Chapter 29: Chapter 29: It’s Not Me Who’s Wrong, It’s the World
Jay was soon brought to Kelsey's office by Amiya.
"Kelsey, did you miss me again?"
Before Kelsey could even speak, Jay waved proudly with a grin and said, "I've just recruited an excellent sniper for Rhodes Island, someone who can effortlessly handle Ursus Royal Guard gear! You called me in just to praise me, didn't you?"
"You! Stop pretending to be clueless in front of me! You know exactly why I"
Seeing Jay's smug expression, Kelsey was practically fuming, but before she could scold him, the phone on her desk rang.
With a sigh of frustration, she tapped the speaker button.
From the other end came Ch'en's stern voice.
"Kelsey, is that you? Your Rhodes Island Doctor not only stole my police vehicle but also abducted a critical target. What exactly are you people doing? Does Rhodes Island not want to cooperate with Lungmen anymore? Tell that Doctor to apologize immediately!"
"You heard that, Doctor," Kelsey said, staring directly at Jay.
Jay scratched his head just as the system's voice echoed in his mind.
System Prompt: Please choose one of the following options:
[Rational Option]: Sincerely admit your mistake and seek understanding. Reward: +10 Rationality.
[Chaotic Option]: Loudly proclaim, "It's not me who's wrong, it's the world!" Refuse to apologize and twist the blame. Reward: +10 Agility, +10 Endurance.
Note: Both options lead to similar outcomes.
If the result is the same, why bother playing nice?
Jay picked up the phone and spoke in a heavy, earnest tone.
"About my decision to take Misha during the mission… I have something I'd like to say first."
"Huh? So you realize your mistake now?"
Hearing his seemingly sincere tone, Ch'en was taken aback. Could it be the Doctor finally returned to sanity?
Even Kelsey's eyes widened in cautious surprise.
But Jay's voice suddenly shifted, now filled with self-righteous conviction.
"It's not me who's wrong. It's the world!"
"What are you talking about?!"
Ch'en roared through the receiver.
"What does your mess have to do with the world?!"
Kelsey groaned while Amiya smiled awkwardly from the side.
"The world? Doctor, do you mean… the Oripathy epidemic?" Ch'en asked, her voice suddenly hesitant.
Time to turn the tables.
Jay adjusted his tone and continued.
"Exactly! I did nothing wrong! First of all, your Lungmen authorities didn't fully disclose Misha's situation to us. That's a breach of the so-called 'sincere cooperation' between Lungmen and Rhodes Island, meaning you were in the wrong first!"
"More importantly, you knew Misha had acute Oripathy and still tried to detain her. Rhodes Island has the most secure treatment methods, and I acted based on the noble principle of saving lives! Ch'en, imagine if one day you collapsed from Oripathy and no one was willing to save you."
"…"
A long silence followed.
Jay had said that deliberately. He knew Ch'en herself was infected. And it worked.
After a pause, Ch'en's voice returned.
"How's Misha now?"
"I just checked. When we first brought her back, it was critical, but she's stable now after treatment."
"Good…"
A long sigh came from the other end.
"I have more urgent matters to handle. Let's set this aside for now. But you must not let Misha fall into Reunion's hands."
"Of course. Understood."
As the call ended, Jay turned to Kelsey with a grin.
"Handled it beautifully."
"Doctor… I give up on you."
Kelsey crossed her arms with a sigh, but since Ch'en had let it go, she didn't press further.
"Dr. Kelsey, I believe the Doctor did the right thing," Amiya said, fists clenched and eyes shining.
"We saved Misha's life. I'm truly grateful the Doctor made that choice."
Kelsey glanced at her, exasperated.
"Amiya, don't you start picking up his bad habits too."
"Big sis…"
Outside the medical ward's glass window, Skullshatterer stood silently, watching the unconscious Misha.
Thanks to Ifrit and Warfarin's emergency treatment, Misha's condition had stabilized. Though she wore an oxygen mask and couldn't speak, she smiled and waved at her younger brother from the bed.
"She's safe now," came Kelsey's voice behind him.
"Yeah… thank you, Dr. Kelsey…"
"No need to thank me. If you must thank someone, thank the Doctor," she said, glancing at Jay beside her.
"He was the one who risked Lungmen's wrath to bring Misha safely to Rhodes Island."
"Really… it was you… Thank you."
Skullshatterer bowed deeply to Jay.
After a conversation, he finally learned that Misha never held anything important enough for Reunion to fight over. The truth was clear.
Talulah had lied to them. She'd used them as disposable pawns.
"We trusted Talulah… and she deceived us…"
Skullshatterer trembled with rage.
Talulah had always claimed Rhodes Island was a corrupt, heartless group, and that only Reunion could offer infected people a future. But the truth was the opposite.
Rhodes Island had saved his sister.
"I won't take this help for granted. I want to do something to repay Rhodes Island."
"You want to repay us? That's easy," Jay said with a smile, pulling out the repaired Ursus gear and lifting a pair of black tactical tights.
"Then please, put these on."
