Chapter 140: Chapter 140: The Military Restricted Zone
The host's voice carried a trace of melancholy.
He sympathized with the plight of billions of people in the outside world, while also feeling fortunate to live in the Glimmer Plains.
After satisfying his curiosity, he shifted the conversation back to the program.
"Well then, enough with the small talk.
"Brave traveler, it's time for you to choose a competition for our contestants. Will it be singing, dancing, horse racing, or wrestling?"
"Dancing," Su Wu replied. "I have a friend who's also practicing dance. I can record it and bring it back for her to see."
Su Wu glanced at the contestants. Their colorful attire seemed perfect for traditional folk dances.
"Contestants, you'd better give it your all this time," the host quipped. "Don't let our guest from 2,000 kilometers away see you embarrassed."
Pressing his earpiece, the host listened intently before adding, "Brave traveler, if you're not in a hurry, please wait a bit by the lake. Our crew has decided to send you a gift via drone—a rack of freshly roasted lamb ribs, prepared by our chef. It's a token of appreciation from all of us in the Glimmer Plains, wishing you a safe journey."
"Thank you. I'm looking forward to it," Su Wu said.
The drone delivered a ten-pound rack of golden, crispy lamb ribs. After enjoying the feast and watching the rest of the program, Su Wu resumed his journey northwest in the base vehicle.
Leaving the Glimmer Plains, he entered a landscape dominated by gray tones—low mountains and rocky deserts.
Here, paved roads were nonexistent, replaced by fields of sharp stones and gravel.
For Su Wu, traveling in the massive base vehicle felt no different. Sharp rocks were crushed effortlessly beneath the steel tracks, with no impact on the vehicle's stability.
However, the monotonous barren scenery soon grew tiresome.
Shortly after entering the desert, Su Wu grew restless and handed the driving controls to the onboard AI. He retreated to the living room and settled on the sofa to play games.
Five hours into the desert crossing, Su Wu received an alert from the AI.
The external radiation levels were spiking abnormally, rising from single digits to over 2,000. As the vehicle advanced, the levels climbed even higher.
"Another radiation disaster?" Su Wu muttered, pausing his game and heading to the cockpit.
Looking at the radar data, he was puzzled. In Jianghe City, radiation disasters were common, but in the Glimmer Plains, surface radiation levels were near zero. It didn't make sense for such a sudden spike to occur.
Frowning, Su Wu slowed the vehicle and deployed a reconnaissance drone to investigate.
Minutes later, the source of the radiation became clear—a hidden underground base in the mountains.
"Military restricted zone."
Su Wu raised an eyebrow as he read the sign at the entrance, suspecting the radiation wasn't natural but leaked from the base's nuclear reactor.
A military base with a nuclear reactor was worth investigating, even with limited information.
Ever since discovering the deadly Purple Crystalites in the Earth's depths, Su Wu had felt a growing need to strengthen his arsenal. However, most of the weapons he could manufacture were outdated models sourced from publicly available designs. Though effective, they were no match for the Federation's standard military equipment.
Now, with the chance to acquire advanced military weaponry, Su Wu wasn't about to pass it up.
Parking the base vehicle near the restricted zone, Su Wu dispatched an engineering robot with two construction robots as assistants to unlock the entrance.
Dealing with the thick metal doors of underground facilities had become routine for Su Wu. The engineering robot's high-frequency oscillation cutter made quick work of the task, usually taking no more than a minute or two.
This time was no exception.
With the base seemingly abandoned and its backup power nearly depleted, the robots encountered no resistance as they breached the door.
Beyond the entrance lay a dark corridor. Su Wu activated the robots' lights and sent a construction robot ahead to scout.
The corridor stretched downward for nearly 100 meters, with isolation doors blocking the way at intervals.
These barriers added some inconvenience but posed no real obstacle. Against the engineering robot's cutter, any purely physical barrier was a matter of seconds or minutes.
Half an hour later, the robot team reached the base's interior, where Su Wu saw several shriveled corpses in military uniforms.
"They were trying to escape but couldn't open the isolation doors."
Judging by the corpses' positions, Su Wu quickly pieced together the scenario.
In an environment with radiation levels exceeding several thousand, even a few minutes' delay meant certain death. Blocked by isolation doors without keys or tools, their despair was unimaginable.
Not dwelling on the corpses, Su Wu instructed the robot team to continue exploring.
However, their progress soon halted as radiation levels spiked to nearly 10,000, causing intermittent communication disruptions between the robots and the base vehicle.
"That's as far as we can go," Su Wu sighed regretfully, unwilling to risk pushing the robots further.
The issue wasn't just communication. The anti-radiation coating could only withstand radiation levels up to 10,000. Beyond that, it would fail immediately, leaving the robots unprotected.
Unable to proceed deeper, Su Wu focused on the b
ase's less irradiated areas, which still offered plenty to explore.
