Chapter 11: Chapter 11: The Empty No. 9 Jersey
One week later.
The morning of the practice match with Ryonan.
In front of Shohoku High School's gates.
The basketball club members had already gathered, but two people were missing—Aoi Kunisaku and Shimizu Kanon.
"That damn guy, he's late again," Akagi Takanori growled, veins bulging on his forehead as he gritted his teeth.
Kogure Kiminobu quickly tried to calm him down. "Akagi, take it easy. Aoi Kunisaku has been late for this kind of thing more than once."
Akagi Takanori snorted. "What are you saying? If he's late every time, how can we continue the matches?"
Kogure Kiminobu didn't know how to respond to that.
At that moment, Sakuragi Hanamichi proudly interjected, "I told you! That guy has no sense of time. Let's just ignore him."
"Big idiot," Rukawa Kaede said indifferently.
"What did you say?" Sakuragi Hanamichi shouted at Rukawa Kaede.
Ayako glanced at her watch and spoke helplessly. "It's already time. I didn't expect Kanon to be late too."
Just then, Ayako's phone rang.
She pulled out her phone and, seeing who it was, said, "It's Kanon's call."
Everyone turned their attention to her.
Ayako answered the call and immediately heard Shimizu Kanon's voice on the other end. "I'm really sorry, Ayako-senpai. Saku-chan is still asleep. I'll wake him up now. You all go ahead. I'll hurry and catch up with him at Ryonan High."
After hanging up, Ayako repeated what Shimizu Kanon had said to everyone.
Akagi Takanori was even angrier, clenching his fists in fury. "Damn, that jerk..."
Yasuda Yasuharu tried to calm him down. "Captain, it's fine. You should be used to Aoi Kunisaku being like this by now..."
Bang...
Before Yasuda could finish, Akagi Takanori had punched him to the ground.
Akagi Takanori gritted his teeth, holding back his anger. "Alright, let's go now."
On the other side.
At Aoi Kunisaku's house.
Shimizu Kanon arrived at Aoi Kunisaku's bedroom and shook him awake, shouting, "Aoi Kunisaku, stop sleeping! We have a match today! Get up, quick!"
Still half-asleep, Aoi Kunisaku groggily replied, "Kanon, you're so annoying! Stop waking me up."
Seeing that Aoi Kunisaku wouldn't get up, Shimizu Kanon thought for a moment, a sly glint in her eye. She then smiled mischievously and said, "If you don't get up now, don't blame me!"
With that, she walked out of the bedroom.
A moment later, she returned holding a glass of ice water.
The glass was covered with a layer of mist.
Without saying anything, Shimizu Kanon yanked off the blanket and poured the ice water onto Aoi Kunisaku's neck.
The cold water ran down his neck.
In an instant, Aoi Kunisaku's eyes shot open, his entire body jolted awake.
"Ah! So cold! So freezing!" he screamed, jumping out of bed and glaring at Shimizu Kanon, who was chuckling to herself.
Shimizu Kanon spoke softly, "You wouldn't get up, so now we're late. Everyone has already left. If we don't hurry, the practice match will be over soon."
Aoi Kunisaku sighed and was about to get out of bed when he stopped.
He looked up at Shimizu Kanon, who was staring back at him.
They stared at each other for a while.
"Hurry up!" Shimizu Kanon urged.
Aoi Kunisaku looked at her and said, "I'm getting dressed. Do you want to see my body?"
Hearing this, Shimizu Kanon blushed, then huffed and turned away. "Who… who wants to see you!"
She quickly ran out of the room.
Aoi Kunisaku watched her leave, thinking about lying back down to sleep for a bit longer.
But knowing Shimizu Kanon would likely do something else, he reluctantly got up.
A short while later, Aoi Kunisaku came out of the bedroom.
Shimizu Kanon pointed to the kitchen table. "Breakfast is ready. Eat quickly. We have to leave soon."
"Ah! Got it. I'm going to wash my face first." Aoi Kunisaku scratched his head before heading to the bathroom.
Ryonan High School Basketball Court.
Shohoku's team had arrived.
Ryonan's coach, Taoka Moichi, was a man in his forties with a stern face, wearing a green short-sleeve shirt and blue casual pants.
He approached Coach Anzai Mitsuyoshi and slightly bowed. "Coach Anzai, I should have come to visit you, but I apologize for making you come here instead."
"Ho ho ho..."
