Anomalous Creatures

Chapter 51: The Underground Cave

Kevin had no idea what kind of chaotic state those paranormal enthusiasts were in, but just thinking about their strange equipment gave him a rough idea. Weilili was even more straightforward in her evaluation: "Over there? It's basically a gathering of charlatan (lit. river-lake swindlers, here meaning fraudsters or charlatans), except for Nan Gong and that monk, who actually have something real in their hands."

Lily got down on all fours and sniffed left and right, struggling for over ten seconds before lifting her head: "Someone has been here before."

"With so many people being attracted to this castle these days, it's normal for anyone to have been here," Kevin didn't pay much attention and carefully walked towards the direction of the chapel. "This sound is creepy, are you sure everything's alright, Weilili?"

"It's fine, the aura of the undead is still suppressed underground," Weilili slightly released some of her power, her eyes glowing faintly red in the darkness of the night. "Listen, the wind seems to have died down."

Kevin swallowed hard. The wind and eerie howls coming from the direction of the chapel were indeed gradually weakening, but this had already successfully created an unsettling atmosphere. He couldn't sense any so-called aura of the undead; in his eyes, this place was already haunted by ghosts.

The wooden door of the chapel had completely rotten away, but a pile of collapsed stone slabs blocked the entrance to this stone house. Kevin carefully approached and found a gap among the rubble blocking the door. Peering through the gap, he saw only darkness inside. The intermittent wind and the chaotic sounds of people shouting and horses neighing indeed came from inside this stone house. Because there were many cracks around the stone house, the strange sounds coming from inside were hardly obstructed, no wonder they could be heard throughout the entire castle.

Kevin licked his finger and carefully stuck it into the gap in the rubble, nodding professionally: "Hmm, no wind."

"Duh, with such a racket, if there were really any wind, it would have smeared your face with sand when you leaned in just now," Weilili pushed Kevin aside and waved at Lily, "Big Dog, come and move this stuff away."

Kevin immediately felt that this wasn't right: "Hey, wait, doesn't this count as disrespect to the deceased?"

"What deceased? I've beaten real zombies before, the Pharaoh's Guard is just like that. Big Dog, go ahead!"

"Call me Big Dog again and see if I won't bite you four times in a second!" Lily couldn't bear the increasingly rude vampire any longer and jumped up in protest. However, after protesting, she got back to work: she was the strongest here, and it was really up to her to move this huge pile of stones.

And as Lily started to throw the first large stone slab aside, the strange sounds coming from inside the chapel suddenly ceased.

"It's silent!" Kevin exclaimed. "Hey, I think I heard something rustling inside, did you hear that?"

Weilili tilted her head to listen to the sounds inside the chapel and waved at Lily, signaling: "Ignore it and keep moving."

"Hey, huff!" Lily bent down and picked up a huge boulder that looked like it weighed at least half a ton. She threw it several meters away without even breaking a sweat, handling it as easily as if it were a foam model. Kevin kept a distance of over two meters from the incredibly strong werewolf, fearing that she might accidentally throw a rock and kill him if she missed her mark. He watched in amazement and said, "If only I had that kind of strength."

"It's just muscles," Weilili said, her eyelids trembling slightly as she watched Lily carry those huge rocks, but she still tried to be tough. "True power comes from wisdom. No matter how strong she is, it can't compare to my blood magic. With just one curse, I could make her lie down..."

Lily turned around, holding a large slab of stone that was almost a meter wide, and said, "Huh, keep talking."

Kevin and Weilili were standing side by side when he quickly jumped back over a meter. "Hey, don't joke around like that! There's a normal person here, okay? If you slip, I'll be flattened. If you two want to fight, do it somewhere else when there's no one around."

Lily snorted and turned back to continue moving the rocks. The pile of rubble blocking the entrance to the chapel was quickly cleared by her. With the last large slab of stone kicked aside by the werewolf girl, the dark entrance to the chapel was wide open before the three of them.

"Landlord, my shoe is broken," Lily said, lifting her leg and pointing at her foot. Kevin looked and saw that the front of her white sneakers had a huge rip, with five delicately white toes wiggling inside the gap. Remember, the last slab of stone was kicked aside by this girl... Other books wouldn't definitely write this detail...

"Uh, I'll buy you a new pair. Consider it a work expense," Kevin wiped the sweat from his forehead, thinking how everything seemed to go wrong for him. Then, he stepped towards the dark chapel, wanting to see what was inside.

To be honest, Kevin was still a bit uneasy. Even if someone were very brave, they wouldn't dare to enter a sealed stone chamber that was making "ghostly sounds" just a few minutes ago. But now, with Weilili, a vampire who could sense the undead, ensuring their safety, and Lily, a top-notch fighter, guarding them, he mustered up his courage. Not to mention, he still had some manly pride. If he were to cower now, he feared he would be looked down upon by the two superwomen beside him.

Although the door of the chapel was blocked by collapsed stones, the chapel itself was full of cracks and collapses, basically in a state of being drafty on all sides. When Kevin walked in, he didn't smell any decaying odor, only the dust smell from Lily's work earlier hitting him in the face. Weilili frowned, and a cool breeze wrapped around her, blowing away the dust around the three of them. Her every move exuded the elegance of a vampire, making Lily look at her askance and say, "So prima donna, worrying about hygiene at a time like this?"

The church was empty, with no trace of the original tables and chairs. The uneven ground was scattered with a few乱石 fragments. This small church was also in the typical European classical castle style, with narrow and high windows. Now, those windows had turned into long rectangular holes, and the dim moonlight shone through the window holes into the church, making everything around look even more eerie.

"The moon is out again..." Lily looked up and stared absentmindedly at the brightest window hole. "Landlord, I want to let out a good howl..."

Kevin: "..."

What's wrong with this idiot!

With his newly acquired "superpower," Kevin could see everything in the small church clearly. However, the stone house was completely transparent, and he didn't find anything special. There were no floating will-o'-the-wisps, no swaying ancient knights, and no black leather magic books glowing on the ground that clearly foretold nothing good. The strange sounds had ended before he came in, and now the small church looked like an ordinary abandoned hut.

However, Lily crouched down and sniffed. "Landlord, there's also the scent of a living person here."

Weilili walked straight to one corner of the chapel and waved her hand in the air. A blood-red mist flew towards a small stone slab in the corner. A violent corrosion sound of "hissing" came, and the hard stone was corroded into dust in the blink of an eye, revealing a small hole under the slab. "He ran away from here, the person pretending to be a ghost."

"A person? You mean the haunting here is man-made? You knew about it all along?" Kevin looked at Weilili in surprise. "Why didn't you say anything just now?"

"I sensed that there was a living person hiding here. I originally wanted to see what he was trying to do here, but I didn't expect him to be just pretending to be a ghost," Weilili shrugged. "He slipped away when Lily started moving the rocks. It's a pity that big dog claims to have keen senses. You didn't notice a human slipping away under your nose."

Lily stubbornly persisted, "I was concentrated on moving rocks! I didn't notice!"

Kevin ignored the daily squabble between these two girls and came to the dark hole. "Are we going to go down there?"

"If you want to wait up here, that's fine too," Weilili looked at the hole with a nonchalant expression. "Although I feel that he's just an ordinary person, after all, the situation down there is unknown, and there might be danger."

With Weilili saying that, Kevin's temper actually flared up. He was a man destined to become the King of Babysitters. In the future, he might have to take care of countless strange tenants. How could he be intimidated by an ordinary person who made a big fuss by pretending to be a ghost in an ancient castle!

On the spot, he rolled up his sleeves and jumped into the pit. "Don't stop me. I'll go first... Wow!"
