Chapter 17: Chapter 17: The Enigmatic Doctor
After both sides made a few revisions to the cooperation terms, and included Amiya's proposed clause of "sincerity for sincerity," the agreement was finally signed without a hitch.
Before leaving, Wei Yenwu even took the initiative to shake Jay's hand.
Once Rhodes Island's party had exited the building, Ch'en immediately turned to Wei Yenwu with a flustered expression.
"Chief Wei! Why did you suddenly agree to cooperate with this mysterious infected organization?!"
"Heh…"
Wei Yenwu returned to his seat, lit his long-stemmed pipe, took a puff, then pointed at the two gifts Jay had presented. His tone turned serene.
"Because that doctor showed me Rhodes Island's strength."
"Showed… Rhodes Island's… strength!?"
Ch'en looked baffled, her gaze drifting to the bikini and water gun sitting on the table.
That wasn't strength. That was just his bizarre taste!
"Ch'en, that swimsuit is a limited edition by Chanel. Incredibly valuable. But the swimsuit isn't the point. What truly caught my attention… was that."
Wei Yenwu's gaze turned serious as he looked at the massive water gun Jay had brought out.
"This… this water gun? What's so special about it?"
To Ch'en, it looked like nothing more than a slightly oversized toy gun. Stuff like this was a dime a dozen at beachside shops and pool stands. There didn't seem to be anything extraordinary about it.
"Ch'en, I taught you a lesson once. Never let surface appearances cloud your judgment."
Wei Yenwu smiled and picked up the water gun with one hand, inspecting it from top to bottom. A sense of admiration flickered in his eyes.
"I've seen all kinds of weapons over the years. As expected, this one hides a deeper secret…"
"Chief Wei… this water gun…"
Ch'en's curiosity was piqued by the way he spoke about it.
"Try it for yourself."
He handed the weapon over.
Heavy.
The moment Ch'en held it, she realized it was far heavier than any toy water gun she had ever handled.
"Point it at that wall over there and fire. Don't worry, that wall's not load-bearing. Besides, Wenyue's been pestering me to knock it down for renovations anyway."
"Understood, sir."
The structure of the gun was roughly similar to a standard large water blaster. Ch'en flicked off the safety, hoisted the gun, aimed at the wall, and slowly pulled the trigger.
Bzzzzzzzzzzzz…
The gun emitted a strange humming noise before releasing a high-pressure stream of liquid with terrifying force.
BOOM!
A deafening impact shook the room.
The previously smooth wall now had a massive crater gouged into it. The blast radius and power were comparable to a small bomb.
The floor and wall were now covered in a viscous slime. If this had hit an enemy, the sticky residue would have also restricted their movements.
"What the hell?! This is supposed to be a water gun?!"
Ch'en involuntarily cursed in Lungmen dialect, stunned by the sheer destructive power of the weapon. She had never seen a "gun" shaped like a toy deliver that kind of punch.
"Now do you understand why I chose to cooperate with Rhodes Island?"
Wei Yenwu leaned back in his seat, crossing one leg over the other, his expression full of smug satisfaction.
"Through those two 'gifts,' the Doctor showed us that Rhodes Island isn't just financially strong, but also technologically advanced. And the fact that he handed over such a high-grade weapon even before we confirmed our alliance… that shows how unfathomable he truly is. An ally like this is worth Lungmen's trust."
"I see…"
At last, Ch'en began to understand Wei Yenwu's reasoning.
"But we still can't fully trust them before they prove themselves. Just having strength isn't enough—we need to see if they're willing to use it. Otherwise, we may get stabbed in the back."
Wei Yenwu's smile slowly faded, his tone turning cold.
"If they dare try anything underhanded… Ch'en, you know what to do."
"Understood, Chief Wei!"
Meanwhile, Amiya, Kal'tsit, and Jay were descending in the elevator.
Ever since they left Wei Yenwu's office, Kal'tsit had been shooting Jay strange glances.
Even though the agreement had been signed, the mood inside the elevator felt oddly tense.
"Um… it's great that the negotiations succeeded, right? Shouldn't we be celebrating, Doctor? Kal'tsit?" Amiya nervously tried to break the silence.
"Kal'tsit, you've been staring at me. Don't tell me… you've fallen for my rugged good looks and can't look away?"
Jay raised an eyebrow, feigning surprise as he spoke.
"Ah! Wait, don't tell me you're about to confess to me? C'mon, Amiya's right here!"
"Stop dodging the topic… Doctor!"
Kal'tsit finally snapped.
"According to our intel, Ch'en is Wei Yenwu's adoptive daughter. Yet you had the nerve to give her a bikini, right in front of her father, in the middle of negotiations! Do you have any idea what you've done?!"
"Hmm? Are you just jealous because I gave another girl a gift?"
"Me? Jealous over that?! Don't be ridiculous!"
Kal'tsit's frustration made her stomp her feet in the elevator.
"I'm just worried your poorly timed gift would ruin the entire negotiation!"
"Kal'tsit, don't worry. I didn't forget you."
Seeing that Kal'tsit still hadn't let it go, Jay decided to pull out the other bikini he had received from the system a matching set to the one he gave Ch'en and handed it to her.
The system had mentioned that wearing it while using the water gun increased damage by 25%. But Jay figured he'd rather skip the stat boost than wear women's clothing…
"Since you're so concerned, I'll give you one too."
"What?! This is…!"
Kal'tsit stared at the bikini in disbelief. It was the exact same style as the one Ch'en received.
"I gave it to Ch'en for diplomacy. Don't overthink it."
"Wha! Do you think you can pacify me with a swimsuit?! I'm only upset because your behavior nearly jeopardized the mission!"
Kal'tsit turned around and clutched the swimsuit tightly.
"Fine. The agreement's signed. I'll pretend none of that happened. But keep your guard up Wei Yenwu is a cunning man. We need to be prepared."
Kal'tsit's mood actually seemed to improve. Doctor Jay really was something else.
Amiya, sensing Kal'tsit's emotional shift through her empathic abilities, felt a new wave of admiration toward Jay.
Jay, meanwhile, looked at Kal'tsit's back and smirked inwardly.
What a pushover.