Coach Anzai Mitsuyoshi smiled and waved his hand nonchalantly. "Not at all!"
Seeing this, both Shohoku and Ryonan teams were all shocked, with surprised expressions on their faces.
The first-year students couldn't help but ask, "Our coach seems pretty impressive, doesn't he?"
At this, Ayako explained, "Of course! Our coach was once an amazing person!"
Akagi Takanori stepped up to Taoka Moichi and shook his hand. "I'm Akagi Takanori, captain of the Shohoku basketball team. Please take care of us."
"Hello, Akagi. You're too polite," Taoka Moichi said. After a brief exchange, he continued, "I've heard that our player, Uozumi, has been aiming to defeat you. Akagi, you better show some mercy!"
"I'm Uozumi, captain of the Ryonan basketball team. Please take care of us," Uozumi Jun, the Ryonan captain, said from behind Akagi.
Uozumi Jun, standing over 2 meters tall, had a build similar to Akagi's. Just standing there, he gave off an imposing presence.
Akagi and Uozumi exchanged a brief glance.
The two captains faced off.
It was as if two bolts of lightning shot from their eyes, intertwining in midair.
At the same time, an invisible aura began to spread from both of them, pressing toward each other.
The surrounding players from Shohoku and Ryonan were all stunned by the pressure coming from the two captains, unable to help but swallow nervously.
After a long pause, Akagi and Uozumi slowly retracted their auras.
Soon after, both Shohoku and Ryonan began their pre-match preparations.
Shohoku's team gathered in their locker room.
Everyone stood in a line, waiting for Coach Anzai's speech.
Coach Anzai held a roster and addressed them. "We'll start handing out the team jerseys now."
At this, everyone stood up straight, eager to receive their jerseys.
Coach Anzai scanned the room before announcing.
"Center, Akagi, number 4."
"Shooting guard, Yasuda, number 6."
"Point guard, Shiozaki, number 8."
"Small forward, Kogure, number 5."
Each time someone was called, Ayako handed them the corresponding jersey.
Sakuragi Hanamichi watched with envy, almost drooling.
He stared at the jerseys being handed out, his eyes shining with excitement.
Then, Coach Anzai spoke again. "Power forward, Rukawa Kaede, number 10."
Hearing this, Sakuragi, who had never gotten along with Rukawa Kaede, couldn't hold back.
He gritted his teeth and shot a glare at Rukawa Kaede, who was in the corner. "Damn guy, that stinky fox got his jersey before me."
Though unwilling, Sakuragi kept quiet, suppressing his frustration as he waited for Coach Anzai to continue.
Coach Anzai spoke once more. "Lastly..."
At hearing "lastly," Sakuragi's heart raced.
His eyes were fixed on Coach Anzai, hoping to hear his name.
He silently repeated, "Sakuragi... Sakuragi... Sakuragi..."
Finally, Coach Anzai continued. "Aoi Kunisaku, number 11."
Boom...
It felt like a thunderclap had struck Sakuragi's mind.
A shadow covered his whole body as he couldn't stop thinking about why his name wasn't called.
Snapping out of it, he rushed over to Coach Anzai and started pulling on his chubby chin. "Old man, why am I not the starting player? Why don't I have a jersey? Even Rukawa and that guy who hasn't shown up yet got one, why don't I? What's going on?"
"Idiot, stop it!" Akagi Takanori immediately stopped him. "You big fool, how could a guy who's only just started playing basketball become a starter so easily?"
Sakuragi Hanamichi protested, "You lied to me! Didn't you say that whoever controls the rebounds controls the game?"
Hearing this, Akagi's face, already not very bright, darkened even further. He scolded, "Idiot, it's about controlling the game, not just the rebounds! Also, even if you're not a starter, you still have plenty of chances to play."
"Just a substitute, huh?" Sakuragi Hanamichi didn't want to listen.
The entire locker room was filled with chaos from Sakuragi's tantrum.
Even the Ryonan team outside looked confused, not knowing what was going on inside the locker room.
In the end, Coach Anzai used his secret weapon to calm Sakuragi down.
At the same time, after Sakuragi relentlessly begged, he managed to get Rukawa Kaede's number 10 jersey.
Rukawa Kaede, as in the original story, was naturally given the number 11.
It's worth mentioning that the number 11 jersey originally assigned to Aoi Kunisaku was now replaced with the empty number 9.
