Arknightcraft Modpack (Steve in Terra) (Minecraft x Arknight)

Chapter 32: Chapter 32: A Man's Competitive Spirit

In a certain sense, what the green-haired, cat-eared girl named Kal'tsit said was indeed factual.

Currently, Steven really couldn't be considered a human anymore. But compared to everyone else in this world, he was the most authentically "human" being.

That said, given Kal'tsit's cryptic demeanor, Steven wasn't going to trust her claim of omniscience just because of a vague statement. After all, her response could easily be categorized as a meaningless platitude.

"Perhaps" or "maybe not"—nearly every question in the world could be answered in such an ambiguous way.

So, Steven just smiled and posed another question to her:

"Then can you explain how I knew your real name, Ms. Kal'tsit?"

This time, he threw out a question tied to his Minecraft system, curious to hear her answer.

If she could somehow tell him that it was due to the item status display Mod revealing the title above her head, then Steven would willingly acknowledge her claim to omniscience.

If not? Then she was just someone with some capabilities but far from all-knowing.

"..."

"I don't know."

Kal'tsit's calm response was a textbook example of playing it safe. Her expression remained composed, devoid of any surprise at hearing her name.

Nor did she display the embarrassment or awkwardness one might expect after being caught out. It was as if someone else had claimed to be omniscient, not her.

"Heh, then next time, you should choose your words more carefully. You can mess up a meal, but you shouldn't mess up your statements. I almost thought you knew what I ate for breakfast."

Steven smirked. Clearly, she couldn't see through his golden finger.

"You had black bread—an Iberian village specialty—with more sawdust than wheat bran. And you're lucky. The villager who baked it used fresh sawdust, not bits from some sweat-soaked piece of furniture."

Kal'tsit casually finished his sentence, completely reversing the situation.

She had guessed correctly, down to details Steven didn't even know. Though honestly, the less said about it, the better.

This left Steven stunned.

Was this woman holding a grudge? Just because he stumped her once? Surely not... right?

"Alright, let's talk properly and get back on track."

After thinking it over, Steven decided that trying to one-up this cryptic woman was less productive than discussing the matter at hand. He could always spar verbally with her later; time wasn't an issue for him.

"Your suggestion is a good one. Compared to trivial inquiries, people should focus their brief lives on more meaningful pursuits."

Kal'tsit nodded in agreement, graciously extending her hand as if to invite Steven to speak first.

"I'll answer as best I can."

"Really? Then tell me, is that thing behind you—Mon3tr—up for sale? If not, where can I buy one?"

"..."

"No, and nowhere."

Great, Steven had scored another point.

Even Kal'tsit hadn't anticipated such a ridiculous question at such a serious moment.

Was this guy's competitiveness pathological?

Still, Steven didn't care. Feeling victorious, he asked the real critical question:

"What exactly are you here for, Ms. Kal'tsit? Are you planning to 'rescue' the Abyssal Hunter I have with me as well?"

Steven glanced at Gladiia, who now looked terrified at the thought of being taken away.

If she didn't want to go, then Steven would have no choice but to decline this Rhodes Island girl, even if it meant his plan to follow their organization and piggyback on their storyline would fall through.

After all, when it came to choosing between his adopted daughter and a group of strangers, wasn't the answer obvious?

"I'm here to locate the compatriots of one of my operators. However, based on her current state, I don't think she requires rescue so much as treatment."

Kal'tsit cast a glance at Gladiia, whose eyes held obvious fear.

What she saw before her was a far cry from the brave, decisive Abyssal Hunter she had expected. It was clear to Kal'tsit that this girl must have suffered some kind of devastating ordeal.

"Well, you can talk to her about it. I have no objections. If you can fix her, I'd even thank you."

Steven shrugged. If what Kal'tsit said was true, and this Rhodes Island organization could restore Gladiia's memory, then that would actually solve a big problem for him.

Sure, she might stop calling him "Dada" once her memory returned, but at least he wouldn't have to worry about her anymore.

That'd be a win-win.

But this was all contingent on Gladiia agreeing to trust the woman in front of her, something that seemed unlikely at the moment.

Thankfully, Kal'tsit seemed to recognize this herself. Only after obtaining consent from both Gladiia and Steven did she cautiously approach Gladiia.

"I don't know how much you can recall, but your teammates still need you. Whether it's Laurentina or Skadi, they're both waiting for you to return. Your subordinates need your care. Or are you going to run away from this responsibility?"

At the mention of those two names, a flicker of confusion appeared in Gladiia's eyes.

It seemed as though something deep within her consciousness was stirring, enough to override her fear of this stranger.

"Dada… I-I'd like to meet the two people she mentioned. Is that okay?"

Timidly tugging on Steven's sleeve, Gladiia looked up at him with a hopeful expression.

"Of course. Do what you want. I mean, I am your dad, right?"

Steven shrugged nonchalantly and agreed. As he'd said, he had no opinion on the matter.

"In that case, may I ask you a question now, sir?"

Having secured their consent, Kal'tsit turned her attention to Steven, her gaze filled with curiosity about this enigmatic young man.

"…Never loved, saving my mom, all bets off."

Seeing the puzzled expression on Kal'tsit's face after he uttered some random words, Steven felt like he had scored another point.

This time, he left her completely baffled.
