Apocalypse: My Items Upgrade Infinitely

Chapter 9: Chapter 9: Awakened Abilities and Upgrading through Killing Bugs

Lin Feng paused for a moment, contemplating before he explained to the curious women:

"This is actually some kind of ability, bound to the handgun. It enhances its power and replenishes bullets by killing giant insects."

Since the handgun would continue to upgrade, possibly gaining new attributes, Lin Feng couldn't keep it a secret forever. Revealing it now could boost his companions' confidence.

As soon as he finished speaking, Chen Yanyan became excited and asked eagerly:

"An ability? Did you awaken an ability? Is it related to the resurgence of spiritual energy? Is it connected to the bugs? Do you gain it by killing them?"

Lin Feng waved his handgun, signaling her to calm down:

"Shh, keep calm."

"I don't fully understand how it came to be, which is why I'm experimenting with the bugs..."

He then nudged the nearby red armored beetle and looked at his sister-in-law, who seemed bewildered.

Zhang Yuruo, being older, struggled to keep up with their discussion, her concepts somewhat out of date.

Lin Feng explained to her again:

"It's some kind of superpower, akin to the special abilities and qigong craze of the early century, just under a different name."

"Yuruo, do you remember feeling feverish this morning?"

Zhang Yuruo nodded, realizing:

"But I think I had a fever since last night. After my night run, I was all sweaty and got chilled."

Lin Feng shrugged, unable to explain these phenomena. He intended to consult more knowledgeable people once they reached Haicheng University:

"It might be related to individual constitution. Since you exercise regularly, your fever passed, and you evolved. Didn't you feel any stronger?"

At this, Zhang Yuruo frowned slightly, clenching her fists and swinging the long knife before nodding:

"I'm quite attuned to my body's condition, and there have been changes. But I don't have any special abilities like yours. Is it because I haven't fully awakened?"

Lin Feng nodded, pointing to the beetle at his feet:

"Perhaps you haven't killed any bugs yet, so the evolutionary effects aren't as apparent."

Both women considered this, realizing that Lin Feng was the only one who had killed a bug, which might be significant.

But overall, it was good news. In the current situation, ordinary people had no chance against the insect swarm.

Seeing their attention shift from him to the beetle, Lin Feng sighed in relief.

He suspected that ordinary people's upgrades might be linked to killing giant insects. He planned to let Chen Yanyan test this theory.

While farming upgrade points from the beetle, Lin Feng held his lv3 premium handgun and initiated his upgrade.

The familiar warm current flowed from the gun into his arm, circulating through his body.

Moments later, the upgrade completed:

"Lin Feng, lv3/9"

"Health: 20, Constitution: 15, Spirit: 14"

This upgrade increased each attribute by 5 points, doubling Lin Feng's initial stats and greatly enhancing his capabilities.

Previously a typical office worker, he was underweight and in suboptimal health, possibly even less fit than Yuruo, who regularly ran and practiced yoga.

But now, after three upgrades, Lin Feng's muscles were defined, his physique much more robust, shedding his earlier frail appearance.

The boost in constitution and spirit also improved his control over the handgun, negating recoil, allowing for precise shooting, and significantly increasing his firing rate and accuracy.

With bound equipment, upgrades were mutually reinforcing.

Lin Feng couldn't resist the urge to kiss his gun.

Every boy dreams of wielding firearms, and Lin Feng had achieved this dream today, in the most perfect way.

Suppressing his excitement, Lin Feng skillfully ejected the magazine, pocketing the fully replenished bullets one by one.

By then, the beetle had consumed the entire corpse, bones included, crushing and swallowing everything.

Whenever its health exceeded 20, Lin Feng would prompt Chen Yanyan to sever its regenerated limbs with the long knife.

Once it finished, the beetle had less than ten health points remaining, still barely clinging to life.

Chen Yanyan's long knife had also accumulated sufficient upgrade points. Lin Feng upgraded it and returned it to her:

"Try it. Aim for the head and finish it."

Chen Yanyan nodded, nervously lifting the long knife with difficulty. The blade was heavy, and she needed all her strength to swing it down.

Lin Feng and Zhang Yuruo watched her intently.

