Chapter 180: Chapter 180: I Wish They’d Target Me More Often
If he wasn't trying to show off, Steven could have finished the fight even faster.
But since he was already power leveling a newbie, not showing off would be a complete waste.
After sheathing [Yamato], Steven didn't stop there. In an instant, he vanished from his spot, and the next time he appeared, he was right in the middle of the monster horde.
The same dazzling sword slashes, too fast to be seen.
The same blinding speed, impossible to react to.
Like a teleporting meat grinder, Steven flashed through the battlefield. With every movement, the sky rained blood.
To Irene, this horde of sea monsters was so massive that even a High Inquisitor might not have been able to break through.
Yet, in the blink of an eye, the entire swarm was reduced to a field of dismembered corpses.
It felt surreal, like a dream.
Even in her dreams, she couldn't kill Seaborn this fast…
Soon, with one final flourish and a satisfying click of his sword returning to its sheath, the overwhelming swarm that had engulfed the village vanished.
Only a field of shredded flesh and carnage remained—a scene straight out of hell.
Irene stood frozen in place, holding her lantern, staring blankly at the gruesome display of slaughter before her.
Meanwhile, Steven strolled back toward her, casually tucking [Yamato] into his waist.
He looked less like a warrior who had just massacred an army, and more like an elderly man finishing his morning exercise.
This one session had earned him several thousand WAP and fed some souls to [Yamato].
'Not a bad deal at all.'
'Honestly, I wish I could start every morning like this.'
"What are you staring at?"
He reached out and lightly tapped the completely dazed little bird on the head, snapping her back to reality.
"You were the one who told me I could go all out. I made sure not to leave any survivors."
Steven explained in a lower voice.
The sea monsters that had made it onto land were all dead.
As for the ones still in the ocean—they had already retreated halfway through his slaughter spree.
Steven had no intention of swimming after them, so he let them go… for now.
Now that the monsters were dealt with…
It was time to check on this poor little bird.
How the hell did she manage to piss off so many monsters?
The way they swarmed her made Steven feel like anyone else in her position would have ended up locked up in monster jail alongside her.
"You weren't using this before, were you?"
Still a little stiff, Irene finally regained her senses.
Her eyes landed on the black katana in Steven's hand.
This style of weapon was most common among Eastern warriors.
Compared to the purple-black longsword Steven had wielded before, this katana looked much simpler—almost plain.
But after witnessing what it had just done, there was no way Irene would believe it was just an ordinary blade.
After all, this was Steven's weapon.
There's no way it could be that simple.
"Just swapping weapons," Steven shrugged. "It's not like I'm required to use a longsword. What, are you interested in this one?"
With a grin, he flipped [Yamato] around in his hands, showing it off to Irene.
Back then, he envied Surtr's Laevatain.
But now that his own blade was being admired, he had to admit—
It felt pretty damn good.
If Irene really liked it, Steven figured he could make a basic bamboo-light sword for her. But if she wanted a proper katana, she'd have to forge it herself.
Besides, someone used to rapiers probably wouldn't be able to adapt to a batto-jutsu sword anyway.
"Now's not the time for this."
Irene shook her head, brushing aside her curiosity about Steven's weapon.
She knew the blade wasn't ordinary, but in the end, Steven himself was the real monster here.
Even if he were empty-handed, he could've just tossed pebbles like throwing knives and gotten the same result.
She wasn't about to fool herself into thinking she could ever match that.
More importantly, she needed to warn the Inquisition.
"The unnatural gathering of Seaborn here means the Church of the Deep is plotting something. I have to report this immediately."
Irene's expression was serious. The abnormal movements of these sea creatures, combined with Church of the Deep activity, could only mean trouble.
"Then let's go."
Steven waved his hand nonchalantly.
"You guys were looking for me anyway, right? I'll just tag along."
After all, his whole reason for teleporting to Irene was to negotiate with the Inquisition.
Irene took a look around—the entire abandoned village had become a hellscape of Seaborn corpses.
That cultist she had been tracking? Gone.
If Steven hadn't shown up, she probably would've been taken away by that guy.
Now?
