Apocalyptic Passion

Chapter 35: SHADOWS OF BETRAYAL

The chamber pulsed with raw energy.

Azrail's hands trembled as she fought to steady her breathing, her magic coiling around her like a restless storm. Across from her, Abaddon stood unmoving, his expression unreadable. The flickering torchlight danced across his features, casting eerie shadows that made him look even less human.

The once-familiar warmth of his presence was gone, replaced by a suffocating darkness that twisted and coiled around him like unseen chains. His figure, though undeniably his, felt like an illusion—something crafted from the remnants of a person who no longer existed.

Azrail's mind raced. The memories of her childhood, of the boy who once swore to protect her, clashed violently with the monster standing before her now.

"This isn't him."

The thought hammered through her skull, but the truth was undeniable. Whatever remained of her brother was buried beneath layers of darkness, twisted by forces she couldn't yet understand.

Her heart clenched. How had it come to this?

How had he become this?

"You call me broken," she finally whispered, her voice laced with something dangerous. "But you—" she exhaled sharply, her grip tightening. "You let them turn you into this."

Abaddon's lips curled. "Them?" He chuckled, shaking his head. "Oh, sister. Do you still think in such simple terms?"

His voice was silk laced with venom, and it sent chills down her spine.

"I was never turned into anything. I became what I was meant to be."

Azrail's stomach twisted.

"You were meant to be my brother," she said, voice barely above a breath.

Abaddon's eyes darkened. "And you were meant to save me."

The accusation hit like a blade.

She wanted to deny it. Wanted to tell him he was wrong. But the look in his eyes—a flicker of something raw, something wounded—kept the words from forming.

Silence stretched between them, thick and suffocating.

Asmodeus, who had remained silent all this time, finally stepped forward. His presence was like a cold gust of wind cutting through the storm.

"This is pointless," he murmured, his voice deceptively calm. "You're stalling."

Abaddon's smirk didn't fade, but there was something sharp in his gaze now.

"You always see through me, don't you?"

"You're predictable," Asmodeus said flatly.

Abaddon chuckled, but there was no humor in it. "And yet, here you are. Playing bodyguard to the girl who abandoned her own blood."

Asmodeus didn't flinch.

"You made your choice, Abaddon."

"And you made yours," Abaddon countered smoothly. "Look where it got you."

Azrail had had enough.

Her power surged, a flicker of fire dancing at her fingertips. "What do you want?" she demanded.

Abaddon's smirk vanished.

For the first time since he appeared, his gaze softened—just for a moment.

Then he whispered, "To see if you're ready."

Before Azrail could react, the air around them collapsed.

A shockwave of dark energy erupted from Abaddon's form, sending her flying backward. She barely managed to shield herself before she slammed into the stone wall, the impact knocking the breath from her lungs.

Her vision blurred.

Asmodeus moved in an instant, his power lashing out, but Abaddon was already gone.

The chamber was silent once more

Azrail pushed herself up, her hands shaking. "Damn it," she hissed.

Asmodeus exhaled slowly. "He was testing you."

She swallowed hard. "For what?"

A pause.

And then, Asmodeus met her gaze.

"For the war that's coming."

The weight of his words settled over her like a shroud.

The war

A battle she had never wanted, but one that had been creeping closer with each passing moment. A war she wasn't sure she was prepared to fight.

Her hands curled into fists. "He thinks I'm not ready."

Asmodeus studied her for a long moment. "Are you?"

Azrail didn't have an answer. Not yet.

She staggered to her feet, brushing dust off her cloak. "We need to find out what he's planning."

Asmodeus inclined his head slightly. "He's moving faster than expected. If he wanted to break you, he would have attacked differently. This was a test, nothing more."

A test.

Her jaw clenched. She was tired of being tested.

Her entire life had been a series of trials, obstacles designed to shape her into something more, something greater. But no matter how strong she became, it never seemed to be enough.

She turned toward the doorway. "We need to move. If Abaddon is already making his move, we can't afford to wait."

Asmodeus fell into step beside her, his expression unreadable. "Where do you plan to go?"

"To the one place he won't expect," she said, steel in her voice. "To the heart of his empire."

Asmodeus lifted an eyebrow. "Bold. Reckless. You'll be walking into the lion's den."

"Good. Let him see that I'm not afraid."

She wasn't sure if she was lying.

The journey to Abaddon's stronghold was treacherous.

The air grew heavier the closer they got, thick with a presence that felt almost alive. Shadows whispered at the edges of their vision, flickering in and out of existence like specters waiting to strike.

Asmodeus moved like a phantom, his senses sharp, his magic coiled just beneath the surface. Azrail followed closely, every step calculated.

They reached the outer walls just before dawn.

The fortress loomed before them, an imposing structure carved from black stone, its jagged towers piercing the sky like skeletal fingers. The gates stood closed, the sigils etched into them pulsing with a faint, ominous glow.

Azrail exhaled. "This is it."

Asmodeus nodded. "No turning back."

She placed a hand on the cold stone, feeling the vibrations of the magic woven into it.

Then, with a deep breath, she let her power surge.

The sigils cracked, splintering under the force of her magic. The gate shuddered.

And then, slowly, it began to open.

Asmodeus unsheathed his blade, his gaze flickering to her. "Whatever happens in there—"

"I know," she murmured. "We finish what we started."

The gates yawned open, revealing the darkness beyond.

Azrail stepped forward, heart pounding.

Ready or not, the war had begun.
