Chapter 21: Chapter 21: The Day Before the Prefectural Tournament
Time passed quickly.
In the blink of an eye, nearly a week had gone by.
It was now May 15th.
Shohoku High School · Basketball Gymnasium.
With a creaking sound, the gym doors were pushed open.
Shimizu Kanon and Ayako walked in together from outside.
Ayako held a sheet of rolled-up paper in her hand. Before even stepping inside, she called loudly to the team in training, "Everyone! The match schedule is out!"
All eyes turned to her instantly. Movements across the court stopped.
Even their heavy breathing began to settle down.
Without beating around the bush, Ayako walked over to the whiteboard at the side of the gym. Carefully, she unrolled the wide paper and posted it securely.
Only then did everyone see—it was the bracket for the Kanagawa prefectural tournament.
The Shohoku team quickly gathered like a wave, eyes glowing with curiosity. Everyone was eager to see who Shohoku would be facing.
Kogure Kiminobu glanced around and asked curiously, "Kanon, isn't Aoi-kun with you? I don't see him."
Shimizu Kanon replied helplessly, a bit guilty, "I asked Saku-chan to go ahead since I had to pick up the schedule... I guess he never showed up."
Kogure smiled and waved it off. "No big deal. You being here is good enough."
The rest of the team didn't say much. They were all used to it by now.
After all, Aoi Kunisaku's strength spoke for itself.
Everyone's eyes turned back to the bracket. Soon, they found Shohoku's name.
"Our first opponent is Miuradai," Miyagi Ryota muttered thoughtfully.
He didn't know much about Miuradai.
Ayako explained, "Miuradai's actually really strong! Last year, they performed quite well—fought their way through until they lost to Kainan. I heard they've been training hard ever since, just to get revenge."
Sakuragi Hanamichi scratched his head and asked curiously, "Kainan? They that strong?"
Kogure patiently explained, "Sakuragi, Kainan's more than strong. They've made it to Nationals 16 years in a row. They're famous across Japan."
"Heh! What's so scary about that? With me, the genius Sakuragi Hanamichi, we'll crush them!" Sakuragi boasted, arms akimbo, face smug.
"Hmph. Don't talk big," a voice snapped from the back of the group.
"What did you say, you androgynous freak?!" Sakuragi roared, spinning around.
The voice belonged to none other than Mitsui Hisashi.
He had officially rejoined the basketball team.
He looked like a new man.
The wild long hair was gone, replaced by a neat, short cut.
His two missing front teeth had been replaced with dentures. His whole aura had changed—sharper, more composed, and still handsome.
It all started the day after Aoi Kunisaku's rematch with Rukawa Kaede.
That day, Mitsui had stormed into the gym with a gang of delinquents, ready to get revenge on Aoi for the humiliation.
But what he didn't know was that Aoi Kunisaku had zero sense of time.
When Mitsui arrived, Aoi wasn't there. So he lashed out at Sakuragi and Rukawa instead.
Naturally, neither of them took it lying down. The gym erupted into a full-on brawl.
By the time Aoi and Shimizu Kanon showed up, it was all wrapping up.
What Aoi saw was Mitsui kneeling in front of Coach Anzai, crying his eyes out about wanting to play basketball again.
The next day, Mitsui came back to the team like a different person.
Maybe he still held a grudge. The first thing he did was challenge Aoi.
And the result?
In front of everyone, Mitsui got wrecked so badly it made him question his entire life.
From that moment, he had no choice but to admit that Aoi Kunisaku's strength was far beyond his.
Mitsui pointed at a spot on the bracket and said seriously, "If we want to take down Kainan, we have to get through Shoyo first."
Even after two years away from the team, he still remembered the top contenders.
Ayako nodded in agreement. "Mitsui-senpai's right. Shoyo was second place last year. Only Kainan ranked higher."
At that moment, Shimizu Kanon pulled out a stack of documents and began handing them out. "Here's the scouting report I compiled on Miuradai. Take a look."
Everyone took a copy. As their eyes scanned the pages, their expressions changed.

…
Looking at the detailed dossiers on each Miuradai player—from ability breakdowns to personality traits and counter-strategies—everything was covered.
The Shohoku team, already used to Shimizu Kanon's intel-gathering skills, stayed calm.
But for Miyagi Ryota and Mitsui Hisashi, it was their first time seeing this. They stood frozen in shock.
Was this even humanly possible?
Anyone who didn't know better would think Shimizu Kanon was related to someone from Miuradai.
Why did she even have info on their coach?
What's with their favorite foods and hobbies?!
Was this a joke?
Even a professional spy might not dig this deep!
Right now, both Miyagi and Mitsui looked at Shimizu Kanon with awe.
They felt like they had no secrets in front of her. Completely exposed. Cold all over.
Shimizu Kanon continued, "Miuradai as a whole is average, but there's one new player worth noting—Naito Tetsuya. He's 196 cm tall, weighs 155 kg, and used to play rugby. Their coach scouted him and pulled him into the basketball team. What we know so far is he's super fast—runs 100 meters in 11 seconds—and he's crazy strong."
First-year Kuwata Toki gulped and muttered, "Sounds like Miuradai might not be so scary after all."
Sasaoka Satoro nodded. "Yeah, I was thinking the same."
Yamada Tadashi looked like he'd discovered a whole new world. He said excitedly, "Being a team manager actually sounds like a legit career path."
…
Kogure Kiminobu smiled softly. But in that smile was hope and a trace of nostalgia. "No matter what happens, this is our last summer, Akagi."
"Yeah." Akagi Takenori's face was serious. He nodded firmly and declared, "Alright. We're going to win. First, we beat Miuradai."
"Yeah!" everyone shouted in unison, their voices echoing through the entire gym.
…
Ryonan High School · Basketball Gymnasium
"Defense... defense... defense...!"
Shouts tore through the air, never ceasing.
Ryonan's players were locked in intense in-team drills, faces filled with seriousness and focus.
Aida Hikoichi watched them, feeling both encouraged and uneasy. "Ever since we lost to Shohoku, everyone's been under huge pressure. And it all comes down to one person."
Just thinking about Aoi Kunisaku tearing up the court that day made his body shiver slightly.
Part of it was excitement.
But part of it was fear.
Excitement because Aoi was just that strong.
He had never seen a player that powerful.
Fear, because Aoi was just that strong.
If they met again in a game, could Ryonan even beat him?
With that thought, he raised his voice too. "Come on, guys! Let's go!"
…
Shohoku High School · Rooftop
Ahhh...
Aoi Kunisaku yawned wide, slowly opening his eyes.
The sunset glowed like a massive fireball, casting the sky in brilliant orange and red.
He stared at the sun, dazed, and murmured, "The sun's almost down, huh?"
He sat up straight, like something clicked in his head. "Didn't Kanon say something to me earlier? Weird… can't remember at all."
"Oh right, I was supposed to go to practice." Just as he got up, he shook his head. "Forget it. It's too late now. No point rushing over."
"My stomach's empty anyway. Might as well head home. I'll deal with practice tomorrow."
With that, he stood, brushed off the dust on his clothes, and strolled away from the rooftop.
Meanwhile...
Shimizu Kanon sat in 1st Year, Class 7's classroom, arms crossed, cheeks puffed with frustration, mumbling nonstop, "That big idiot Saku-chan... where the hell did he go?!"
