something was off, but Michelle's statement was so packed with information that it didn't give anyone a chance to analyze it carefully. So in the end, he just nodded and didn't delve into the issue further.
After a while, seeing that Lily still had no intention of settling down, Kevin found a topic to divert the werewolf girl's attention. "There's a question I've been wanting to ask. How do you handle your identities when living in the human world? Especially you, Lily. How did you manage it?"
This question had bugged Kevin for days: While Michelle could still be considered wise with age, how did Lily, this dimwit, manage her identity in modern society? She claimed to have been hopping around the world since the Republic of China era and was already a famous literary young lady in Shanghai when the "Shen Bao" newspaper was still around. It's been nearly a hundred years since then, and the form of citizenship proof has changed countless times. How could Lily, this dimwit, be lounging around and thriving in the human world, and seemingly doing better than Michelle? It was truly curious.
Upon hearing this, Lily squatted down properly in her seat, and it seemed like a pair of pointed ears on her head trembled. "It's not difficult at all. I witnessed your social order being established from scratch. Living in human society, I know it inside out, no big deal."
Saying this, Lily suddenly looked up cleverly, and her usually unreliable brain finally had a moment of clarity. "Why especially me? Do you think I'm stupid?"
Kevin quickly shook his head, while Michelle turned her face away with an expression of not wanting to look. Lily, however, corrected him seriously. "I know you always think I'm not very smart. My six senses are sharp, I'm just lazy to argue with you. It's a matter of attitude towards life. Landlord, let me tell you, don't look at me as someone who doesn't like to use my brain usually, but I have a lot of skills behind the scenes! I know a lot of people, like... well, most of them are dead, so I won't mention it. Anyway, I'm very capable!"
Kevin wiped the cold sweat on his forehead. His instinct told him that Lily might have just listed a bunch of terrifying names, many of which could be forbidden topics. Fortunately, the werewolf girl shut up early. Being with these two female superheroes at home brought daily surprises. They mentioned historical celebrities with the same casualness as talking about Mr. Zhao down the street, without considering how shaken their audience's liver might be.
At this moment, the plane's takeoff preparations were finally completed, and a flight attendant began to remind passengers to sit down properly in their seats and fasten their seat belts. Lily, who had been fussing around for half a day, also calmed down and deftly fastened her seat belt. Then, she and Kevin simultaneously discovered a fact that left them speechless: Michelle seemed to be shivering...
Usually, she always had a steady demeanor, at least with some vampire dignity. But now, upon hearing the announcement that the plane was about to take off, her face began to change, and she didn't even seem to understand how to use the seat belt. Kevin helped Michelle buckle up and couldn't help but ask, "Are you afraid of flying? You have wings yourself!"
"I've never ridden in one of these before..." Michelle said weakly.
Kevin was quite surprised: This vampire, who had squatted and watched the construction of the Great Pyramid of Khufu from start to finish, a vampire who was incredibly knowledgeable and experienced, had never flown on a plane?
Michelle looked like she was about to cry. "I couldn't afford the airplane ticket..."
Kevin: "..."
