Chapter 138: Chapter 126 Kumogi Finally Beats Metroid!
Wednesday, December 25, 1991
Kumogi grinned from ear to ear as he woke up. After the grueling work he had gone through yesterday, he hadn't even been able to play ZEPS, but now the long-awaited holiday had finally arrived! He had time off until January 2, 1992!
"Hehe! I'm definitely beating Metroid today!" he declared with excitement.
After quickly washing up, grabbing a light breakfast, and tidying his room, he prepared himself for a long and intense gaming session. He eagerly booted up Metroid, ready to continue where he had left off. This time, he would proceed carefully, using the guidebook's map as a reference to avoid getting lost.
Slowly but surely, he made progress, methodically checking each room and hunting for upgrades. About an hour into the game, he finally found the first major boss—Kraid! A large, reptilian creature with a green, scaly body and massive spikes protruding from its back. The creature towered over Samus in its lair deep within Brinstar.
Kumogi grinned. "Finally! My first boss fight!"
Kraid wasted no time attacking. It launched large claws and sharp projectiles from its belly while summoning smaller versions of itself to assist in battle. The room quickly became a chaotic mess of enemy fire, but Kumogi was no ordinary gamer. With expert precision, he maneuvered Samus, dodging projectiles while counterattacking with missiles.
"Take this!" he shouted as he unleashed a relentless barrage of missiles.
Because he had been farming power-ups along the way, he had plenty of ammo to spare. Kraid roared as the final missile struck its weak spot—its mouth. With a deafening explosion, the monstrous boss collapsed, and the path forward was clear.
"Hah! Too easy!" Kumogi smirked in satisfaction.
With Kraid defeated, he carefully checked the guidebook's map for hidden areas and power-ups. As he explored, he uncovered secret rooms filled with valuable upgrades—missile expansions, energy tanks, and new abilities. He acquired the High Jump Boots, allowing Samus to leap to greater heights, and the Screw Attack, which turned samus into a spinning, enemy-shredding machine while jumping. Finally, he obtained the Varia Suit, which increased Samus defense and gave Samur armor different color.
Feeling invincible with his upgraded Samus, Kumogi pressed onward. Eventually, he reached Norfair, where the second boss, Ridley, awaited him.
Ridley—a massive, purple, dragon-like beast with large wings and a menacing tail—greeted him with a fiery assault. The battle was more intense than the previous one. Ridley swooped around the room, shooting fireballs and launching energy projectiles at rapid speed.
Kumogi tightened his grip on the controller. "Alright, let's dance, you overgrown lizard!"
He utilized his upgraded arsenal, dodging Ridley's swooping attacks and returning fire with a mix of missiles and ice shots. With precise aiming, he continuously hit Ridley's weak spots, gradually whittling down the boss's health. Finally, after a relentless exchange of attacks, Ridley let out a monstrous shriek and exploded into pixels.
"Yes! Another one bites the dust!" Kumogi cheered.
With both Kraid and Ridley defeated, he returned to the main area and approached the mysterious statues representing the two fallen bosses. As he stepped forward, the statues' eyes glowed, and they crumbled, revealing the entrance to the final area—Tourian.
His heart pounded with excitement. "This is it… the final stretch!"
Tourian was a completely different environment—dark, mechanical, and filled with eerie music. Kumogi's excitement turned to tension as he encountered the terrifying Metroids—floating, jellyfish-like creatures that latched onto Samus and drained Samus energy rapidly. He quickly remembered the tip from the guidebook: use the Ice Beam to freeze them before shooting them down.
He carefully navigated the corridors, freezing and blasting Metroids as he made his way deeper into the facility. Then, after dodging countless turrets and traps, he finally arrived at the final showdown—the lair of the Mother Brain.
The grotesque, brain-like creature sat encased in a glass tank, surrounded by powerful defenses. Lethal energy rings called Rinkas swarmed the room, while automated turrets bombarded him with deadly lasers.
Kumogi gritted his teeth. "Alright, final boss time!"
He focused on taking down the Rinkas first, then systematically destroyed the turrets while dodging Mother Brain's deadly plasma beams. Once the barriers were down, he unleashed a storm of missiles at the exposed brain, each hit causing it to twitch violently.
"Almost there…!" he muttered, spamming missiles relentlessly.
Finally, with one last explosive blast, Mother Brain let out a final, eerie screech and collapsed.
But just as Kumogi was about to celebrate, the entire screen started shaking violently.
"Wait… what!?"
A countdown timer appeared—he had mere seconds to escape before the entire base exploded!
"Oh, crap! I need to run!"
He frantically guided Samus through the collapsing base, leaping over obstacles and dodging falling debris. His heart pounded as the timer ticked down—5… 4… 3… 2… Zaboru make the escape sequence time more tight so you need to fast!
Just as the last second hit, Samus made it to her spaceship and blasted off into space. The screen faded to black before displaying Samus standing facing the screen and show the ending message:
GREAT!! You fulfilled your mission. It will revive peace in space, but it may be invaded by other Metroids. Pray for true peace in space.
Kumogi exhaled, a proud smile on his face. "I did it! I finally beat Metroid!"
But as he looked at the screen, his smile wavered. Samus suddenly blip and then stood there… crying?
"What? Why is My Samus crying?" he muttered in confusion.
Then a prompt appeared: Beat the game faster next time.
His eyes widened. "Wait… there's a time limit? So this is the bad ending!?"
Kumogi actually beat the game with long time intervals! He might have taken more than 5 hours to finish it!
Despite having just finished the game, Kumogi's excitement flared up again. He had beaten Metroid, but now he had a new goal—to get the best ending. Now that he knew all the mechanics, paths, and secrets, he was confident he could clear it much faster.
He grinned as he reset the game. "Alright, time for round two! This time, I'll get the real ending!"
With renewed determination, Kumogi started from scratch, ready to conquer the game once again.