Either he was already dead…
Or after seeing Steven's "meat grinder" combat style, he noped the hell out of there.
Honestly, if she had been in his shoes, she wouldn't have stayed a second longer either.
"What?"
Steven glanced at his mini-map.
All the red dots—representing Seaborn—had retreated into the ocean.
If even he couldn't track down a specific target in that mess, then this little bird definitely couldn't.
"You still looking for someone?"
Irene hesitated for a moment before voicing her concern.
"I ended up in this trap while tracking an Church of the Deep member. But since we never confirmed their fate, doesn't exposing your strength put you at risk?"
If that cultist survived, they'd probably report Steven's existence.
And if the Church of the Deep targeted him…
Irene was genuinely worried about what might come next.
"Pfft—oh, so that's what you're worried about?"
Steven paused, then burst into a grin.
This girl was worried about him?
Him?
Reaching out, he patted the little bird's head, a chuckle in his voice.
"Relax, relax. If that guy dares to come after me, I'll actually be grateful."
He wasn't even joking.
The more monsters showed up, the more WAP he could farm.
If they could set up a monster respawn tower for him, even better.
His grind tower idea might actually come true.
"Well… if you say so."
Irene decided to let it go.
"Let's head back. The Inquisition is waiting for me."
She adjusted her gear before tilting her head at Steven.
"By the way, how did you find me so fast? Last I checked, you were still in Ursus."
For instance, how did he manage to appear in front of her like he had teleported?
No matter how she thought about it, it just didn't seem logically possible.
Was he even real?
Or was he just a figment of her imagination?
The timing was so perfect that she couldn't help but wonder—
Did he just want to play the hero in front of her?
"Sigh, this kind of thing? Simple."
Steven stroked his chin as he supported the still-weakened Irene, guiding her toward the outskirts of the abandoned village.
"You must've been thinking about me so much that your longing disturbed the magnetic field, and—boom!—some mysterious force teleported me right to your side. Makes perfect sense, right?"
"...That's a terrible excuse."
Irene shot him an unimpressed glare.
Even a child wouldn't buy that explanation.
"Tsk, fine."
Steven sighed dramatically.
"If you must know, I can use teleportation spells. Just think of it as one of my special Originium Arts."
Compared to the first explanation, this second one was actually much easier to believe.
Irene nodded slightly.
At least this one didn't sound completely ridiculous.
But as soon as she thought about it more, something else bothered her.
"Wait… are you treating me like a child?"
Her expression hardened, her hands on her hips as she puffed up her chest.
"I'll have you know, I'm an adult!"
Steven blinked, then grinned playfully.
"Oh, even better. A legal loli, huh? Lots of people are into that. Not that it has anything to do with me."
Irene froze for a second—
Then, her face twitched.
"…I get the feeling you just said something really inappropriate."
Realizing she wasn't going to win against this guy in an argument, she let out a small, defeated grumble.
Steven chuckled, clearly amused.
Compared to Talulah, this little tsundere bird was much more childish.
Both had their own charms.
"Ahem. Anyway, never mind that. How long are you planning to keep pretending? Show me your hand."
His teasing tone suddenly vanished, replaced by a serious expression as he extended his hand toward her.
Irene's gaze shifted away, avoiding his eyes.
"What pretending?"
Still, she obediently raised her left hand—the one holding the lantern—and waved it in front of him.
"See? Nothing wrong."
Her voice carried a forced confidence, but the slight hesitation gave her away.
Steven didn't respond.
Instead, he simply pointed at the other hand—the one she had been hiding behind her back.
"So there's nothing wrong, huh?"
Irene's shoulders stiffened.
In a quick motion, she flashed the hidden hand past him.
"Yeah, nothing's wrong!"
Her expression, however, had turned even more flustered.
Steven let out a low sigh, shaking his head.
"You know, someone once told me that the next time I saw her, she'd be a real Inquisitor."
He suddenly grabbed her wrist, pulling her hand toward him before removing her glove.
"Funny. I don't remember Inquisitors being the type to lie."
As soon as the glove came off, the truth was exposed—
A strange, fish-scale-like pattern had begun forming on her skin.
