Arcbound: Tale of The Guardians

Chapter 11: It's Morphing Time

---

The day after their first elemental training, Jay stood before them again in Carl's backyard—same student disguise, same barely-visible mark, but something about his posture felt more serious.

His voice was calm, but charged. "You've touched your elements. Now, we go deeper. Today, you learn to draw from your Shigamis—not just fight beside them."

The Guardians straightened. The air felt thicker somehow, expectant.

Jay continued. "The Shigamis are more than spirit guides. They are the echoes of your origin—the elemental beings tied to the very core of your powers. To truly become Guardians… you must merge with them."

Natasha raised a brow. "Merge?"

Jay nodded. "You and your Shigami will become one force. For that, you'll need these—"

He lifted his hand.

Six orbs of radiant energy materialized in the air—each glowing with different hues. Blue. Red. Green. Silver. Gold. Violet.

The air pulsed.

"They're called Oria," Jay said. "Not stones. Not tools. They're living fragments of the First Flame—the source of all elemental bonds. They appear when your Shigami accepts you… and when your spirit is ready."

One by one, the orbs floated to each Guardian.

Carl's was gold and airy like sunlight in wind.

Nora's shimmered in deep ocean blue.

Natasha's burned crimson with dancing embers.

Kai's was green and heavy with rooted strength.

Henry's crackled silver like bottled lightning.

They each reached out.

The moment their fingers brushed the Oria, the orbs dissolved into light—reshaping into jewelry:

Carl's became a sleek gold ring with feathered patterns.

Nora's formed a pendant like a frozen droplet.

Natasha's turned into a slim bracelet lined with ember runes.

Kai's became a carved stone band fitted around his wrist.

Henry's shaped into a cuff of silver light with a panther sigil.

They blinked, admiring the transformation.

"These," Jay explained, "are part of you now. Not just symbols—but channels. When you merge with your Shigami, these will anchor and amplify the connection. They also keep the merge hidden… until you're ready."

"Wait," Carl said, squinting at his ring. "So… we get cool powers and accessories?"

Jay smiled. "You'll also receive battle gear—armor born from your bond. It reflects your element and your Shigami's form. Speed, strength, reaction—everything is enhanced."

Henry looked at Auris. "So I become like… a lightning panther ninja?"

Auris tilted its head. > "An accurate, if dramatic, description."

Solari flared beside Natasha. > "Your form will mirror my flames."

Zephro flapped beside Carl. > "And mine will carry you on the wind."

Carl threw his fist up. "I knew it! It's morphin' time!"

Everyone turned to look at him.

Jay blinked. "What?"

Carl struck a pose, grinning. "Come on! Every great transformation needs a line. 'By the winds of destiny!' or—no—'Storm surge initiate!' Wait, I got it—'Power of Zephro, engage!'"

Natasha groaned. "Please don't."

Kai facepalmed. "This is going to be a long day."

Zephro squawked. > "I refuse to be summoned by that nonsense."

Jay chuckled lightly. "The Oria responds to will, not theatrics. But if yelling helps you focus… fine."

Carl pumped his fist. "I knew yelling worked."

Jay raised his hands again. "To initiate the merge, place your hand over your Oria, focus on your Shigami's presence—and let go. Let it flow into you."

Nora went first.

She closed her eyes, touched the pendant, and whispered, "Kelko… I'm ready."

Water shimmered around her. Her hair lifted slightly, her eyes glowing with ocean-blue light. Armor unfolded around her like flowing silk and ice—her sleeves rippled like frozen waves.

Next was Natasha.

She pressed her bracelet. "Solari. Let's burn."

The flame Shigami surged forward—and in a burst of fire, she stood cloaked in ember armor, eyes glowing crimson, embers flickering with each breath.

Carl followed, grinning. "Catchphrase or not—let's soar, Zephro!"

A gust of wind lifted around him. Feathers spun in the air. His armor shimmered with aerodynamic curves, light as a breeze but razor-edged at the joints.

Kai took a deep breath. "Gorun. I'm with you."

The turtle floated forward. Roots coiled upward around him as he transformed—his body reinforced with stone patterns and natural armor that pulsed with green energy.

Henry stared at his cuff. Then at Auris. "I… I'll try."

He pressed his hand down. "Let's spark."

Lightning burst outward. His hair lifted. Silver armor crackled across his form, sleek and powerful. His eyes glowed like stormlight.

Jay stood in silence for a moment, watching them all with arms crossed.

> "Now," he said, "you look like Guardians."

Carl turned, spinning once in place. "Okay, but real talk—do I look cool flying? Like, does the cape work?"

Natasha rolled her eyes. "You don't have a cape."

Carl pouted. "Then why do I feel like I should?"

Zephro sighed. > "You're hopeless."

Carl blinked. "Wait—did you just talk to me?"

Zephro gave a nod, eyes twinkling with dry amusement.

Carl turned to the others, alarmed. "Guys! I heard him! He spoke!"

