Chapter 41: Chapter 41: First Minion
She wanted to get up, yet her body felt so heavy that she needed to stop for a while. Lifting her head, she sighed in relief.
This place… she had made it there.
The ruins of her previous observation room. Some parts of the ground were uneven. Some holes appeared hollow, like a small crater. The opening to that tunnel-like space was gone; buried in soil and rocks.
The rooms had crumbled, leaving four walls, missing windows and doors. Medical equipment, hospital beds, curtains, and tiles; everything was painted with dirt and dried dark blood.
It looked like something that had just come out of a horror movie which took place in an abandoned hospital.
Signs of zombies were everywhere on the broken ground. The rancid smell wasn't as nauseous as before. Her nose had magically gotten used to it, along with her zombie transformation.
Besides her, there didn't seem to be any hints of living beings.
Then she heard slow footsteps, like the person was dragging their feet. Zerra cursed in her heart, her senses alert.
It was a zombie who had somehow survived this and kept at least his limbs and head intact.
An idea struck her. Since she became a zombie level two now, should she try to control this level one zombie?
"Sit." She ordered. Her own hoarse voice surprised her. It was so unpleasant to the ears that she scrunched her face.
The zombie froze, then threw himself to the ground. He had awkwardly sat down despite the odd position; his body hunched forward, and his feet twisted.
Presumably, before he transformed into a zombie, he must have tried to run, and his feet were broken in the process. Fortunately, he could still walk and stand, because he felt no pain.
Zerra marvelled at her newfound power. She ordered the zombie to make all sorts of gestures.
"Get up and twirl!"
Stiffly, the zombie got up, albeit slow and began to twirl himself. It was odd coming from a zombie, but Zerra seemed to enjoy giving it commands.
"Stick your tongue out!"
"Show your middle finger!"
With each of her commands, the zombie always followed. Her voice also got better, not as unpleasant as branches of tree scraping against each other like before.
It was more… human.
At this thought, she was a bit despondent. Because she was no longer human now. Oh nevermind, she was a fox and never a human being in the first place, anyway. In order to cheer herself up, she told the zombie, "Show me some dance, you know."
She sat with her legs crossed, her hands supporting her cheeks. Her mouth twitched when she saw the performance in front of her; she winced.
"Stop! Stop!" She ordered hurriedly, heaving a sigh of relief once he halted his movement.
She couldn't bear to watch a zombie dancing. It was akin to another scene ripped off directly from a horror movie. His legs tangled and twisted further. Blood and pus splashing everywhere. Absolutely horrifying!
Not to mention that bloody looking face, empty eyes. His rotten flesh occasionally would fall off and his skin peeled.
Zerra's pupils suddenly dilated. Oh, damn. She had gotten distracted by the zombie that she forgot about the most pressing matter! She had to get out of here before Cassias and others arrived.
It was the only way to make her survival seem logical.
Originally, she wanted to pretend to be dead and live as the fox, but she didn't expect that she would transform into a human so soon.
It was out of her control.
Likewise, if she were to transform into a fox again, it would be a situation beyond her control.
"Go away as far as possible." She urgently told the zombie, who instantly walked away upon hearing her command.
She traced Cassias's position using her senses, powered by spiritual power. Oh, he was just less than twenty meters away. In seconds, he might even see her running away.
Gritting her teeth, she pretended to just lay dead inside the room. Her face filled with dirt all over and half her body was inside the deep crater in the ground.
Her eyelashes fluttered the moment Cassias entered the door. He was quick. In just a few seconds, he had arrived. Just like she had guessed.
Then Laziel followed, panting. "Sorry, man… I didn't know… that the fox would run away once we are out…"
Cassias didn't say anything to him, but his gaze swept toward the entire room. Laziel recoiled in shock when he saw the room's condition. In total ruin, with no sign of life. Not even a zombie.
He took a sharp breath and stuttered, "This-this… isn't this place the observation room?"
In a slow voice, a bit panicky, he exhaled. "What about Zerra…?"
He jumped into the room again, shouting Zerra's name. His voice was urgent, hopeful with a sliver of desperation.
Zerra felt strange. She had wrapped herself with the dirty green curtain, embedding herself among the ruins. A strange sensation coursed through her heart when she heard Laziel's voice.
Something warm and indescribable.
From the sounds of things moving, she could hear them pulling everything. Their footsteps were loud against the still room.
Then, she could feel someone pulling the blanket she had used to cover her head, exposing her to the open air. Cassias let out a breath. "She is here."
"How is she?" Laziel took hurried footsteps toward them.
Cassias carefully dragged her out of the small crater. Unwrapping the curtain around her body, he checked for any injuries in her exposed skin.
"No injury, right?" Laziel had a hint of anxiousness in his tone.
"She is not injured." Cassias frowned. "But… she is extremely weak right now."
He took out water from his space and pried Zerra's mouth open, letting the water moisten her chapped lips. Indeed, Cassias' water was different. More refreshing, like some kind of spring water.
"You can give her to me," Laziel muttered. "I will bring her away… in case you still want to look for your fox."
Cassias didn't say anything. Instead, he lifted Zerra's limp body into his embrace. "That fox is a zombie. It will be fine."
He began to walk toward the door. He turned to Laziel. "Don't forget that she is also my fiancee."
With that, he turned again and stepped out of the room. Laziel fell silent when he heard that. He ran his fingers through his hair and chased after them.
The moment they were out, a zombie suddenly lunged toward them.
Zerra opened her eyes and squeaked. "No!"
The zombie stopped.
"Are you awake?" Cassias scrutinized her.
She froze, but she was quick to regain her senses. She tried to appear disoriented with her face scrunched and eyes squinted. Clutching her head, she let out a groan in pain. "My head hurts…"
He began walking again, ignoring the zombie. Taking large strides, he told Zerra in an assuring tone, "Close your eyes and try to relax… we will quickly return to the room. You can get some rest."
As soon as he said that, the zombie, who was unmoving a few meters away, suddenly chased after them. He let out beast-like roars, going after them like he had some kind of irreconcilable hatred.
Zerra was stunned. Her command no longer worked?
"Oh no, zombie!" She muttered out loud in panic, pointing behind Cassias. She hoped that it would work like it did before, but…
Unlike earlier, the zombie still didn't stop.
She was utterly dumbfounded. Why did the first minion she recruited in this reincarnation suddenly rebelled against her?