The lv2 long knife, extremely sharp, dealt ten points of damage, severing the beetle's head and depleting its health.

The beetle, tormented for over an hour, finally found release.

Suddenly, an excited Chen Yanyan felt her entire body heat up, sweat pouring as her clothes became soaked, her breathing deep and rapid.

After a few breaths, she gradually calmed down.

Lin Feng watched as she completed her upgrade in just a few minutes:

"Human, lv1/9"

"Health: 12, Constitution: 8, Spirit: 8"

Indeed, killing bugs directly led to upgrades and evolution, marking the upgrade path for ordinary people. The upgrade effects from killing bugs far surpassed the natural evolutionary upgrades, like the one Yuruo experienced.

Not only were the attribute boosts substantial, but the upgrade process didn't induce dizziness or fever, maintaining combat readiness, and was remarkably swift.

In an apocalypse surrounded by giant insects, this was crucial.

Reflecting on this, Lin Feng looked at his lv3 premium handgun, formulating a bold plan.

To safely escort the women to Haicheng University, he couldn't rely solely on his upgrades; they needed self-defense capabilities against the insects.

Lin Feng approached, patting Chen Yanyan's shoulder:

"How do you feel? Notice any improvements?"

Shocked, Chen Yanyan nodded excitedly:

"Yes, there was a warm sensation coursing through my body. Once it ended, the long knife felt much lighter..."

"I feel much better overall."

She effortlessly swung the long knife, her joy evident.

Lin Feng recalled her pre-upgrade state, with a constitution of only 4. Doubling that, she would definitely notice the drastic change.

The next moment, Lin Feng caught a whiff of fragrance as she kissed his cheek, retreating like a rabbit, her cheeks slightly flushed:

"Thank you..."

Lin Feng rolled his eyes, seeing through her act. Glancing at his sister-in-law, he noted her lack of concern and shook his head:

"No need to thank me. I was just testing a theory with you."

Ignoring Chen Yanyan's frustrated foot-stomping, Lin Feng handed the long knife to Zhang Yuruo, then addressed both women, his expression turning serious:

"If killing insects leads to upgrades and evolution, we need to shift our perspective..."

"This might be our best chance. The giant insects in the neighborhood are limited, only around a dozen. If we eliminate them all, we'll gain enough strength to reach Haicheng University."

"The university is closer to Haicheng's urban area, where more insects will appear. We need to grow as strong as possible."

With this, Lin Feng drew the dagger strapped to his thigh and began cutting the dead beetle's carapace.

The women watched him thoughtfully, but both agreed to follow him upstairs.

Lin Feng intended to craft the carapace into a Red Armored Shield while explaining and planning their next steps.

With the strongest weapon, the handgun, bullet supply was no concern, but reloading posed a challenge. With two magazines, he had a maximum of 24 bullets, each with a base damage of 6.

Considering missed and ineffective shots, Lin Feng estimated a magazine could kill up to three beetles.

But he could accumulate sixty bullets, filling five magazines, so he needed someone to help reload, and they had to be quick, reloading twelve bullets in twenty seconds.

Upon mentioning this, Chen Yanyan volunteered:

"I can handle it. My endurance and coordination aren't as good as Yuruo's, so I can't wield a shield and knife simultaneously. I worked in a factory during summer breaks, doing piecework..."

Lin Feng nodded, handing her bullets and magazines. As she practiced, her reloading speed exceeded his expectations.

She could reload an empty magazine in just fifteen to sixteen seconds.

With roles confirmed, half an hour later, the trio, fully armed, exited the room.

They possessed an lv3 handgun, two sturdy Red Armored Shields, and two lv2 long knives.

Though not equipped for a large swarm, they could handle two or three beetles at a time using the building's terrain advantage.

Slowly approaching apartment 201's doorway, Lin Feng turned to the women.

They donned helmets, with the stronger Zhang Yuruo holding a shield and long knife, while Chen Yanyan followed Lin Feng, ready to provide additional damage and reload bullets.

Taking a deep breath, Lin Feng inserted the key, ready to unlock the door:

"Are you both ready?"

The women nodded in unison.

Their expressions were solemn, gripping their long knives tightly.

This would be their first real combat together.
