Chapter 43: Chapter 43: Do I Look Cool?

High above Iberia, aboard the Rhodes Island aircraft...

Outcast idly fiddled with a bullet on the table in front of her. Across from her lay a white-haired girl, breathing evenly in her sleep like a child.

As for Kal'tsit, ever since being retorted by Steven earlier, she hadn't spoken a word. She sat silently next to the pilot, gazing out at the sky as if lost in thought. Although this was her usual demeanor, Outcast couldn't shake the feeling that Kal'tsit seemed particularly irritable today.

The root cause of her irritation? The young man who appeared to be of Aegir descent had been in the aircraft's private compartment for nearly 20 minutes now. The girl who had come with him, also an Aegir, had fallen asleep waiting, but the guy still hadn't come out.

"Kal'tsit, you don't think he used this as an excuse to bail on us, do you?"

Outcast finally voiced her suspicion, putting away the bullet she'd been toying with and turning to her superior, also her friend.

"This craft is thousands of meters above ground. If he wanted to leave, he would have done so long before this," Kal'tsit replied coldly without turning her head.

Outcast detected a frostier tone than usual in her voice, confirming her suspicion: Steven had indeed gotten under Kal'tsit's skin.

Intriguing.

It wasn't often one got to see this self-proclaimed omniscient woman in such a state of vexation.

"Kal'tsit, I'm curious. Is that boy really that important to you?"

If Outcast didn't already know Kal'tsit had shown no signs of romantic interest in anyone over the years, she might have suspected that Steven was Kal'tsit's secret son or something. Outcast knew that, despite Kal'tsit's youthful appearance, she had already looked the same when Outcast was just a young girl herself.

So, while unlikely, it wasn't impossible.

"Put your meaningless speculations aside. The relationship between him and me is nothing of the sort. If you have spare energy, you should focus it on your work for Rhodes Island," Kal'tsit shot a cold glance at Outcast, dismissing her conjectures.

"Steven is not personally important to me, but he is crucial to Rhodes Island and possibly to this entire land," Kal'tsit explained after a moment of hesitation.

Her confidence in this assessment stemmed partly from intuition, but also from the weight of the message she had received from Saint Carmen of Iberia, urging her to ensure Steven's safety.

For someone who had lived through such a catastrophic event to hold him in such high regard, it was clear Steven was no ordinary individual.

"So, you're just going to let him push you around? With all due respect, that guy is actually pretty easy to get along with. Maybe if you changed your approach, you could ease the tension between you two," Outcast suggested earnestly, nodding her head.

Though she was used to Kal'tsit's cryptic communication, it was evident that Steven wasn't. A more straightforward approach might yield better results.

Kal'tsit shifted her gaze without directly responding.

Just as another heavy silence settled in the aircraft, the door to the private compartment finally creaked open.

The sound of heavy footsteps drew both Outcast and Kal'tsit's attention. When they looked up, however, they were met with an unexpected sight.

A massive figure clad entirely in purple, heavy metallic armor emerged from the compartment.

What was even more bizarre was the figure's headgear—not a menacing helmet to match the rest of the imposing suit, but a comically oversized pumpkin head.

The juxtaposition of the absurd pumpkin head with the otherwise intimidating armor created a jarring visual contrast.

"Sorry about the wait. Took me a while to decide what kind of helmet would look best," came Steven's voice from beneath the armor.

Outcast relaxed slightly, realizing it wasn't some Iberian heavy knight who'd sneaked aboard.

However, Steven's next words left both women stunned.

"So... do I look badass?"

"..."

"No," Outcast replied through gritted teeth, her face contorting into an expression she couldn't quite describe.

If she were a few decades younger, Steven's comment would have easily qualified as harassment. Now, she could only hope she had misinterpreted his words.

"No, no, that's not what I meant," Steven quickly clarified, removing the pumpkin head with a dramatic pop that sounded like a beer bottle being uncapped. Holding the headgear in one hand, he added, "I mean, do I give off a strong vibe like this?"

Since he now had the Equivalent Exchange mod, he couldn't justify running around without armor any longer. Coupled with his prior encounters with Kal'tsit and Carmen, he had decided it was time to don something that would conceal his presence.

The Netherite Armour Set became his top choice, though he had been hesitant about leaving his handsome face exposed. Concerned that enemies might retreat upon merely seeing his good looks, Steven ultimately opted for a headpiece that covered his entire face.

"Nope, you just look... goofy," came a blunt response from an unexpected source—the cat-eared girl who rarely uttered short sentences.

Kal'tsit? Succinct? Was the sun rising in the west today?