Jay chuckled. "You're merged. While merged, your bond deepens—you can hear your Shigami. Only you. No one else can."

Carl stared at Zephro in awe. "You mean all this time you've had opinions and never said anything?!"

> "Most of them were about your hair," Zephro said smugly.

Carl gasped. "Unbelievable."

Meanwhile, Natasha examined her armor—sleek red-black with flared shoulders and a high collar. Her nose scrunched.

"Okay, is it just me, or does this suit look like it's from the 1400s?"

Jay turned to her, nodding. "That's because it is. These were the suits of the last Guardians—preserved within the Oria."

"Yeah, but can we not look like rejected fantasy cosplayers?" she muttered.

"As your will strengthens," Jay said calmly, "the suits evolve. The Oria responds to identity."

Right on cue, Kai's armor shimmered, the earthen plates softening, forming into sleek armored sleeves with moss-green accents and smooth plating along his shoulders. His boots hardened into protective greaves, flexible and modern.

Carl watched as one by one, their suits shifted—crimson flames for Natasha, flowing ocean-teal for Nora, silver-sleek storm gear for Henry, and wind-layered agile gear for himself.

"Okay, this—this is sick," Carl said. "Now we're talkin'."

Nora examined her sleeves, still awash with ocean-blue glints. "It's… light. Almost too light. Doesn't feel like armor."

Jay smiled faintly. "Because it's not meant to burden you. Your suits are indestructible to any human weapon. Only powerful Shade Fiends can test their limits—and even that depends on the strength of the wielder."

Kai raised an eyebrow. "Wait. Even a bomb?"

"Unless you trip over your own feet," Solari muttered to Natasha, "you'll be fine."

Jay clapped his hands once. "Now—your Oria have stabilized. Your suits have responded. But no Guardian goes into battle bare-handed. Your Shigamis have chosen your weapons."

He stepped aside, and glowing symbols appeared in the air—each one descending to its owner.

Henry stepped forward first. From the silver glyphs, a sleek dual short staff formed, humming with lightning. It split apart in his hands, then clicked back into a long full staff that rested diagonally across his back in magnetic clips.

"Whoa," he said, eyes wide. "This is…"

> "It bends with your strikes," Auris whispered. "Speed and flow are your strength."

Kai's came next—a round shield, etched with ancient turtle-shell patterns and glowing with earthy symbols. It attached magnetically to his forearm, light but impossibly solid.

"Feels like I could block a truck with this," he muttered.

> "Or push one," Gorun said softly.

Nora was next.

She extended her hand—and a sleek trident spun into form, its base collapsible, shrinking to a compact rod she could attach to her side.

"Elegant," she said, twirling it once. "Balanced."

> "And when it's needed most," Kelko added, "it expands to full strength. Just like you."

From Natasha's glyph, a flame whip formed—coiled tightly like a bracelet on her arm, glowing with warm ember tones.

She gave it a flick—and it snapped into flame with a sharp hiss before curling again neatly.

> "Burns when needed. Sleeps when not," Solari said with pride.

Carl stepped forward dramatically. "Okay, okay—what ridiculous weapon does the winds of destiny have for me?"

Zephro didn't answer. Instead, a long wind staff descended—etched with feathered grooves and swirling currents. It whistled softly, even while still.

Carl caught it, spinning it dramatically. "Oh yeah. This feels right."

He posed.

Jay raised an eyebrow. "You're not on stage, Carl."

Carl pointed at everyone, full superhero-mode. "Okay, now that we're officially armored up, we have to do superhero names."

Natasha facepalmed. "No. We don't."

"Think about it!" Carl said. "I could be—Gale Striker! No wait—The Wind Whisperer!"

> "I vote no," said Zephro immediately.

Kai rolled his eyes. "Let's just not give the Shade Fiends more reasons to laugh."

Henry, twirling his staff, gave a faint grin. "Stormbolt wouldn't be the worst thing I've been called."

Carl gasped. "Yesss! See? He's in!"

Jay shook his head but smiled faintly. "Name yourselves whatever you like. As long as your focus remains… sharp."

The group stood in a loose circle, weapons in hand, armor still glowing faintly with the power of the Oria. Shigamis floated at their sides—silent but ever-present.

Jay looked at each of them. "This bond you now share—it cannot be taken, only grown. Your journey from here will not be easy. But today, you touched the heart of what it means to be a Guardian."

The sun dipped behind the trees.

For a moment, no one spoke.

Then Carl broke the silence.

"Guys… we seriously need a team name."

Everyone groaned at once.

> "You're still hopeless," Zephro sighed.

> "Painfully," added Solari.

Jay turned and walked toward the shadows again, his form slowly phasing out.

"You'll thank him later," he called back. "Now get some rest. Tomorrow, we begin testing your Oria—for real."

They looked at each other, silent again.

Different.

Connected.

Ready.

The Guardians had only just begun.
